In many keyboards there will be an option called Pitch bend. This is the only one that comes close to gamakam.

mOhan aiyyar says that ensonique synths have some option called continuous play mode or something like that. he apparently sets his synth/kb in this mode and then plays, 'simulates' gamakams with his ultra speed 'key'ing :-), rarely uses pitchbend!! you might want to talk to him. his url is http://www.synflux.com.au/~mohan/music.html . good luck. please listen to his bEgada.

Guys,
Could anyone suggest a good key-board that I can buy. I am a beginner in the key-board and would like to buy a key-board which I can use for playing some carnatic based songs.
Thanks

Hi Everyone,
Keyboard is an instrument specifically designed for western music, whether it be classical, rock or pop. While some modern keyboards may have some digital gimmicks, the resulting gamakam would be nothing compared to violin or veena.
I dont understand why carnatic lovers want to learn keyboards. I suggest that you learn to play the violin instead.

Gamakams can played using a combination of finger movements and pitch bend. Gamakams are of different types such as Aandhola Gamakam, Kambitha gamakam, Daalu Gamakam etc. Refer to the books Harmonium vasika katru kollungal, Key board vaasika katrukollungal and karnadaga sangeethathil gamakangal by Natyacharya Balachandra Raju who has dealt this topic in detail. English versions of these books are also available. These books have been published by Mani Meghalai Publications . The author can be reached at shiv_ranjani@yahoo.com

Kumar Padmanabhan, With the pitch bender you can exploit carnatic music. but it takes a little time to control the bend. In a month or 2 an avereage kb player will pickit up.
