Why dialect in Madras is called 'Madras bAshai' instead of 'Madras Tamil'
:-)
As Kee Rajanarayanan mentioned in the preface of 'kOballapurathu Makkal'
writing short stories and novels in 'paechu valakku' has become a new
'mosthar' (fashion). But they get carried away and write narrators
statemetns also in 'paechuvalakku'!
I like the Pondicheri Tamil which has many 'Tamilified' french words. Not
only T'veli and Thanjavur but Pondichery Tamil also well represented in
Tamil literature. Ashogamithran, Prabanjan… no need to mention Anantharangam
pillai's diary.
Tirunelveli Tamil -- uses old tamil words -- 'paiya pO'
Kongu Tamil - Mariyathai tamil - 'enungO'
Madurai Tamil - fast and musical
Trichy (angittu ingittu), Thanjai Tamil ( kammanAtti, emblathu ainthu') --more neutral
Madras bAsai -
This is the dialect of chengalpet and thiruvallur districts. The
origin of the people in this area is telugu tribes. No wonder they can't
pronounce our special 'zha'.

Since they cant pronounce 'Zha' properly is it called as 'Madras bashai' instead of Tamil.? :-)
If 'Pondi' is Tamlified french then Chennai could be 'Tamlified english?' :-)
Prabhanjan's 'Vanam Vasapadum' is pre independent historical story (It has to be discussed how Tamil is used in histroical stories/movies). It's acceptable that they could have spoken that kind of Tamil. In contemporary period I dont see any different 'Pondi' Tamil as such. Basically they R speaking 'Madras bashai' :-)

My recollection of Madurai Tamil is "avainga eppa vandhAinga?" Leoni is a great source for Maduraiisms while Po. Ma. Ra. is his Nellai counterpart (though not as famous).
paiya po is most definitely Nellaispeak.
mandaikkuthu (headache)
paidha (wheel)
thooramA pOreenga? (hello)
Perhaps this needs another thread.
