Some good chorus songs? When a chorus is restricted only to humming it is fine. Beyond that
it is...

Some chorus songs by Ilayaraja are really superb. I can think of 3 great songs all of which became hits. Masaru ponne from Devar Magan, Poongatrile from Paatu Paadava and another song from Singara velan( I dont know the lyrics). A song in Maaya Bazaar where Raja uses the chorus team to provide the music for a song is amazing.

I think, BG humming adds more richness to the song. Sure, chorus too adds richness. Firstly, lets look into the songs with chorus/hum's
Chorus::
Kolakolaya........Palootti valartha kili
Naan naan paadanum.......Poonthalir
Aasaya Kathula.........Jhonny (whaw!!)
Muthu samba..........Annakili (Raaja seems to like chorus from word go!)
Sorgam Madhuviley........Sattam en Kayyil (thats a good one)
Chithira sevvanam........Kattrinile varum geetham
One among the best bg hums from RAja being
Ninaivo Oru Paravai.........Sigappu Rojakkal
In the late 80s, Raaja gave some excellent chorus songs. Adi Athadee from Kadalorakkavidhaihal being one among them. And there is Poomaalaye from Pagal Nilavu wherein Raja will sing in a low pitch by the side of the female vocal and vice versa. I would say that was quite different. And you have Raja, Rajathi Rajanindha Raja from Agni *.
Of late, his good chorus songs are Velli nilave from Nandhavana Theru and Thendral Vandhu from Avatharam that has humming chorus in it. My favorite one being April Mayile from Idhayam. Real upbeat one!!!
In general chorus/hum adds more vibrancy to the song. Any special hums, pls post!!

Add En Iniya Pon Nilave from Moodupani to this list. It has a great chorus interlude!!

Its only after Maestro's entry into TFM, I would
think that chorus was intelligently used in preludes and interludes;
Maestro's 500th film "Anjali" has chorus in all
songs. All are great numbers. Is there any other
film with all chorus songs..?

I Think Avatharam Had a Chrous song. Dont
know the lyrics. There have some excellent
chorus interludes in many of his songs.
Rajesh: The song from Singara Velan is
"Thoodhu Sollvadaradi adhi vanmath!"
It is one of the arresting songs of Raja.

I think 'Thum thana thum' from Pudhiya Varpugal
is one of Rajaa's all time hits. But I am not a fan
of multiple singers (with limited singing talents)
singing the lyrics. It all started in the mid 80's.
A few old songs sung by more than 2 singers;
'1000 karangal - Karnan (TMS,PBS, Seerkazhi),
Yerodum mannil - Palani (same trio). But group songs sung by Gangai Amaran, Suresh Peters
to name a few really affect the quality.

It is not true that IR is the one who popularised chorus songs. I remember few songs which were done so well by early MDs.
1. Thaeru Paarka Vanthirukkum Chittira Pennaye
2. Neenga Nalla irukkanum Naadu Munnaera
3. Ellorum Kondaduvom .. Allavin Peyarai solli
4. Indiya Naadu En Veedu, Indian Enbathu En paeru

Chandra,
Those are good chorus songs. But my point is,
IR has the dubious distinction of using singers
with limited singing talents in chorus songs like
college students group songs etc. In his songs each of these singers have a few lines for their
own unlike in a typical chorus songs where these secondary singers sing in onc voice.

IR's chorus songs have been very popular. The
song "velli nizhave.." from Nandhavana theeru" was a excellent piece. "April mayile" from Idhayam can also be added. Singing talents?? Do you meant to say IR? If it is so, I surely object it. IR has sung songs which are very tough to render.

Few more songs where the chorus ('kuzhuvinar' in Tamil Nadu radio and 'gOshti' in Ceylon Radio!!) has been employed wonderfully:
1) chinnap puRaa onRu - anbE sangIthaa
2) iLamai enum pUngkaatRu - pagalil oru iravu
3) thEvadhai iLam dhEvi - 1000 nilavE vaa
4) kELadi kaNmani - puthup puthu arththangkaL
5) veLLich chalangkaikaL - kaadhal Oviyam
6) naadham ezhundhathadi - gOpura vaasalilE
7) madai thiRandhu - nizhalgaL
8) idhazhil kadhai - unnaal mudiyum thambi
9) raakkammaa (tail piece) - thaLapathi
10) paarththa vizhi - guNaa (What a song!!!)
Again listing Raja's chorus masterpieces becomes a lifetime job. One unforgettable piece with respect to humming, which immediately comes into my mind, is 'vaanuyardha sOlaiyilE' from idhayakkOyil.
MSV has handled his chorus magnificiently in 'kaatRukkenna vEli' (avargaL). His humming effects in 'pavazhak kodiyilE' (paNam padaiththavan), 'kallellaam' (aalayamaNi) are great. Note that he had employed LR Easwari on both the occasions.
'indhiraiyO ivaL sundhariyO' from kaadhlan (Rehman), 'veNNilaa veNNilaa' from sundhara purushan (Sirpi), 'konjcha naaL poru thalaivaa' from 'aasai' (Deva?!!) had some good chorus effects.

2.Devathai poll oru penn ondru -- GOPURA VASALILEY
3.Ponnoiviam Kandenamma yengengum - KAZHUGU
4.Ae Rasathi Rosappu va va va -- EN UYIR THOZHAN (great one)
5.En kanmani un kadali -- Cittukkuruvi
6.Kamnaiye Kadal enbadhu -- 6 LIRINDHU 60 VARAI

Nice to revive a thread of everlasting theme. My contributions from A.R.R's music. A.R.R has given the maximum imp. to chorus and I'm just quoting a few.
To start with:
1. All songs from Thiruda Thiruda
any updatings
