IR excelled in all the movies last year. But as usual no matter how well others perform ARR will get the award.

Rahman for LAGAAN. theres no doubt about this at all.
actually no REAL contenders this time in my opinion.
but, again since national awards have mostly ignored Rahman and given awards to other music dirsctors, im just a bit apprehensive.

please dont expect the national awards jury to award rahman. rahman was always given a raw deal by the ntl jury.
no doubt, lagaan SHOULD get it this time.
its the really deserving winner with superb songs and magnificent bgm.
i have been following the national awards for a long time now. and going by the past experience,
i no longer hope for rahman to win it.
going by past, may be his year award will go to uttam singh for gadar.

I am sure the juries these days do not look beyond Hindi films for National Awards: So ARR does have a chance. He has definitely given better music in HFM this year. Coupled with the fact that Lagaan as a movie has been such a success, and now with an Oscar nomination, the movie may harvest huge rewards at the National level too (at least to prove a point that their taste matches that of the Academy!)
But, if the Southie bias has to work this year as well, then surely it will be for Anu Malik for Mujhe Kuch Kahna Hai (copy of The Pavan Kalyan-Keerthi Reddy film in Tamil/Telugu) or Asoka (which was actually ghost-composed by Ranjeet Barot).
Ditto for playback singers. The Alka Yagniks and Udit Narayans are waiting to celebrate(perhaps they already know, as did Anil Kapoor and Raveen Tandon alst year). And I am sure the Wealthy Chopras and Johars are lobbying heavily for their candy-floss romances with utterly butterly run-of-the-mill stale music.
I won't be surprised if people like Sadhana Sargam & Hariharan could win.. for their Tamil numbers (ahem)???
If they go for quality (in songs as well as BGM) IR has a good chance in Azhagi, Kutti and KAsi. Even though the above films pale in comparison with IR's Guru, which was as usual ignored by the tasteless jury, they do have a chance.
Perhaps, an MD from Telugu, Kannada, Mal, Oriya or Bengali industry could win this year!!!

I guess this is too extreme a statement to make.
South Indian MDs HAVE got NAs when they deserved. I have heard the scores of Lagaan, Azhagi, Kaasi... and I personally feel Lagaan should win easily. And many people agree with me. Lets give credit to ARR when its due, I guess.
The entire BGM score for Lagaan is truly excellent. "Radha kaise na jale" is a brilliant song with a lively and yet classy tune! "Oh palanhare" is a delectable bhajan with some gorgeous interludes. And not to mention the "ori chhori" song with Vasundhara Das coming in with those English pieces. ARR deserves it for sure, its truly one of his best works!!
then surely it will be for Anu Malik for Mujhe Kuch Kahna Hai (copy of The Pavan Kalyan-Keerthi Reddy film in Tamil/Telugu) or Asoka (which was actually ghost-composed by Ranjeet Barot).
Both were extremely ordinary scores. I dont think they would ever give to AM this year for either of these movies. The Asoka songs (whether or not they were ghost composed by Ranjit Barot --> AM doesnt have the humility to accept it, even if thats true) dont gel with the situations in that film, nor do they suit the period which the film is supposed to depict.
Coming to singers, if you go through the list of awards, many many south Indian singers have won it when they deserved. Yes there were great songs for which they got no award, but thats true for some Northern singers too, I say. After all its just one award per year, and so many great songs competing for that one award. Not everyone can be pleased!
