  almost everyone forget the greatness of flute of illayaraja in Kavikuil - Chinna kannan Azhaikiran - Rithi gowle ragam - Sung by Dr.M.BalaMurali Krishna.. no one can forget it.

  Oru vaanavil poalae en vaazhvilae--the flute and guitar pretty much make out with each other in this song. An understated yet spectacular piece.
  
  Maamen machchaan hey needhaanoa--flute alone conveys a lover's longing in this forgotten gem.
  
  Muththumani maalai--the flute and violin interplay nearly outdoes the singers in this song.
  
  Sokkanukku vaaicha sundariyae--flute and mirudhangam round out and lend melody to the short spurts of the charanam lines.

  Another great interlude which I enjoyed recently is in the song 'Oh Oh Oh kaalai kuyilgale' from the film unnai vaazhthi paadugiren. listen to the second interlude. that's where raja always leaves his mark.. in the second interlude. The flute piece supported beautifully by percussion takes u to a different level. available in Rex's site - song no. 224.

  LISTEN to the song "Sollivedu Vellinilave" from the movie 'Amaithippadai'. It's a melodious song made by the touch of flute. The charanam and interludes proves this. Kindly listen the song first. If you are still not impressed, please reply.

  The great flute passages of IlayaRaaja ,which I can immediately recall are
  1. Senthaazhampoovil - film Mullum Malarum. Listen to the first interlude with flute pieces ,interspersed with chirps of birds and the 2nd or 3rd(I'm not sure) interlude in the same song, where the flute sounds a bit mysterious as if you were going into the deep woods
  2. Iru paravaigal from Niram maaratha pookal - the opening flute prelude in Mohanam sets the mood of the song in a picturesque sorrounding and during the interludes , the flute sounds as if 2 love birds are engaged in some lovely dialogue.
  3. Maalaiyil yaaro from Chatriyan - What can I say? The flute gives a sweet company to the lonely maiden.
  4. Nadhiyoram from Annai or aalayam- The flute flute goes on its own trip in the first interlude with violin and guitar joining it at some places. Yet the flute rules.
  5. Chinnan chiru vayadhil - Meendum kokila - A short and sweet flute piece takes over from veena/guitar in the first interlude and gives the handle to Charanam.Don't miss the mischievous flute in the 2nd interlude.
  I can go on and on about flute playing a very prominent role in song like 'Pon vaanam panneer thoovudhu inneram' . Let me stop here.
