get ready for another round, guys (timepass panna venaam:-))]. no IR or ARR bashing, please, muthallaye sollitten. let's just discuss how each of them has used various instruments. for instance, IR's use of acoustic guitar is unparalleled, while ARR rarely uses it. similarly, IR `pales' before ARR when it comes to electric guitar or keyboards (strictly IMHO, everyone's welcome to disagree). start shooting.

Eden, I am no expert in sound engineering. But the funny thing is even I am able to find holes in IR's sound engineering. That is my 'aadhangam'. You can see here even Subbu is not happy with the 'artificial drum' sound. This is because the drum is too much in the foreground. It needs a little bit of 'reverb' to have some 'space' around it. Another frustrating thing is that IR has expertise in his own home, Yuvan Shankar Raja, does a pretty good job in recording. Listen to PoovellAm kettuppAr. Very nice.
Re: tune of IR vs ARR. We should talk about this in a separate thread.

Kiru!
Drum sound: May be he wants to sound different from any generic pop album:-) It's not that he can't create such sounds, pls listen to either the second interlude or tail of the rAm rAm song in HR, where Raja plays briefly the kind of drum sound that you & subbu would love to hear...What to do, probably the master wants it that way...

eden : You are right. Hey Ram had a better / different treatment. IR should put in same effort for recording all the albums. More space is required between the various tracks.
Rhythm : In order to give a different pattern/sound for every song, I think all MD's end up giving us 'lifeless' artificial sounds. IMO, for some songs in the latest albums a simple tabla / orginal drumkit would have been better than the sequencer. Atleast they can spray the patterns from the original instruments over the monotonous sequencer beats. For example, in the 'alaipayuthae kanna...' song, imagine a subtle Mridangam 'chaapu & thoppi' sprinkled sparingly in a non-uniform fashion (with 1/2 idams) over the rhythm box ! Wow it would have given more life to this beauty of a tune.
Currently the trend in re-mixing old songs is to add a heavy bass & artificial rhythm. May be after 10 years when the songs from the latest albums are re-mixed original instruments will have to be used over the already spoilt rhythm patterns !
Surprise packs : One more thing I observe in ARR songs is the surprise packs / spurt of strange sounds he produces during the pre/interludes. Added with a perfect recording, these small little things make it interesting to listen to his songs. Though the 'content' of composition in IR's latest songs / interludes are more complicated and beautiful, they still miss this intriguing surprises - sometimes we are able to imagine how the next few 'bars' of a trumphet/clarinet pieces would sound. I mean the pattern is predictable. Also, when there is a repeat of a few bars the music sounds identical to the first piece. ARR tries to put in variations in these repeat pieces too. Everytime pallavi is sung we are able to sense a modulation / some space for the singer's freedom.

Actually, in rAm rAm the switch at the end is from the sequence/drum m/c to natural instruments. Similar to the way it is used in 'isayil thodanguthamma'. BTW, hey rAm is the only album in which IR has recorded percussion at a higher level than in his other albums. Actually, he could just use real instruments and do some 'processing' on them to make it sound good/novel.
Subbu, I am sure you know that IR is an overkill for just songs. He is/should be doing longer instrumental pieces. Not many people can create a theme and develop long compositions based on that without 'straying'. (eg. nAyagan - then pandi theme song is used in very many forms. BTW, this tune was copied by one of the second rung MDs in a new movie for the BGM). Dont you agree ?

Hi,
Last week I bought a casette (RAMIY) containing Kadalukku Mariy.., Kadavul & Raman Abdulla. In the song "kovilukkul..." (from "KADAVUL" sung by Chitra), do you know what is the instrument used in the first interlude. Is it Shehnai? Just wanted to know if I am right or wrong about the instrument. I think the same instrument is used in "SRIRANGA..." song from MAHANADHI movie in one of the interludes.
BTW, "Muthamizhe" (sung by SPB from RAMAN...) has a great begining (prelude).

