Though he has been around awhile giving occasional hits, after the tremendous hits from "Sooryavamsam", "Unnidaththil Ennaik Koduthaen", "Thullaatha Manamum Thullum" and the recent "Nee Varuvaai Ena", S.A.Rajkumar seems to have reached a favorable status in TFM. I would like to discuss his signature music.

Guys,
My opinion is that SAR has really good tunes and lacks in proper orchestration. For e.g, in "Irubathu Kodi Nillavugal". from Thullatha Mannamum lacks the proper orchestration. Also, the recording quality is not even close to IR or Deva leave alone ARR. But he is a good MD to watch for
in the future when he matures as a true musician.

"when he matures as a true musician. "
He's too old to mature as 'true' musician.

For SAR to be reckoned with memorable composers, he should shed the `take-a-good-song-and-change-a-few-notes' attitude! (One classic example is the `Sollamale' - this guy may go around telling that this and `Kannalane' are the same ragaa etc.... but the fact remains that it is heavily inspired.. otherwise how will you explain the other similarities -like the clap based rhythm, similar female chorus etc...)

Hi,
IMO he is the most over-hyped and over-rated MD in TFM . I would call him a poor man's Deva (of all people) . TFM at present is so "abnormal " to the extent that this guy is being given a seperate topic in newtfmpage ! To his credit , he makes life easier for TFM fans to identify the MD of a song , since all his songs sound the same , inspired from old IR and Hindi tunes . He does come up with one or two good tunes like Paarthu Paarthu in Nee Varuvai Ena . Another rotten thing about him is Background music for movies, which is sick to say the least . In all his films , one can hear a "twang" which resembles a guitar losing a string for the comedy scenes as in Unnidathil... , Malabar Police , Nee Varuvai Ena , etc . As far as his fascination for Sivaranjani goes , I would compare it to one interview in which Sirpi said he was inspired by Madhyamavathi ragam ,which was a disgrace to the ragam.
Bye

SAR has taken the cue from Hindi film Music directors. As e.Hari has rightly pointed out he stylizes like Nadeem Shravan (who though not bad, could never get over their Ashiqui tunes) and the rest of the pack (names mean nothing, as all lack any originality AM, JT , Annu and the rest). SAR realizes these HFM MDs give hits after hits (!!!! ofcourse of poor tastes) using similar tunes making changes here and there and modelled his music on those lines.
He was much better during 'Chinna Poove..', "manasukkkul Mattappu..' and 'Puthu Vasantham..' days when he atleast tried to do something different.
It is sad that good director like 'B.Vikraman' have to resort to this mediocre MD. SAR thrives thanks to SuperGood Films.
Alas when Deva is the numero uno in TFM, sure SAR and so too Sirpi will be around to give their mediorce cand recycled compositions.

.."It is sad that good director like 'B.Vikraman' have to resort to this mediocre MD"...
Balaji,
The present scenario is such that KB , Kamal etc. have resorted to Deva for their films(atleast once). So Vikraman resorting to SAR is'nt that bad;))

Hrishikesh,
Forgive my lack of wisdom. Maybe I should have started another thread about "IR"..."IR's building" oops, already taken, "IR the greatest lyric writter", "IR follower of Ramana Mahirishi" hmm someone beat me to those too, or maybe I should go the opposite way and start yet another thread about "ARR's shorter than IR", or "TAAL" "who's greater...", "Fattest singer in TFM", "pattaani sundal or mochchaikottai which is better?". Sorry, I've just abused the TFM landscape and haven't quite gotten the jist of relevancy in picking TFM topics.

balaji,
glad to find another soul on the same page. He has perfectly mastered the art of giving songs,
which stays on the chart. What he achieved was great, considering that even after great success with pudya vasandham and puriyatha pudir, he failed to establish himself. But after a gap of 3 or more years, from poove unnakaga, he made a successful comeback, and now his popularity is all time high. But I can concede that, when he started in late 80's with cinna poove meela pesu and manasugal mattaphu, he was a revelation.
I agree with udahya that innisai padi varum had a memorable sandham, which is a rariety these days.

Haiyyo, santha gnaabagam!:-)
As I said before, SAR handles melody well. At least one song from his movie has always been memorable. But his flaw is that he blatantly repeats his tunes. Consequently, most of his songs sound the same. BTW, the songs from 'Pooparikka Varikirom' don't have his touch. I got a sense of listening to the Beach Boys when I heard the songs. There is a HEAVY influence from some english album.
Apart from that, IMO, and only IMO, I think that he has no real identity. He is one among the many MD's who seem to have a common style of making music. There is really no individuality. His music does not stand out. One can't say that 'Hey, this is SAR's song'.

Aruvi:
I think "pooparikka varukirom" is by Vidyasagar and not SAR.
"O iravil kaatru vanthathu" from Puriyatha pudhir is a nice song.
I feel bad abt him whenever he copies. Earlier I had mentioned abt Megamai vanthu pogiren.
Another ex, Malligai poove malligai poove parthaya from Didi tera devar deewna.
Otherwise, I rate him 100 times better than Deva.
