Dakshinamoorthy bought pure music closer to the public through his songs. He introduced the ragamalika concept in songs, in Malayalam. `Swapnangal, swapnangale...` was a pioneer number. He has used a very difficult raga like Todi in yet another ragamalika- `Aalapanam` sung by KJJ and S.Janaki.
It is a pity that the music industry does not make use of the creative talents of such stalwarts while they are still active and competent.

Like KJY's singing, Dakshinamoorthy's compositions played a major role in making classical music popular among a generation of Keralites.
Ravindran is my favourite music director in Malayalam. However, in my list of all-time favourite Malayalam songs, there are more Dakshinamoorthy compositions than Ravindran's!

Yes, there are certain dakshinamurthy numbers which can be used as signposts for the Raagas used. To name a few, Hridayasarrassile in bhimplasi, `Innale Neeyoru` in Begada, Kaattile paazhmulam in kamboji, and `chandrikayilaliyunnu` in Mohanam, are excellent illustrations in this context.

I've heard Vani Jairam has sung a lot for him. Could someone give me a list?

you are wrong. Dakshinamoorthy has very scarcely used Vani Jayaram. His favourite was S.Janaki followed by P.Susheela. In the fag end of his career, he introduced a new female voice- Ambili.
It was Salil Chowdhary who introduced Vani in malayalam, and used her voice regularly. But it was for M.K.Arjunan that Vani sung most of her malayalam numbers.

Rajeev - no not quite - the site salilda.com shows only 10-12 songs sung by VJ for Salil Chaudhary. All in Mallu. He had preference for PS and SJ in the South

We will be honouring Dakshinamoorthy sir on the 16th November'03 at Chennai as part of our annual fuction in the memory of Palghat Mani Iyer.
would appreciate if his grandsons/fans could give more details of his early music career..
Have heard him sing on many occasions at Thiruvaiyaru at the Thyagaraja sannidhi(as part of the Sivarathri akanda gaanam) and needless to say have been totally stunned by his musical acumen!

Hi all,
I remember the wonderful TMS song from Athisaya Thirudan composed by S Dakshinamurthy. The song is Muruga endrathum urugatha manam mohana kunjari manavala, urugatha manam urugatha muruga'.

dakshina moorthy composed for the film "nalla thanka" in tamil way back in 40s or 50s. He and IR teamed up in 1996 to compose for a mallu film called Kaveri (starring mammootty and mohanlal along with the debutante actress Sitara) and tht film has a too good kuntalavaraali song.
It was tuned by dakshinamoorthy and prchestrated by IlaiyaRaja.
