  Koilpura - a late 70's flop film had one of the best Carnatic music works of Illayaraaja with hitherto not widely used raagas like Gowlai, Rasikapriya, Rasikaranjini.
  Yezhumalaiyaan mahimai , Mogamul - 90's films also have some good classical songs

  Unnal Mudiyum Thambi - (Nee Onru Thaana, Maanida Sevai) - Both songs not in the movie, only featured in the sound track

  I am not sure about Nee Onru Thaana but Maanida Sevai features in the film (Kamal sings it on the stage much to the annoyance of his dad played by Gemini Ganesan).

  Nee Ondru Thaan is one of the best songs in the film IMO; the tune is great and so is the mridangam usage. I didn't care much for Maanidha Sevai though.
  
  Though Koyil Puraa had only 3 songs, so I'm told, I'm sure the album will stand testimony to IR's Karnatic prowess. I havent heard 'Sangeethame', the song in Rasikapriya, but I loved to bits the other two songs.
  
  I feel that MSV had given at least two super hits in Mridanga Chakravarthy. I've only heard the songs 'Naadha Mayamaana Iraivaa Iraivaa' and 'Ithu Ketkathivittaatha Gaanam' (in raagam Mohanam).
  
  The film Oru Odai Nadhiyagiraathu also had excellent carnatic material.

  Gangasi karai mannanadi, and the second part of pazhamudhir cholai are quite classical. And Kanna varuvaayaa and Sanga thamizh kaviye from Manadhil Urudhi vendum.
