Hi! I was able to get some interesting old magazines which have articles on film music personalities. I was thinking that this may help people understand about musicians a lot better and what others beside tfmer's think about them, not to mention some interesting news about them.
But I want to make sure that you people are interested so please give back some comments and I will start posting if you are all in with me on this.
Thanks Nanri Merci!

The following is an interview with ARR in 1993. Some time right after the releases of movies like Gentleman,Thiruda Thiruda(Chor Chor), and Kizhaku Cheemaiyilea. The magazine is POMMAI November.
Music Should Be Understood by Common Man Too
-ARR
Rahman grew up listening to his mother's heart beat as rythms and his fathers keyboard music as lullabies.
At the age to play in sports, he played with 'sarigamapadani'.
He is a young achiever, bagging the National Award in mid 20's.
Now for you......
THERE ARE MANY EXPLAINATIONS FOR MUSIC. HOW HAVE YOU DETERMINED IT?
Can you imagine a world with no sound. Impossible. Humans need sound all the time. Music is something that brings these sounds into a form.
This is also a form of math. There are many issues such as ups and downs, addition and subtraction involved in this.
Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Depression are part of humanness. Music helps us not to get trapped into one of them and move from one to another easily.
Music is being created with the every movement in this world. There's is no end to it.
WHAT TYPE OF FANS LIKE/ENJOY/WANT YOUR MUSIC?
Everyone who likes tamil like my songs. Even some people who are accustomed to listening to western songs are starting to listen to songs from tamil movies.
I want to compose without deviating from our cultural(marabu?) way. In the same time I want to do something new inside this circle. That music should be understood by common man as well. It will be understood.
Later...

This is an article from Filmalayya that interviewed IR's sons about 3 years ago, when they started out. The same questions were asked but they were met at different places and neither of them knew that the other was being questioned.
It is said that your father helps with your composing?
KR: Wrong information. He said to do it the way I wanted. I have recorded 3 songs for Mannikam. I played them to him. He liked it very much. But I was not satisfied. I have decided to change it. I am saying all this because I want it clear that my father did not help me.
YSR: No. I am doing it the way I please. To date I have finished recording 2 songs. All was my idea. Only if it is a hard issue do I ask him for idea. Once I did not understand what the director said. I asked father. Otherwise, he did not give any help. It is my own work.
Can you compose without having your father's influence?
KR: His influence will show up somewhere. IIt can't be helped. Everyone tryed to work without father's style. They couldn't. After I have settled- I will show my full talent. If I did it different in the beginning and it did not work out then it would not be good.
YSR: Rigght nw, his TOUCH will be there. Not only me, but everyone. I will change it in the future. I will try to make music without his influence.
What is your opinion of your brother's music knowledge?
KR: I don't know what his output is. But I know his taste. He likes pop a lot. Also rap. I can only listen to all that for a little while. 'Is this all songs' is what I wonder.
YSR: He is not like others. He has his style. I cannot be compared with him. His level is different.
Other then the fact that you are IR's son, what other qualifications do you have?
KR: I started learning the piano when I was in 8 grade. Then one day when I went to the studio with dad he gave me the keyboard and told me to play. After that, I went to the studio on all holidays. I played the keyboard and piano. They were all my learning process.
Then I did one song in 'Pandiyan'. Even after that I did a lot for father. I did not want to say that they were my songs. But all the songs I made became somewhat hits. That gave me happiness and excitment.
YSR: The environment that I am in is a big experience for me. I did not go to the studio with my father. I did not discuss abot music with dad or brother. They were both busy and I did not want to disturb them.
Otherwise, experience was putting music for 'Anand' for one song. The pallavi for the song 'Poovuku Poovaalae' was my tune. My father praised me a lot when he heard it. I got hope from that. I was studying in grade 1 then.
Writing music for words or words for music, what style do you want to follow?
KR: Writing words for music brings out the talent in the lyricist. Putting music for words show the MD's talent. I will work so that both talent show.
YSR: Right now, I make them write for the tune. Whatever comes right, that is the way I will go.
Today's music has become loud. How are you? Will you also use the computer?
KR: When you listen to today's songs, you will understand how comfused todays MDs are. My music will not be loud. I will use the computer. We do have to give what the audience want?
YSR: I will give the best as I can. I will use the computer for fast songs. But I will use the orchestra as well.
MD's singing has become the fashion. How will it be for you?
KR: Right now, I don't have the idea of singing. We will see in the future.
YSR: I have sung a rap song in 'aravindan'. I don't have a want to keep singing. If the voice fits I will sing.
What do you like about your father, other then music?
KR: Everything. Especially his discipline and sincierity. Given a time he will be there. In this issue, no musician can come to papa's level.
YSR: Everything. If you want something narrower, then it would be spiritualism.
Have you listened to ARR's music? What is your opinion of his music? What song do you like?
I have seen it when it comes on TV.
YSR: Yes. I like 'kadhal rojaave'.

Thanks Aruvi for giving us the above interviews. I wanted to know their opinion on some of these questions as well. It's quite interesting, but I don't accept their reason for not creating a their own style of music (KR's music is somewhat identifiable, but YSR's??). I think that this is one main reason why they couldn't establish themselves in TFM. I wonder what happened to these two guys now. Are they working on any new movies right now??

Hey! I'm back.
Well I thought that the participants of the forum need a little change so below you can read some comments about IR made by people he has known well. From Pesum Paadam 93
Who is the most important person responsable for IR composing music?
People with talent will always somehow attain their goal. IR had talent. Now he has gained the fame.
But in any case, the credit of having introduced IR under many opposition will go to only Panchu Arunaachalam. When PA announced that IR will be making the music for his film, many that were with him opposed. But PA never let go of his decision. When more people came against it, he made IR sing the songs of "Annakili" at a wedding place before the songs were recorded, with the instruments. IR sang. After that no one opened their mouths. But still, I'm still proud of PA's courage at that time.

BTW I've heard about people being against IR composing when he entered into the industry. Why is that? Does anyone know?
