A song is given to you. How do you choose which
raga to use?

Hi tom,
Your question looks a bit twisted. It is only after a raga is chosen that a song is composed ! The choosing of a raga depends on the situation , Music director's likes and dislikes or any sudden inpiration for the music director , etc

Hrishikesh!
By the term `song', Tom probably means `lyric' (or poem) I think!

tom:
music compose panradukku oru raagam vendaama? anything that you compose has to be in some "raga" - whether it is the right usage of the raga or not! - sila samayangal lla ragams are diluted a little bit to give that lighter classical effect or sometimes MD's go with lighter/hindusthani ragas!

isai rasigai..
I think Tom's question is.. he has a song whose lyrics
has been penned down. Now, from the library of
classical ragas (say, in their original unpolluted
forms) he wants to choose an appropriate one.
How should he go about doing that. A GR or KVM
or such guys who are expert at this will do well
with 10 different ragas, I guess! But how do they
choose? Bharathiar seems to have written down
the suitable raga and tala for many of his songs
wothout actually setting them to music. Now how
did he do that?
Perhaps such a discussion shd go to the hub!

hi tom
to choose a raagam for a song(lyric) is not so easy. the situation has to be mentioned, to choose the raagam. of course the words of the song itself will say the situation. bu there again more than one raagam will suit for a particular situation, which will be left to the discretion of the MD to decide, which to select.

Raagas are chosen based on the given situation. If you are a beginner use ragas with five notes such as Hamsadwani,Gambhira nattai , Mohanam , Hindolam,Madhamavati etc... These have straight arohanams and avarohanams and by just playing them you get a feel of the raaga.
