Hi guys,
Everybody compares IR with ARR or SPB with HH.I'am a fan of UnniK but I find Hariharan equally good.I would like to listen to your comments on this topic.Let us not make this a WWF match or a Slug Fest

Srinath,
VaNNa nilavEy is a song from the movie ninaiththEn vandhaai. HH has done a pretty good job with the song though the song did not become a "super hit" as the corresponding Telugu song did. Methinks HH would have done an adequate job with Konji Konji in terms of delivering the tune. However, I have a bias towards SPB (NO!!!, I could have fooled you) and would not venture into a discussion on if there is any song which any other singer can render an SPB song better.

Nahin rajaG, I was only curious if HH's seshtais would have suited a song like Konji Konji better ! People often accuse IR of not letting the singer experiment. IR can let a singer like SPB or SJ experiment. But if HH goes off into his Hindustani style rendition for folk songs, isn't that going to spoil the output ? I wouldn't dream of another singer singing SPB's numbers ! He is the only TFM personality for whom I have an admiration that equals what I have for IR !

Sriram Lakshman,
"Oru Malligai mottu" falls under the same category of songs I had listed earlier. It's hard to articulate the difference between SPB's voice then and now but that won't stop me from trying:
-yes the boyish sound was one knock for sure, I couldn't accept it for a mature man's voice
-I sincerely doubt if he was given songs with a lot of lyrical substance for any stretch of time before the mid70s bonanza. So he mostly had upbeat, jingle-like songs that were tailored for 2nd and 3rd rung movie heroes.
-the emotional integrity of his singing, by this I mean a singer singing like he understands the meaning of the lyrics(HH dies right here)and in an even higher level he understands the relevance of the sentiment behind the words(be it sarcasm, wryness, humor, irony, etc), this charecteristic wasn't brought to fruition in SPB until the mid70s. Try and hear "uchchi vagundheduththu", "kannil enna kaarkaalam", "paadaatha themmaangu" in the voice that sang "oru malligai mottu". It won't pan out. At the same time, hear old classics by SPB in his later value-added voice (I had the pleasure last year at a live concert), those gems resonate even better.
Oh, I have cornered the market on many forgotten, hard to find, out of commission SPB tunes and am still collecting and scouting his tunes every chance I get, so do believe in the sincerity of my standing as a second-to-none SPB fan.

Raj, just slightly off target (by -1.5 years), I am as old(??) as Udhaya:-)
Udhaya,
Not arguing with you as expectations from
music/singing differ from person to person. Our
perceptions of music is no exception as you accentuate the lyrics portions much more than I do. SPB's ability to perceive the movement of melody as nobody else can or has, automatically brings about modulations (which fits into the flow of the tune superbly). This was evident right from the day he stepped into a recording studio. I
bring in this point because you made a mention of HH and UK still in the process of learning the nuances of playback singing. HH is no beginner, he was given a peep-in by RDB way back in '82 in the movie "Dard ka Rishta" (and that was an apology for singing ) and UK has functioned as a track singer for sometime (this is absolutely true, he was the track singer for 'Kootathile
Koyilpura!!!').
SPB's voice then, did not have the resonance or the base it posessess now and therefore the modulations were not as well pronounced as they appear to be now, they suffer in comparison only to the standards he himself was to set later on , primarily owing to his deepening voice.I will
take up the song "Oru malligai mottu" as an example, just to explain how I "received" it as a listener (with respect to the vocals).
The third line "Sill yena poothathu ithazh vittu" has the tune picking up pace and note how SPB modulates here, so much in accordance with the melody. The stanza (starts with the lines "Oorarintha thirudan endru pereduthathundu") is quite pacy and SPB sings it with a puch till the melody gets set to a waltz beat ("Udalodu
uruvaana pasiondru undu") and it is easy to note that SPB sings it in a "hushed" manner. Each time the charanam ends and the tune boomerangs back to the pallavi,SPB sings it in a manner as if he is just playfully stressing on what he said earlier when the song commenced. To me, all this is superbly subtle voice modulation. In this case the lyrics would not give you the goose pimples, but the singer has shown remarkable sense of melody with hardly any experience to back him.
Of course, sorry for the digression guys, I just
remembered that this thread was all about UK and HH :-)

I personally think that Unni is the best that ever was. His voice isn't too masculine nor feminine but somewhere in between. Hariharan or SPB don't stand a chance.

I really don't understand why you always go for comparisons. Everyone is best in his own way. Can you compare HH with KJY? or UK with KJY? Someones voice suits some situation or artist. Don't argue who is best. If that is the case, we would have had only one male and female singer at a given point of time. Also everyone is biased towards some one. So I don't think any one is going to accept so and so is best or something like that. Take it easy guys. I appreciate your
postings. You seem to read between the lips
