Hi
I just had a look at the Survey section in this
site, and was surprised to see :
IR getting most votes in best MD section,
SPB getting most votes in the best male singer section (Even IR features highly in the singer section !)
I think the guys who have voted in the survey
are getting influenced by the past performances
also.. This is a vote for the best of '98, and
not the all-time best.
So please give your opinions, guys

I think all of us can read and understand english well. Here's someone who is trying to ridicule the voters!!
I think a survey is conducted for knowing the public opinion rather than favouring an individul's wish.

Is this site visited only by IR fans (in the
guise of TFM fans) ?

This DF welcomes U all!!!!!!

I would say most of the people who are vocal here are IR fans!
This forum has a lot more to offer though.
But If you want to read this forum regularly you need to get used to the rhetoric raja is music, Raja is the best etc etc. If your favourite MD is not raja this would hurt initially though :-)
If you look at it as 'a great musician being elevated to the status of being the greatest' then it would tend to overlook some of the statements.
But you will also find a lot of people who think music is too vast to be monopolised by somebody.

Ganesh and V: I beg to differ. I agree that IR fans are vociferous but they are not the only ones.
IMO, the DF has 3 groups, each of which is hyperactive:
1. IR bashers (you can include certain ARR fans among them)
2. IR fans
3. So called neutral people (mind you there are some really neutral guys - this is not to offend them) who think its their duty to remind others to be flat footed. They usually target the IR fans.

Ganesh,
I agree with your statement that 'music is too vast to be monopolised by somebody'. It is 100% true. But, I can't accept that people who are vocal here are IR fans. There has been some IR bashing also. ARR is a newcomer. And he is being criticized often which I feel is ok to some extent. Myself being an ARR fan, I have also criticized ARR in certain issues - like recycling tunes sometimes, choice of singers etc. But, as far as IR is concerned, he is too genius a MD who cannot be criticized. One can criticize some of the songs which he has sung and some of the songs which he has penned. But, as far as his music is concerned, I am sure no one can criticize him, because he has done something great. ARR still has to prove himself to that level. I won't compare IR and ARR since they belong to different generations and ARR still has a long way to go. But IR has proved that he is a genius beyond imagination and he has reached all the dimensions of music. There may be another person who can also come up to that level. Being an ARR fan, I wish ARR to be that person. But, will he? Only time can answer that.
A critic,
You have missed one more group - namely, ARR bashers.

Hi,
By saying ARR as a newcomer, I meant he is a relative newcomer when compared to other MDs like MSV, IR etc.

Hi Mr/Ms. W,
I am planning to start a thread on why the Best of 1998 thread attracts only IR
and IR fan bashers. whadyasay?
There is a word called demographics. maybe that would explain.
(of course who cares about real talent or intrinsic value?)

leave alone IR.
Hariharan deserves to be the singer of 98.
SPB edging out clearly means..voters have
polled for who is overall best? rather than who is best of 98.

Mr/Ms. V... I totally Agree with you.
IR didn't give much music this year. The TFM readers (aka 70 to 80% IR Fans) will include Kadhalukku Mariyadhai in 1997 because the album was released at the end and also in 1998 because the film released only in 98.
OrE oru padathai vechukittu padatha padu padutharanga...
sonna udanE N-ee ARR fan IR basher-nu saNdai poduvanga.. enna paNNa.!!
I haven't heared Kadhal Kavithai. But the songs in "Dheesiya Geetham" didn't impress me. (except "N-aNNba,N-aNNba..."). Even BG is not upto the mark of IR.
Flames > /dev/null...

As if ARR had given too many movies. He has also given only one Tamil Film...Jeans and the Uyire is a dubbing version. Prakash, it is not the quantity, it is the quality. The Best MD also is not just considered by the Number of Hit songs. It includes BGM also. On this fact we can naturally include KM as the movie was released only in 1999. Apart from these films there are Kizakkum Maerkkum and Poonthottam. In both the movies IR work was widely appreciated.
So, not only 1 but I can recollect 4 immediately in TFM itself.
Again, you might say, who listened to Kizhakkum Maerkkum or Poonthottam etc and I can repeat the same for non-IR movies and the argument will just continue.
If IR is getting more Votes, then you guys immediately say newtfmpage is visited by IR fans!!! So, what do you want? ARR/Deva/SAR/VS should be declared as the Best MD of 1998? If the result is favouring your personal wish, then you may say newtfmpage is visited by genuine TFM fans.
When IR fans were complaining about his works are being ignored/neglected for movies like Guru/KM etc all you guys were critisising IR fans.
Now, if he is getting recognised then immediately commenting 70%-80% (Prakash, have you taken any secret survey? If so, please let us know the statistics) etc.
Even if IR fans are away from all these quarrels, I think others will be restless!

Hariharan can never sing like SPB. It is true that Hariharan is a good singer, but can't be compared to the great SPB.

Prakash B,
What???? Desiya geetham's BGM is NOT upto the mark???????
Well, for people like u the lilting flute piece when suresh menon fights(!!!!) in pudiya mugam or that lousy scream of ARR when Rajnikant is chucked out of saratbAbu's house or the same scream when Indian kills somebody might sound Great BGM piece.Won't they????
Sir, just for the sake of it don't argue.

Venkat,
I agree Hariharan can never sing like SPB,
for that matter, he never tried to ! (like Mano,
who started off by imitating SPB ).
Hariharan is basically a ghazal singer, and
hence can do light classical pieces better than
SPB - similarly, SPB can do some of the more lively pieces better.

In the past year,
IR did nothing, so is ARR. (Just Jeans and Uyire, some say it is still popular)
The entire tfm was in a downward trend, thanks to copy supermarkets Deva, Sirpi etc goal is to spoli the Tfm as much as they could.
It is not IR did or ARR did , both did nothing. It what Deva did to TFM, he sc_rewed it up maximum.
God save TFM, Only way is Western musicians should stop composing for 2 months, which will force deva and others to do nothing,.
I see many still taking sides for IR and ARR, I pity them as both did nothing.

Srikanth,
u might be right after all. I can understand that from u'r point of view as a musician yourself, its true that none of IR's or ARR's songs would have been really stunning.
I felt that IR compromised a bit in KK for commercial reasons by making his songs sound like ARR's.(or was it KR's handiwork?)
But in terms of contribution, relatively speaking, IR definitely had MORE good songs than ARR this year, of course, IMO.

V.....I think you are totally mistaken. On what basis are you saying that HH can do light classical peices better than SPB? HH voice is good and he is good singer, but his voice is a far cry from the master SPB. You might disagree, but IMO SPB sings every song to perfection, esp. in South Indian languages. I wouldn't mind listening to HH since he does a good job, but as I said earlier, SPB delivers the punch much better.
