Lagaan is a must see, though it did not come from Chennai, it is a must see to understand so many things about what TFM and TFilms in general have missed out in catering to a global audience. An actor who gave us Appoorva Sahotharargal with Ilayaraja Hey Ram was a big mistake and lacking in thinktank. Kamalhasan depended on Hype for that abstract storyline to sell. Sirai Chaalai was too stuffed i believe with elements that it lacked proper perspective and its songs were just ordinary attempts. A period film should have the type of music ARR created for Lagaan. Amazing stuff! (IMHO, Lagaan has become my favorite film in all aspects (screenplay, acting, story, casting and the bgm and songs)while Apoorva Sahotharargal is my second favorite...) I am saying that IR should come out of his mould and look at a world audience in taking up assignments like period films and be open to suggestions/criticisms/information and keep eyes and ears to the ground. IMHO, directors prpoducers are shunning him because audience has changed but IR cares only for Mozart and Bach and not for contemporary ideas. Lagaan is a good lesson for how Marudanayagam's music should be composed. I know HCIRF cannot accept this, it will take time as it took me (SuperFanofIR) to learn.

Bharath,
all that i meant is that as of today good, useful music may not evoke the best of response and any music that evokes best response may not be good music. this again b'cos of change in peoples preference/taste for music about which a MD may have different opinion.

KS,
Do you mean to say Tamil music in 80s were both useful and also evoked the best response?

kiru,
I have listened to the pieces in rajaangam quite often and passed the link to quite a lot of people.:-)
If you happen to meet me you may even realize that I like IR more than you :-)
I actually tried wriing 2-3 lines on why I think IR fans are still IR fans and why ARR fans baptised to ARR. I found out i couldnt easily say why?
I think Manirathan was a major factor in my transition. Loss of IR-BR combo was another major factor. And then RV Udhaykumar movies which were doing good those days stopped coming out... and slowly i lost tuch with raja.
I somehow believe that MD's work best when they have really motivated people to do stuff with. I didnt think there were enugh people to motivate raaja like MR or BR or even some other directors. In my opinion his other great works after ARR came due to either his own motivation or Kamal- rajini movies (sometimes fazil movies)
ARR on the other hand after his initial new sound stuff began to "create expectations" with shankar MR movies and then here and there movies with aamir khan and KB also got me into a cycle of listening to him...
well thats as much as i can come up with my transition!... I dunno abt others...

i have my reasons why i have been a steadfast raja fan despite onslaught by ARR:
orchestration-i miss his style of grand orchestrations-esp for bgm's
I grew up with his magic-and I was very much there when the IR phenemenon was happening-I still remember, whenever I was passing a cassette recording shop a new IR record cover will be on display and a new song will be blaring-when I remember his unprecedented output, all the hype on ARR when he has done ?70 movies is laughable.
I still remember when I heard many of his classics for the first time-like rathiriyil poothirukkum-i heard this in oppanakkara street in coimbatore(Alas, those shops are now history)
kinnathil then vadithu in a teashop in rangeygowder street and so on.it is difficult to part with someone who has gone up in your eyes and the eyes of the world-esp when he is good.I am sure many of the ARR fans must see IR as he is now and wondering why on earth are we vociferously defending a 'has been'.beleive me-he may have had a fall in his commercial viability-his creativity remains viable
