Mthuresan,
I can't accept pb gave average songs. He's given some wonderful songs like
1) Nandhavana Kuyile
2) All songs from KM & Kannukkul Nilavu
3) Thol Mela Thol Mela (Poomani)
etc..
GA has written very few songs depicting serious situations, I think. But even he had 'Mannil Indha Kadhal indri'... I also think 'Poongadhave', 'Senthoorapoove' were penned by ga.

mthureshan,
Ennanga idhu Vaali-yai Valli aakkittingalae!
I think the surprise candidate here would be Gangai Amaran who is one of the most underrated lyricists of our time. Just think of IR before NizhalgaL. Before NizhalgaL, IR had no VM and didn't use much of Vaali either. Those were IR's golden days in my book. So many rustic, folk songs came out at that time and GA penned most of them.
I would also include Panju Arunachalam who penned IR's first songs and was a crucial influence in IR's early years.

Deepak:
I think "Mannil Indha Kaadhal Andri" was
by Paavalar Varadarajan - there is mention of
Paavalar's name even in the movie.

I think against the populare belief, Vali, GA, and PA has played more influential work for IR than VM. Upto late 70's, kannadasan, PA, vaali ( alaghe unnai aradhikeran, illamai unjaladugurdu, and lot of AVM movies) and even people like muthulingham, kamarasan had penned lot of good songs for IR. VM, IR combo lasted only for about 5-6 years, even in those years, expect BR movies, other also played a crucial role. But over all, I think, vaali mighy be the leading candidate, in terms of quantity of songs, penned for IR.

I totally agree with udhaya and e.hari.
Up to me, apart from VM, the best contributors are Vaali, GA, PA and PB...
In olden days, GA had done some great works like jhonny etc.,

I totally agree with Udhaya, PA,GA were important sources of lyrics. My only doubt is whether it was totally GA or it were modified/recycled pAvalar's songs. More than VM I feel the absence of kannadhAsan more.
Even in the lyrics vs tune thread, I wanted to mention that lyrics are very, very important. Right now, I think VM is being a real asset to ARR.

maNNil indha was by GA (he said so atleast :) apparently in the movie GA wanted the credit to go to PV... for some vague-all reason... moththaththula, GA says he wrote the song.

IR lost many lyricists due to his loyalty to VM. Mu.Mehtha ("Mounamae Nenjil Naalum Nee Ezhuthum," "Thaen Aruviyil Nanaindhidum Malaroa", "Vaa Vaa Vaa Anbae Vaa" and Kuruvikkarambai Shanmugam(did Darling Darling and Andha 7 Natkal but never worked with IR) are much better lyricists than VM but never got a lot of opportunity with IR because of VM.
Muthulingam who penned greats like "Manjolai Kilithaanoa", "Maniyoasai Kaettu Ezhundhu" had an open fight with VM resulting in his never appearing for IR again.
Pulamaippiththan did "Kadaloadu Nadhikkenna Kobam", "Raathiriyil Poothirukkum" and other great songs for R.M.Veerappan produced movies, but never got used a lot by IR for some reason.

Thanks - Poor PV is dead, no one can verify
if GA's claim is correct except for IR???

Udhaya,
We can also add Vasan to the list - who have many good songs, but unfortunately passed away.
Philosopher,
I remember one girl was questioning him on why he didn't mention his name in the credits but instead chose his brothers name. He replied "Konjum yosichu parunga. Padathula idhu gangai amaran ezhudina pattunnu spb solli irundha enna ayirukkumnu. Naa ezhudina neraya pattu makkal visil adikkara madhiri pattu. Andha situationku en per vendamnudhan annan perai use panninen. Irundhalum poi solli irukka vendamdhan."

Happened to notice the name of one M G Vallaban as lyricist in a HMV cassette (song - AgAya Gangai in Dharmayutham)...any idea how many songs he has done for IR and which were they?
BTW, one beauty from Pulamaipithan -`Uchi vagindheduththu pichippoo vacha kiLi', an emotional number (SPB simply excels in it) with non-irritant words (I mean those that are not pushed in to make it `gRamathu pAttu' which VM often does)

Udhaya,
"kadalodu nadhikkenna kobam' is a lovely song. Was it by IR? I don't think so.