Hello Keyboard players,
Can anyone suggest a good audio mixer? The purpose is to hook my keyboard to the computer with the
help of a mixer. I've been recording by hooking the keyboard directly to the 'line in' socket of the Computer's soundcard. I'm not sure whether this setup is correct or not..
Do we have to have some kind of impedence matcher inbetween these two devices. can we reduce the hiss by connecting a good audio mixer inbetween?

Noise is very high in computer sound cards. You may have to spend $500 or so for a good one. The best thing is to get one of those USB devices (eg. from Roland). This way the computer is involved only in the digital domain and so noise is avoided.

kiru,
Thanks for the info. I'll go for an USB device.
because of a thunderstorm, most of my audio devices were blown out :( I feel that this is the best time for me to change the entire setup!
thanx

You need a Monster Cable power surge suppressor/filter. It is really a worthwhile investment. you can get one for $125 (MSRP $200). Apart from protection this will reduce noise levels. I have this even for running my stereo system. Makes quite a difference. check out www.globalmart.com for this. Do you know that studios use DC supply to run their equipment ? AC power can be noisy or difficult to filtier. Or you should use balanced power conditioners (min $1000).
Send me an email if you want to.

Srikanth,
Thanks for introducing many audio related products. do you find difference in 16 bit recording & 24 bit recording? I'd like to record my compositions with high fidelity! I'll e-mail you & Kiru before I buy any audio related product.
I visited your mp3 page, and definitely the recording is good compared to many others recording.

NAVEEN.. You said you are using a delta1010 is it LT or the other 1U one?Which one is good LT or the other and why? Please do let me know
BTW my naveen and my friends,I wanna share my problem with you.If anyone has an idea plz help me.
I have roland XP80,XV5080,VM-1824 mixer-hdd recorder I connect my instruments in VM-1824 and take its one stereo out to USB Roland UA100.When I connect the cable to UA100 instead of a low mad noise(hisss sound) I can say everything is ok.BUT when I open my pc I face to face with some other sound problems...I hear lots more hiss sound...When I take line in cables out (I only use vstis in cubase for ex the grand)I dont hear any noises but when I re-connect linein my problem starts.I also tried to find if the problem is electricity magnetics but not...What do you think is it bcoz of my PC?or UA100 USB Audio Device? What can I try to solve it? Is buying a new soundcard a good idea? Bcoz when I record a soft arrangmenet to PC I sometime hear that noise sound more than my music.. :-((
I also have a P4 1.8 512RdRam but I cant work with atmosphere...It starts making noise sounds then gets slower and sometimes stops.Maybe all the answers are in my PC?
OK ok Please if any friend has an idea let me know...Takecare all...

TO ME THERE ARE 5 MD`S IN TFM(ALLTIME FAVORITE)
1.G.RAMANATHAN
2.K.V.MAHADEVAN
3.M.S.VISVANATHAN/T.K.RAMAMOORTHY
4.MAESTRO ILAIYARAAJA
5.A.R.RAHMAN.
I FIND THAT IR &KVM SHARE THE SAME STYLE OF MUSIC.WHEREAS MSV/TKR`S STLYE IS SHARED BY ARR(MINUS HIS EXTRAORDINARY SOUNDS)
TO MY SUPRISE NO ONE IS ABLE TO SHARE THE SAMESTYLE OF COMPOSITION BY GR.HIS STYLE REMAINS UNTOUCHED.
IN MY OPINION,IT IS NOT RIGHT TO SAY THAT IR`S MUSIC IS MONOTONOUS, ARR`S IS NOT!IT SOUNDS fake
TO ME AS HE(ARR) ADDS STUPID SOUND EFFECTS TO HIS MUSIC WHICH HE THINKS MAKES A DIFFERENCE FROM OTHER MDS, BUT THE FACT IS THAT IT SPOILS HIS GOOD TUNES/RHYTHMS.BUT IN CONTRAST IR IS NOT SUCH A PERSON,HE USES NATURAL SOUNDS TO ACQUIRE GOOD TUNES/RHYTHMS.THEREFORE,CAN YOU SEE THE CLEAR DIFFERENCE?
