I was talking to an American who is doing his PhD in Jazz...He was talking abt a Hollywood MD Corigliano who scored for an oscar winning film "Red violin".He said the MD's Greatest strength was to use silence at appropriate times...has IR/MSV?ARR used this effectively...It would be nice if we could list down such situations.

I have noticed silence in between songs in IR's music like the one is "enna saththam intha nEram"...But could u mention which song ARR has used?

What Ram refers to would be most suitable to analyse for BGMs I think.Like specific instances in movies that depicted the mood of the situation very aptly through silence.
Maybe I'm wrong!

Isaipriyan,
I agree with you. Silence in songs is not so important, it is just a break and it is not very important. What is more important is how the MD keeps his mouth shut in the BGM. Some MDs just don't know how to do that.
I am no ARR basher, but I really hated him in "Kannathil Muthamittal". He just couldn't keep his hands of his keyboards. Oh! those horrible chorus lines just f*&$$# up whole scenes in that movie. He has to learn a lot. He is still immature in BGM - I think.

As far as songs are concerned, let me list a couple.
Muthu mani maalai (chinna koundar) - listen to the pallavi receited the first time. the gap after "Muthu mani maalai"..... and then comes "enna thottu thottu thaalatta"... then another gap... then the tabla just starts again and there goes another melodious piece.
Unnai kanda pinbudhaan (sigaram) - the end of the 2nd charanam... it comes something like .. mounamaagiren.. a very good one.

one instance I remember. In the film piLLai nila(I think,--its a mohan-Radhika-Nalini movie)Mohan will come closer to a car standing near a graveyard. there was some bgm till that point, but suddenly all music stops and a sudden silence begins to follow.after a few seconds when mohan is about to look in to the car a cock flies out of it.Everybody in the theater would have had there heart in their mouth.Brilliant work by IR.

This art of silence is beautifully used in the movie 'Puthumai Penn'. During a marriage scene Pandiyan gets a shocking news from Rajasekhar and immeditaely the BGM goes silent. The visuals show the kalyana kalebam when pandiyan walks thro the situation shellschocked but no BGM. Only when Revathi shakes he comes to senses and that second the sound and BGM all come back to life. Very imaginative work.

Normally in a suspense/thriller movie BGM is the main part - always catchy and well noticed. The BGM in 'Sigappu Rojakkal' is a real treat. There are many 'silent' scenes in it. I remember the kitchen scene when Sridevi is cooking - the appallam poriyal sound comes sudden.

Moondram pirai climax scene... a normal MD would hv trained his violins and trumpets and all other instruments for the scene but not IR. and thats the beauty.
