When it comes to beats, IMO, ARR songs have more
sophisticated beats that IR songs.
ARR likes a to improvise a lot on rhythm aspect, while
IR more on the melody.

Is dappangkuthu, themaangu, etc. also considered as beats. If that's so, ARR cannot beat IR in this aspect!

* villakku vaipom vilakku vaipom (athma)
* Asaya kathula toodu vitu (johny)
* patukuyilu manasukkula (talapathy)
* Attama Sadhirattama (C. prabakaran,
before that interlude with the wild flute
ARR is no where)
And many more ...

Songs by IR with Beats:
"Aasai athigam vachchu manasa adakki" - Marupadiyum
"Nila adhu vanaththu mele" - Nayagan
Almost all of ARR's songs have beats in the sense that his songs are westernized and thus ought to have beats(I assume that it is drum beats)

IMO
IR does not concentrate on beats. He concentrates on melody and harmony.
ARR concentrated more on beats and rhythm bcos he is extremely weak in melody. Whenever I listen to his slow songs they all sound the same - listless melody. ARR's rhythms make them catchy on the first hearing itself but I soon grow tired of it.
IR may not to technical wizardry (as ARR supposedly does) but his some of his rhythms are haunting :
Aasaya Kaathule vittu - Johnny
Kaatukuyilu manasukkulle - Thalapadhi
Jinjinaakkadi - Vanna vanna pookkal
Pani Vizhum Malarvanam - Ninaivellam nithya
Meham Kottatum - Enakkul Oruvan (The concluding drum solo is electrifying !)
IR uses rhythm section only as an accomponiment. - must be related to his penchant for classical music - both carnatic and western.

I assume that the usage of percussion instruments in the rhythm for any song is what is referred to as BEATS!!
True that IR has less pronounced beats while ARR cannot afford to. His beats are confined to four or five types. He is just recycling them. The tail piece beat of 'mukkaabalaa' and beginning beat of 'romeo aattam pOttaal' are same. The interludes of 'gOpaalaa gOpaalaa' and 'maanaa madhurai' (dappaanguththu) are same. The beginning beats of 'maanUththu mandhaiyilE' and 'kuLichchaa kuththaalam' are same.......
But though IR's beats are subtle, they are much more complicated. He rarely uses one single percussion instrument for his beats. In 'ponvaanam pannIr thUvuthu innEram' he uses both Tabla and Mirudhangam together. In 'andhi mazhai' he uses drums and mirudhangam. In 'poonkadhavE' he uses drums, congo drum and mirudhangam. 'enna saththam' has drums and symbals used to a significant extent.
As I alreay mentioned in another thread, the beat of 'ooradangum saamaththilE' from pudhup pattip ponnuththaayi is deadly. You have listen to it to beleive it. 'thOLmElE' from poomaNi also has a very complicated beat.
Analysis of IR's beats is a never ending topic.
BTW, ARR also used drums and mirudhangam in 'mettup pOdu' but the drum beat was so pronounced that the mirudhangam was overshadowed. Forget the picturisation, where KB showed tabla being played whenever the mirudhangam sound was heard.

Just curious:
MSV has used ONLY (the hawaiian !!) base guitar
(jinGu jikKu jinGu jikKu) as the base for beat in
the whole song in "Varavu ettanA selavau paththanA"
from bamA vijayam - NO percussion instruments such as
tabla, drums, bangos are used.
Have IR/ARR done/tried something similar ???

Aravind:
There is one interlude music in kalluri salai (kadhal desam) song. This piece comes right after the lyrics(?) 'naandhan computer, needhan en kadhal software'. This piece of music is quite catchy. I wonder this has been copied/repeated
elsewhere.

ARR just recycles beats of groups like Ace of Base,Dr.Alban & of course the reggae beat as in "chinna chinna asai" and "Mustafa".He has the computer to look for beats but IR comes out great stuff like "Maasi Maasam"(DharmaDurai),"Malaikoyil vasalil"(Veera),"PaniVeezhumIravu"(Mouna Ragam),the list is endless.
But you got to accept that ARR successfully synchronises western and classical instruments as in "Vaanil Yeni Pottu"(Puthiya Mannargal)& "MaanaMadurai"(Minsaara Kanavu). But IR has also done it way before ARR as in "Andhi Mazhai"(RajaParvai) where I think he has used the drum and mridhangam simultaneously.Any more additions to this list?

'thIrththak karaiyinilE' from 'va.ni.sivappu' did not have any instrumental music apart from the mild guitar - another gem by MSV & SPB.
There is a song in the movie paattup paadavaa. The herione sings a solo as she jogs throughout the song. I cannot recollect the lyrics clearly. Raja had used only the keyboard for the entire song. Even the beats were from the keyboard.
'paruvamE' from 'nenchaththaik kiLLaathE' has only the jogging sound as beats.
'vandhaaL vandhaaL raajakumaari' from 'o.U.o.raa. kumaari' does not have any beats at all. A drum sounds occasionally but that does not contribute as a beat. Was it a Cello which was used in the background of the song?
BTW, can we include 'mahaa gaNapathi' from sindhu bharavi which had no percussion instrument?

what about 'arubum ???" from the film
nambirajanin chandraleka. IR used percussinve beats only for a breif period in the end of second interlude, otherwise song does not have any percussinve beat at all.

The song in Pattu paadava is "poongatrile padhai thorum poothoovuthu .." - excellent song.

songs like

are simple and excellent.

makkaLe,
intha topic, yArOda adi sirappAnadhu yenRu Arambiththu, yengEyop pOy vitadhu.
I think, MSV gave best congo and bango-s in TFM. Next to MSV is anAmika (thanks
kALidhAsA). Even IR comes only next.
Coming back to adiyillAdha pattu, that always give be maraNa adi is
yennuLLE yennuLLE from vaLLi. It looks like IR decided that this
song should be one of career bests (I always found the phrase
"one of the best" to be an oxymoron) and hence should have
good percussion and melody. Fortunately for us, he separates the two
and gives percussion first. Once the guitar starts
and wooosh goes the
mridhangam. During the interludes the keyboard and
violin (key board again?)
give excellent jugal bandhi-s (are these patti manRams of music?).
During the vocals, keyboard and flute do the sandai and in the
end we get knocked out. Strange!!!

Don't compare IR with ARR,why because both were legends and creators of Music during their respective periods.During 80's to till 95 IR ruled the industry. He commanded the entire industry.U can only a few films where IR has done badly in a span of 600+ movies.Same is applicable with AR.Still my view AR has to take some years from now in order to be compared with IR
