hi all, I am Anand from bangalore and a new visitor to the tfm page. I am a great fan of both ARR and IR. I browsed through all the earlier threads on ARR and IR. It seems to me that there are quite a few anti ARRs out here.
Let me tell you something about IRs music. IRs music became popular and sounded different because he tried to bring in a westernization of Carnatic ragas in his songs. Even a dappanguthu was in Lathaangi or sivaranjani. That actually made the difference. Otherwise he is no great MD. One might argue that such a westernization or incorporation of a carnatic raga in a dappanguthu or jazz is something that demands great applause. But IR doesn't deserve that because, if u say u are tuning a song in a particular raagam, you have to bring out the nuances, the laya and bhaava of the raagam in to the song. Just traversing the swaras in the raagam here and there does not mean that u have tuned a song in that raagam. Ilayaraaja has done just that, a mere traversal through the swaras. In many places, there were apaswaras also. ARR has tuned very few songs based on Carnatic ragas but they were classics. For example Mettu podu in Anjali is a beautiful song in Ananda Bhairavi. He has brought out every nuance of the raagam in that song. Minsaara Kanna in padaiyappa is an excellent piece in vasantha. En mel vizhunda mazhai tuliye is again a beautiful piece in kaapi. A real mix of the east and west. That is what u call fusion. Ilayaraaja boasts of having composed songs in rare raagas like chala nattai, kanakangi etc. For example pani vizhum malar vanam in chala nattai is again a pure note traversal. There was no attempt to bring out the nuances in the raaga. So IR knew how to make songs sound good but ARR gives a fine polish to each and every one of his songs. IR composed music for 700 odd films. Hey Ram is his 785th film. Considering 7 songs per movie, he has tuned almost 5500 songs. Huge number indeed but hardly 5% of those songs are listenable others are 100% pure junk. But 99.9% of ARRs songs are listenable and they are also good numbers. What do you say about this?
Regards,
Anand

My question to you this:
Your posting to Sabesan sounds as if this topic were titled "Is IR's character better than ARR"? I think you are getting into comparing personalities of MSV, IR and ARR and not their music. I also have a very good contacts in the TFM industry and do know all the stories of MSV, IR and ARR personal lives. Do you think it is decent enough to discuss those in this forum? What is your point in repeatedly saying that IR has an attitude. As someone started a thread here in this forum accusing about SVShekar's attitude in the US, why don't you start a thread in the "Forum Hub" so that we can discuss about personalities of all musicians in general there? Will that help?

MusicFan..
If you read the thread from first (today's edition), sabesan made a claim that msv's attitude was bad, i am replying to him ,thats all.
if you read it again I also stated arr is doing great music!..

Fan, Sabesan and Trend:
I am saying again. This thread will end up only in squabbles and character assasination. It is not right to say who is greater - MSV or IR, IR or ARR. The style/pattern/technology with which the musicians composed music has varied across years. After a decade or so, there will be another musician XYZ. Will you make a comparison as to if ARR is greater than XYZ or vice versa. Isn't it silly to do that? Why argue who is great? There is generation gap between grandfather and dad, dad and son in a family, how do you think this topic will hold water?

Musicfan: I see a nice change... Ok, you are right in a way,
ARR OR IR
Basically what I often argue here is, ARR is not a dumb musician as portrayed here.
He knows to create good music, that’s all. Like his predecessors he is good and he is on the top today. Millions enjoy his music today.
People are bound to compare him with his predecessors; this is just to check how good he is, not to degrade his predecessors, in this process some find that he supersedes his predecessors or some just don’t agree,
Both the group starts treating each musician in a very low sense, not worrying much about music. I think this has to stop, Music is very subjective, or it skews based on your personal opinion.
Finally, This is a never-ending story. Be prepared for next round of talks.

Like you said, Music is very subjective . Many people who wrote in this topic wrote about IR's attitude, but forgot to discuss his music. I do not want to comment about what you said about ARR's music because again music is subjective and there might be different opinions. You say that this has to stop but you have provided a lead for people to have a "second round of talks". May I know why ? :-)). Is there some kind of "United Nations" agreement to be signed by our people here?

Sriks, did i say MSV has a bad attitude???? nopes - i said "if u attribute IR's downfall to his attitude, then can i attibute MSV's downfall to his attitude"? i never meant MSV had a bad attitude, and in fact i don't think he had one.... its simply the people's taste that has changed and this has nothing to do with bad/good attitude... that was/is my point.... kindly excuse if i had meant wrongly....

Fan,
Following the thread, the pattern I find is people write something like telling about their favorite song of IR and also say something like such beautiful music from such a humble person who isn't interested in popularity etc etc....
I don't know why they mix both music and attitude together unnecessarily.
I sure won't be surprised to find one more comment like this soon.

I have been contributing here for 3+ years now, what ever good we discuss, finally, our road leads us to rome. Aka..ir/arr kudumipidi sandai :)
Anyway as sabesan puts dont take it personal, it is just a discussion, thanks everyone following this rule till now. I think we are much civilized than our MP's and MLA's back home.

Same here. I have been contributing to this forum for around 4 years now. I have been on a punai peyar to cover myself from being bashed :-)). Of course, there are lot of guys writing with punai peyar in this forum for the same reason and I need not be blamed for that. I admit that in the past there was more ARR bashing, but I can tell you for sure that the recent trend among the DFers is IR bashing which is proving that more youngsters are writing :-).
Anyway, this topic was started on January 2000 and has gone until October 2000. This should not be allowed to grow and has to go into the Archives. This topic is a waste of time and the only thing it did was it raked up a feud between people who have not met but bash each other in thin air for no good reason. So, this topic only created negative energy which is unhealthy :-(.
Thanks

Dear Anand,
Are you an LKG in music??
IR gives music, ARR gives sound. That too with the help of a good sound engineer.
Think that you are very weak in numbers. ARR gave a junk, dapanguthu in his first film roja( Rukumani, rukumani). What a terrible song!!!
You must be a strange person to call IRR songs as junk!
Here is a list of arr junk for you
chikubuku railu
petta rap
most of the kadhalan songs
all songs of e20u18
all songs of udhaya
all songs of ayutha ezhuthu
all songs of puthiya mannargal,
all songs of parasuram
all songs of new
since Arr has only composed a few films, this junk list is also few. waiting for more junk from the sound engineer!!
oh sorry ARr deserves only 305 for tunes and he rest of he enginerring goes to Mr sridhar whos is the main brain behind ARR.
But for Srdhar, ARR is another SA Raj Kumar.
Read it and shutup

Excerpt from 'THE HINDU' interview of MSV / GA:
Gangai Amaran: You have also composed music with Ilayaraaja for a few movies. I had the privilege of working alongside both of you for Mella thirandadhu kadhavu. How did you get to work together?
M.S.V: It is actually an interesting story. Ilayaraaja requested me to do the re-recording for Vidinja kalyanam. After the film was released, there was a report that MSV had become Ilayaraaja's assistant. It created a lot of furore. A fan of mine even attempted suicide. After that we decided to join hands for a movie.
Gangai Amaran: It was an unforgettable experience. I penned a few lyrics for Mella... All the songs came out well thanks to your combination. Then, after a long gap Ilayaraaja and you composed music for Senthamizh paatu and now for Vishwa Thulasi.
M.S.V: Though our combination worked quite well and spelt commercial success, I never looked at it from a business angle. Working with Ilayaraaja gave me immense happiness.

On a lighter vein Pseudo MSV worked with ARR on many numbers like Enna Vilai Azhgae, Roja Roja, Sunta Hai Mera Kudah etc. :)
