Hi Kitcha,
I had attended the concert at Fairfax. I had blown 200 bucks for the concert.. Although I got what it was worth for, the irritation was that there were less Tamil songs.. This was inspite of the crowd going bonkers when there were Tamil songs.. As u had said we were all expecting Tiruvalikeni Rani or Maya Maya from Karthik. Didnt happen. Probably my gut feeling was the organizers had forced a list of Hindi songs into Rahman's hand. The way the concert went, sounded like he had control what he want to do.

Show tomorrow in Dallas. I am going to be there.
Hope a miracle happens and the organisers change the songs list to all-tamil. Since Dallas Tamil Sangam is taking a major role, hope to see some changes in the songlist.
Did anyone get to meet the artists personally before or after the show ?

Kum Laden -
I am only guessing, but it might be directly related to the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and yesterday Toronto declared a city wide Medical Emergency. They have had to quarantine many people.
Vancouver has managed to contain the spread of the virus/flu.

heard that there were 4 tamil songs out of ~30. SPB sang a stanza of "oruvan oruvan", Hariharan - a stanza of "Nila Kaaigiradhu". Baba rap song was also there. there was one more.
no tamil female singer - no KSC, no Sujatha. hope you don't count Vasundhara & Sadhana as tamil singers :-)
some of my friends (marath thamizhargal!!) were totally disappointed.

ArRahman Rocked Dallas yesterday!!!!
The man of few words did it again... The show was magical in all respects...
The plus and minus of the the Dallas show
(+=Moments of pullarippu)
+ The very first appearance of ARRahman... (the crowd went bonkers)
+ ARR's Vellai Pookkal
+ HH Nila Kaigirathu, Udhayaa (esp when he sang a gazal and then in the sama raagam sang udhayaa)
+ Chaiaya chaiya (sukvindar got excited and got off stage to dance with the front benchers.. who were the VIPs)
+ Naveen Kumar on the flute... (Saathiya and Bombay theme)
+ Drums Sivamani - Thani Aavarthanam
+ SPB
+ Shankar MD's "gaanaa gaana gana", to make it rain in (already storm stuck) Dallas..
- : (in my humble opinion)
- Sound/Acoustics. I dont think it was well planned and at some points the bass was too too too much.... i almost felt like closing my ears..
- Missing a beat. Sonu Nigam did it once and ARR did it once (in his vande matharam.. cause he slipped and feel off his little keyboard ministage from the center)
- Hariharan's improvization (was irritating while SPB's improvization was enchanting..)
- mix of telugu/tamil/kannada/hindi/french/german songs.... ahahhhhh!
- very few tamil songs (i guess it was just 2)
- Blaaze's monotonous rap steps and hand movements
- Udit Narayan and Hariharan - bad posture during Jana Gana Mana.. (does someone have to teach them?? they had their hands folded.)
- Finally, our own Indian makkal...
Running helter skelter to get out of the parking lot first while our National Anthem is being sung.. didn't they learn in school the respect you have to give to your national anthem and the way you have stand while the national anthem is on ?? I am not being picky. Beleive it or not it just shows our culture!!!
Overall, it was enchanting and magnetic!!!
ARR didnt speak a lot just a few words.. but he did it with grace!!!!

In that Rediff slideshow of ARR's concert, they had mentioned about the reasons of very few Tamil songs. They had mentioned that the last time ARR toured in US, one of the drawbacks was there were too many Tamil songs (almost 40%) and the crowd didnt respond favourably. So, this time they are trying to keep the Tamil songs to as few as possible. One more change this time is lesser number of musicians as the costs involved last time made it tough for the producers to break-even.

I had gone for the NY concert. I think the sound was a universal problem in all concerts. The Bass was too spread here too. But, hats off to the crowd, they participated eagerly & with a lot of Vigor. It was great to see the audience stand and sing Vande mataram with gusto & then Janagana Mana. Everybody waited till the national anthem got over. I heard that Sonu was a little off his usual elements in the LA show also, same with NY. But all in all, it was a memorable event. Hats off ARR!!

Digression - Some background info about the Miami Univ Collegiate chorale who performed with ARR in NY.
They are based in Miami University in Oxford Ohio.
This univ has a good World Music program, with the
Global Rhythms World Music ensemble and Collegiate chorale. They have 3 faculty, Srinivas Krishnan (artistic director and all in all), Roger Davis (he directs the orchestra and does the arrangements), and Ethan Sperry (who directs the chorale). The Global Rhythms ensemble usually plays along with the Collegiate Chorale. They used to (and still) do carnatic music arranged for a Western Classical orchestra. For the past year or so they have been including Indian film songs (rearranged for a WC orchestra) in their shows. V.S.Narasimhan and V.Sekar from the Madras String Quartet performed with them last year. BTW Sekar (Kunnakudi's son) is the cellist in Rahman's troupe. In addition to Chale Chalo
the chorale also sings Africa Kaatupulee (from Aalavandhaan) and Nimbuda Nimbuda. It is very interesting to see Americans (who mostly comprise the orchestra and the choir) sing
tamil and hindi songs.

BTW, for any ARR haters, go to this URL:

I don't think that anyone in the whole Indian Film Industry has pulled off shows with 80-90 Thousand people as audience. To top this, I doubt that most people would have even pulled off shows that fill 15000 people in a foreign country!
ARR is certainly a crowd puller and a man with thousands of fans, worldwide!

Guys please enlighten me about upcoming show in Dubai.I heard they have some dispute in decicing the venuw. Dubai Tennis Stadium denied access I believe. Tennis Stadium is a mickey mouse venue for a big crowd puller like AR Rahman. Would say Dubai Festival city open grounds is the best venue. My adrenalin is pumping at its best looking forward for the show. Dubai people come on !!!! lets enjoy when ARR showers his musical rain on us...
