The Miss World 1996 show had music composed by Ilayaraja. Anyone aware of its availability on CD/cassette?

  That is a very good question, I have been asking for over a year. However, I was fortunate to have that event on video tape. IR's music is the score for the entire program. The audio is not very clear. However, I got it taped to really have this joint event of Amitabh's and IR's on record. I believe, according to Sathya that the CD is going to be market soon.

  Thanks Nitin: it's good to know the music might be available soon. Watching the video with its terrible audio wasn't fun. One also experiences outrage that IR's contribution was neither publicized nor acknowledged (except for a listing of his name with a couple of others at the fag end with the closing credits...)

  One more query: does anyone know about IR's "panchamukhi"concert performed during the 94-95 music season? It would be great to be able to hear a recording.

  Hope the CD of MISS world 96 is released soon.I recorded the audio track in cassette from TV when the program was live and i really enjoyed the music.The voilin piece in GOA related dance,song in malayam and song on krishna were very nice.

  I agree with Kumudham in one respect. IR should not have agreed to score music for this function.
  IR is also a good thinker, philosopher and a philanthropist. He is one among the very few in TN who can openly critisize the goings-on in various walks of life. He has always come down heavily on the existing political idealogy in TN, thanx to his songs, as he used them as his platform. A quick recollection of such songs?
  1. Chinna thambi from PoonchOlai
  2. Thalaivan oruththan varanum from kattapanchAyaththu. (He blasts off the then CM of TN for 'her' politics)The words he uses (mu mEtha)
  in the song is just apt and great. And Raaja goes ahead and sings the song and that carries a bigger punch.
  3. U M thambi songs nanjai undu, akkam pakkam (the credit should go to KB for that movie)
  
  His 'vetta veLiyil....' book too carries a lot of samooga seerthiruththa ennangaL. May be all this because he struggled in his teens to establish himself, and may be because he had his mentor pAvalar VaradharAjan in mind, always, who sang songs for political parties on stage and made a living, and who lost his life in penury, after being deserted by politicians.
  
  Now, coming to the topic, I support Kumudham in that IR, having said so many things either thro press, songs, books, etc., why should he accept an assignment that is directly related to belittling
  the quality and character of womenhood in India.
  I mean the pageantry!! Should he accept this assignment, at least at this juncture in his career?
  
  I dont find any hold in Kumudham's argument in that IR is a philosopher, and his assignments in the film industry are already in that direction, as one would accept the fact that our film industry is already conducting 'fashion shows' 'catwalks' 'parades' on the silver screen.
  So why pick IR in this case??
  
  Last but not the least, KUMUDHAM has no locus standi to question anyone in such subjects, as
  it is Kumudham that started the ugly 'pOttis' of 'find the owner of either the lips, or the hips and you get Rs 500 inAm'. Even today Kumudham's photos of female stars of South India are 'more revealing' than the photos that are meant to 'reveal more' in some magazines of the expected kind.

  I think this Kumudam and the criticism that Raja should not belittle womanhood in India has no basis. The pageantry was presenting as a backdrop to the event, the various cultures of India in the form of dance and music. That was perhaps the strongpoint of the event, when a lot of talented artistes could field their skills to a global audience.
  
  I understand the Raja did not give music to the pageantry events themselves, for instance the swimsuit contest. For those, some western dance music was played, quite appropriately.

  I find the arguments rather trifle - I mean why shouldn't IR score music for a Miss World paegent ? Afterall the entire show was live, reaching a massive global audience with International sponsorships, and an opportunity to show case the 'Indian' music...and what not.
  
  And BTW, the Miss World was much less 'belittling' the womanhood than some of the scores of IR picturised on Tamil screens !!!
