oli interview translated....very fast one...
---------------------------------------------
its well known to the world that u are an expert in keyboards...what
are the other
instruments that u can play..?
for sometime i was learning guitar....but keyboard was my main
instrument....
U happen to meet maniratnam at an award ceremony and thats where u
gotyour break for roja....how did this happen...
A relative of maniratnam trilok sharadha introduced me to maniratnam
at the award ceremony and i invited him to my small
studio...panchatan..then after about six months later, he came to my
studio and asked....last time u invited me to your studio...so if u
have any tunes just showit to me...SO i gave all i had...."but i
actually didn't know what was it for...and there was no answer for
about one week"..so i thoght thats it...i lost my chance...
later he came back and spotted all the good ones...and planed
to go with thiruda thiruda first...then he came back and said lets
do roja....
there are many awards u've won...which award is most valueble for
u...
Our indian padmashree award and more valueble is when a song
influences a guys heart and mind...10 years later when he hears song
he should feel that the song has influenced him or get the
rememberance of when hewas schooling or going to college or in
love....thats more important for me...
u've scored for many movies....which was the movie u took long time
to score...
u cant say....all scores are different....sometimes when the director
thinks its easy to score it may be difficult for me or its the vice
versa...it may not be cos of the music but may be the frequency
range between the director and music director...
which movie took u so long to score and didn't succeed...
hhmmmm....theres alot...but if u take thiruda thiruda...some of the
songs took one to two months to compose....and after finishing that
it failed and i got upset....
the movie failed but the songs were super hits....
ya but songs also only after a month or two it took up..but at that
time by the grace of god, songs were accepted by the people even
if the movie didn't do well ...
Did u figure out why songs deosn't become hit...
sometimes a simple songs becomes a big hit....i think it depends also
on the song picturization and the succes of the movie...
So u have been scoring for many hindi movies too...how is it working
with the north indian and south indian...what are the difference...
hhmm...people here eat roti chanai(singapore) like we eat idli in
india...so its just the taste...in hindi they have thier fav. raags
and instrument and in south we have our fav ones too....if alittle
carnatic is used in a hindi song they find it hard to accept
it...but we use a hindustani raag and we'll like it...
lately some of ur dubbings also are succesful...how is that.,..
the melody is composed semi clasicaly.....so it can be siuted in
both hindi and tamil...
U have done several non film album...and vande mataram was one of
it..how was it working with legends like nusrat fateh ali khan....
vande mataram was completed within 4 months.... i meet NFAK in new
york when i and my friend barath bala attended the sony music
meeting...so we were trhilled watching around 6000 americans and
indians dancing to his tunes there....so decided to meet him....then
we agreed to work and he respected us alot...and i think it was has
last song.....after that he was ill and...
After that u've done bombay dreams with andrew llyoid
webber...stirring up britain audience...
how did u get that oppotunity....
My frien shekar kapur had to work on a movie with andrew...and that
time he played some of my tunes to andrew....and after that both of
them came up with an idea of doing an play based on my music....than
we worked on it for two and a half years...
there was a time only SPBala Sjanaki mano chitra were the only
common singer....what made ubreak that barrier and bring in new
singers...
mainly last time that standard timing to complete a song is 7
hours....if u exceed that limit people look at you like you've
committed a sin.....so i realized in west they take so much time
to record and complete a song considering quality than
quantity....so i too wanted to utilize that formula...why not take
more time and produce quality songs...so for that i had to use new
singers...and new singers can sing Extraordinarily....but they can't
sing it in 3 hours....they may take 2 or 3 days...so i give them the
time and give new flavour to the audience....some voices like
minmini and anupama and so fresh....but some songs....no body else
can sing....only SPB or janaki only can...they have the stamp...
which young singer has impressed you...
if you take the current generation of singers....all of them are
good....hindi nor tamil...the current generation of new comers are
all extraordinary....but i think they're concerntration
are diverting....first they come to sing....then act then......u
know now they have MTV and all the video....so they get
diverted....so don't think the dedication which was there before
will still exist....
The pronaounciation in language now days are not given
importance...some singers from north comes down
and sing....do u think it is necessary in tamil movies.......
basically if u realise..there is nothing such things like that....u
keep doing it if the song is well recieved by people....suppose if
udit narayanan sings...the song becomes a hit...then again they call
him to sing...i think its just for charm...those days if u see p
susila..she is a telugu....now sadhana sargam..she is hindi
but...most of her tamil songs i heard she has pronounced tamil
well...i 've warned her to take care of her
tamil too...don't worry...
U have worked with ilaiyaraja forsome time...how was the expirience
working with him...
ilayaraja sir has worked with my father as a keyboardist
also.....then a worked with him as akeyboard player...
and we are almost like a family....so..what happened when i worked
there was i have learned lots of thing...its like a music

strings...arrangements and an extraordinary results within a short
period of time and so on....but i had wanted to go beyond
cinema...and thats why i got out....to jingles...i heart felt more
better...
which young music directors has impressed u ....
now there are many of them doing well....if u take
yuvan,vidhyasagar,harris,.....whats his name..barathwaj...
all are good...if u listen to some thier songs...they are very
nice....
lately u have been composing for only big names like maniratnam,
shanker, kadhir, rajini.....do you have any reason
for that or ....is it becos of ur time constraint....
main reason....for the past one year...the whole audio market has
dropped down badly becos of piracy...almost 80% percent has dropped
down....so the budget of paying for quality music has gone down
and the budget of making quality too has reduced....and the whole
journey today is to actually supprt originalty good music ......bcos
there is a story.....one day a king told to everyone to pour milk
into thier tin and went...and finally ended up all poured water in
thier tin....like that every one will think others will sure buy
original..or there'll be sure people to buy original and finally end
up most of thembuy pirated......
U doing a good job and oli crew wishes u success....and so tell us
about your family....
familly i have two daughters...kathija and rahima...and i can meet
them frequently as my studio is attached to my house....
who is ur fav tamil poet...
actually tamil poet..theres alot...barathiar, kannadasan,
vairamuthu,vaali...now kabilan,,,and a young one...pa vijay...
Ok now...ur latest movie for shanker boys...we heard that there are
16 songs in it....how is it....what kind of
music can listeners expect....
.......boys will have a full musical feel like how kadhaalan had
those days(94-95)....
but this is more futhur up......we are still working on it so i
can't say much.....
have sung in it too...
no...yet to sing....
all the songs u sang are high pitched....why is that...is it bcos u
aound good like that..?
hmmmmm.....no i did vellai pookal....(laughs)...i did that song just
to avoid questions like this...
ok what are ur future plans....
no future plans....leave everything to god...if u asked me last week
will i be coming here...i wouldn't have any idea about it...
can using for ur fans out there the vellai pookal song....
no...no..no...please...u can play the song.....
