In all of tfm history, which year do you think produced the best music? Take into account the richness provided by diverse styles of MDs, variety in songs, captivating effect of interludes, music as value addition to the movie, and of course excellent renditions by singers and lyricists.
Lets substantiate by quoting sufficient examples and analysis that heighten the pleasure of recollection...(in other words, avoid one-liners, idol-worship and idle provocations!)

1992 is my spontaneous choice as the best year in tfm history.
This was very much a landmark year for most of our MDs. IR had at the turn of the decade shrugged off the post-Mohan rut triggered by the Ramarajan factor. Excellent songs and interludes in Dhalapathi in late 91. Happily he carried on innovations well into 92. There were enough good songs filling all genres of tfm. Delightful and memorable numbers from Mannan, Pandian, Senthamilpattu, Sembaruthy, Vanna Vanna Pookal, Singaravelan, Devar magan, Nadodi Thendral, Meera, Deiva Vaaku, Chinna Kounder, Sathriyan, Aavaarampoo to name a few. Quite a hot streak! Dont forget to reflect on the interludes in those films. Heightened usage of western sections in many of his songs.
Deva's Annamalai(a June release) was a proper hit for Rajini, paving the way for a sustained association with the star. Just when we were floating on the peak came ARR with Roja(his best IMO), a rose without thorns! Stirring melodies of outstanding sound quality. The style was very new to tfm, but the effect - certainly no less. Kaadhal Rojave perhaps the best song ever to get SPB at his emoting best.
I thought Vairamuthu really scintillated in Roja, one of his career best.
While Roja brought in a few newcomers, we had Chithra and Swarnalatha joining SJ at the top....KSC, SL, SJ forming as solid a trio as VJ, PS, SJ in the late 70s.
tfm was never the same again...the quality did go down from this peak, but still very good in '93.

I would go back much earlier to the 1960s.
Songs produced then were not a dime a dozen and every song produced were carefully planned and well-organised. Quite easily, 90% of the songs produced then were hits and are forever etched in memory.
The difficult part would be selecting the year. :)

is there a chronological discography of MSV anywhere on the net? maybe newtfmpage can get some people together to compile it like Manisekaran did for KVM & Saravanan for VJ.

s0, the closest to a discography that you can find is here
http://newtfmpage.com/ppp/msv_des.html
The top 2 links on the page.
I am not sure if the list is complete.
Its kind of disappointing that the great MDs from the 60s dont even have a complete discography compiled anywhere on the net. I had requested our TFMDF enyclopeadias(Saravanan, Manisekaran) to compile such a list, but its a mammoth task
and quite time consuming even for them and its unfair to expect them to do it all by themselves :-) I would request them however, if possible, to go through the above lists and make suitable additons wherever needed. That would probably be better than starting from scratch.

thanks vijay.
yeah, as you said, it might be a bit too much to ask someone to do the job. but I just hope that someone will get the motivation to do it someday.
Prabhu: I agree with your choice of the best year in TFM. probably the early-IR period from 78-82 come close with MSV also proving a point with his Ninaithale Inikkum, varumaiyin Niram Sivappu etc.. & KVM in Sankarabharanam (TeFM though). but the earlier years, I have no clue.
