Naaz's thread on 'what role listeners can play in establishing quality in TFM' set me thinking. The desperate (ok maybe I am being hyper) but the need of the hour is a TV channel that shadows the popularity of over-commercial and vulgar MTV India and Channel V yet it cool and hep in the right way to attract youngsters ! Ok here we go :
THE BRIEF :
-Come up with good Brand names that you think will be suitable for such a channel
- Names and ideas for programmes that can be featured in such a channel
- Ideas on how to market such a channel among our youth and general populace
TARGET AUDIENCE
- Indian Music lovers of all ages
I wanted to put down a full-scale marketing brief here....but time doesn't permit...so let's at least brainstorm.....as someone has said "If you can think of it or dream it, you can achieve it !
So people, start shooting your ideas here !!

OISG:
Though too much of raga-identification business can really kill the beauty of a light song, I feel talking about raagas in film music - especially for people like I am. I have no formal training but a lot of interest in classical (hindustani and carnatic). I have attended workshops for educated/careful music listeners who havent had formal training. For instance if you listen to "ennuil engo" and then to a classical recital in Raga Madhuvanti, you can quickly make out the similarity. (It helps, I think, though one mustnt overdo it.) And sometimes if u can identify a raaga correctly, you do feel good :)

correction - read the first sentence as
"I feel talking about raagas in film music - especially for people like I am, is extremely useful".

>>we need someone young to sell music. like anuradha sriram, shankar mahadevan..<<
That's right s0..but we also need IR to share his wealth of experience ! In one video of his interview which was shown in Kamaraj Auditorium when he received his "Maestro" title, he effortlessly demonstrated how folk is derived from classical !!! This is quality music education for our younger generation !!!

I think we should position our channel as a "renegade" channel with quality music and position it against MTV and Channel V kind of culture. It is like making films in a MR style without losing the "values" angle !
magix....
Web wouldn't be able to reach everybody yet...as of now TV has a greater reach...this is a brainstorming stage...so keep shooting and let's make our opinion known...
OISG...
It's all in the packaging....I kinda imagine a very creative, youthful style without the trappings of a MTV or Ch V....I got so sick of the MTV style of presentation and promos..I think it is about time we "geeks" and "nerds" and "humanists" (I am sure we have all been considered as one) kicked them back..
Any humorous ideas for TV promos that position our channel as "intelligent" compared to "moronic" MTV ?

The Channel( Radio /TV ) should have strict, laid down intrpretations for avoiding lewd and obnoxious lyrics.
I have learnt a thing from the "Youth shows".the Channels handpick the ones with near Zero intelligence but who crave to show their allround abilities(!) on screen.(Just watch SUNTV s Ilamai Pudhumai..a showcase of stupitdity.Watching them gives me a comfort of sorts... !)
The Channel should pick the real musically talented persons from the schools and colleges.Show the audience the intelligent face of the youth.
AVoid Countdowns - I have lost count of the countdown shows in the music channels. You get a bonus .. you dont need to pay stupid semi-clad nuni naaku Nafisas or loud-mouthed brat like chinnappa for compereing.
Translated lyrics programme - I am sure KD s "Naan pesa Ninaipathellam" should find admirers in the north. On the same line "Marne Wallah Koi Zindagi (Qurbani)" should interest the southern audience.Title can be "Tholaivil oru Thazhmbu" (Valee inspired this title..)
Thadangal!Suvadugal!- A programme on how the Sanga Kala Paadalgal inspired some TFM songs.(I have my doubts about the longevity of this programme !)

one small suggestion.. as they say maybe u should learn to crawl before u walk. how abt making a single programme for an already popular TV channel? if it becomes a success, ofcourse u can think about starting a new channel. coz running a new channel without any elements for commercial success is not an easy task.

Commercial success it something that has become a necessity (advertising revenue, particularly, will be essential to sustain such an effort.) The thing to guard against will be an "out-and-out" commercial venture. How about something like "Heard Voices, Unheard Melodies" (eg. established and respected singers presenting a programme of Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan and Pudhu Kavidhai based songs). Will that appeal to tamizh listeners?

the opposite is rigth now being used in the other channels.. so that might be a good idea..
I mean right now it's "unheard voices, heard melodies".. so Naaz, ur suggetion seems interesting!

Small twist to your phrase, magix: These days it is "unheard voices, unclear melodies (mostly)" :-)
