There has been a wide gamut of highly imaginative innovations in TFM by maestros like MSV, IR and ARR. However, have they explored everything? A sure no.
In this thread, I'd like everyone to come up with avenues that have NOT yet been performed in TFM.

For one, I've always wanted a song with non-stop gamagam. By non-stop, I mean really non-stop and that includes pallavi, interludes and charanam. I think a song that comes close is "Kanmaniye kaadhal enbathu"(IR). But the gamagam stops with the pallavi.
Another kind of song I would like to see composed is one with a harmony "level" of 4 or higher sustained throughout the song. Usually a song has three levels of notes - main, chord and bass. I wonder if this has ever been exceeded in TFM even for a small piece.

our MDs compose more no. of songs in raagas like
mohanam, hindolam etc. i would like to see more songs in raagas like kamboji, thodi etc. i dont think IR has composed any full fledged song in kamboji, am i right?

my wish list:
1. a film with an album separated from the movie, like in english films.
2. a good usage of piano in an album.
3. commissioning of professional musicians for different songs in an album.
4. a good album on percussion.

after Ottam and the such, i wouldn't be looking forward to Thaalam:))
also, i would like to see some MD being inspired by the three tenors and come up with something in an operatic fashion.

bb: Yes, there are is no album dominated by piano so far. But we do have piano dominated songs(Yen vaanile) and BGMs(Mouna ragam, Sigappu Rojaakkal). Of course I agree that is not enough.
As for percussion, I have always thought it is lesser than string and wind instruments because I cannot imagine percussion being used to portray ALL emotions. For example, can percussion be used for tragedy? Note that I would be happy to be proved wrong!!
One great innovation that is a one-timer is the aalapana at the start of "Keeravani" (paadum paravaigal) - two aalapanas blended together; easily the best aalapana in TFM IMO. IR also used aalapana for eerie effects in this film. Again this feat was never repeated.

Great topic. it will be good to see a departure from this existing structure of film songs. indian music is so rich in content unlike any other music in the world that composers should think of making more universally appealing melodies with some scope for instrumental creativity.

I have a simple wish to include more cello, acoustic guitars, and harmonica in interludes. These sounds enhance the beauty of most songs and make the interludes memorable. And what about the saxophone? Kadri Gopalnath made a splendid splash in "Anjali" and then quietly disappeared from TFM.
Instead of relegating group harmonies to background vocals, how about picking some singers who complement each other well and recording some acapella songs?(refer to Paul Simon's Graceland, Bobby McFarrin, and some early numbers by Boys II Men)The blend of human voices alone has a magical effect, something that church quires and gospel singers rely on heavily.

Udhaya: I fully agree. Good choral pieces have been few. There has been no really Christian sounding song with choir in TFM although such situations are not rare.

Udhya: Kadri is back in Sangamam, he's done a wonderful Maand accompaniment to Nithyashree's Sowkyamaa. Hope you'll like it. I think a good use of the aucoustic guitar is in the song Uyirum Neeye from Pavithra. Am I right?
I would say that there's one very good Acapella number, this being Raasaathi En Usiru from Thiruda Thiruda. The humming chorus was a lovely blend, along with Shahul's great singing. I do hope though that people use this style more. Please excuse me mnetioning, but the song, I wanna sex you up was a great Acapella number and I hope to hear some like this in TFM.
vijayu: I too agree, it was indeed good to see a 'pure' Maand in Sangamam. Kamboji has not been used since the very olden days. There are many Ragas not used by MD's, I too would like to see them used. IR has contributed greatly to using a variation of Ragas, he has explored so very many and I truely hope he and other MD's uses many more.
