I have this feeling that there was a marked change (drop ?) in Ilaiyaraja's music sometime in early 1987. And it has not attained that magic ever since. Comments ...

Kupps i agree with you.. other day i watched Jay Leno show.. here is what he has to say..
Jay Leno: A recent survey showed Van Damme is the
most popular actor in Afghanistan. Yea..
Now we know how backward afghanistanis
are...
It is true.. Sylvester Stallone is more popular even in remote villages... He has crossed several barriers all over the world.. But he won the worst actor of century..

In my opinion IR music has not degenrated. He has talents, skills and still knows what people like. No fool would deny that he is still one (among the few) of the most knowledgeable with respect to music in IFM.
What he has lost is the fire to innovate by himself (like he did 10-20 years before). He is bored with films and the repeated stories and situations.
The sucess in his career has given him confidence and a goal to seek out other things - like score symphony music or to start writting books and poems and photography. He still does the hard work (like he did before) but it is only that now it is not just in film music anymore. He is trying to establish himself as an artist than just a music director in TFM.
Coming to TFM, it is for the directors who work with him to extract the best out of this man. Instead most of the people who work with him now, are people who have grown listening to his music and hold him in awe and respect. They might not question his delivery. Infact, we quite often here 'Neenga enna pannureengalo athu thaan music' from these guys. Infact some do not even discuss the situations with him, they let him decide the situations. I am sure if there are still directors out there who know what they want and are able to squeeze the best of him, he would still be able to deliver what we are looking for and infact much better than before.

outsider,
So what you're getting at is Raja went from hero to zero, right?
I beg to differ. I honestly think you are kidding if you think there are no dull, lifeless lacklustre tunes of the late 70s and early 80s of IR. I could think up a few, e.g., 'Naanthaanda Ippo Devadas,' 'Naanthaan Toppu' (both from TR-1982), 'Azhaikkadalil' (Sattam En Kaiyil; I still wonder why this song was such a hit), 'Thinamum Kalyanam' (Magudi) etc. all overshadowed by the wonderful songs of that period, such as 'Puthamputhu Kaalai', 'Siru Ponnumani', 'Raathiriyil Poothirukkum', 'Aayiram Malargale Malarungal', 'Theeraatha Vilaiyaattu Pillai', 'Madai Thiranthu', 'Vaa Pon Mayile', etc. etc. etc.
If you say that all songs of the late 80s and early 90s are dull and lifeless, I also think you are kidding. Yes, there are a lot, but I also found several good ones.
Anyway, if you don't think they're any good, it's all your opinion, okay? As you can see, personal tastes vary greatly from one individual to another. ;-)
