//"ARR said that he does not listen to others's music "//
yaaro,
I read this interview of ARR when he said this. I wud say it does looks weird when he is quoted out of context. The interview was something like this
I have recreated the follw from memory...
//"Q: Your song " varay yen thozhi.." from jeans sounded like "oh! mere sona re" and " Oh! bhavree " from daud sounded like "oh! saaathe re".
why?
Ans: Yes! it is true. I was listening to "oh mere sona re" and somehow that should have been in the back of my mind while composing jeans..which is why this happened. Thats why I try and not listen to current music stuff nowadays because its so distracting and interfering."//
What Dr. Laksminarayan did was mis-interpret it in such a way that it sounded as if ARRwas trying to compose stuff w/o even listening to any of his previous composers at all...
I personally think its impossible for ARR NOT to have listened to other tamil music at all....
correct me if I am wrong... but Dr. lakshmi Narayans postings is wonderful to read.. i like him but I found this a glaring anomaly even when i read this the first time....

Bharat,
Did ARR really answer like what you have written ? He does not seem to have an answer for the other song. (Both songs are classics and even I, who dont listen to much hindi music, seem to have heard them). Maybe ARR wanted to improvise on these classics.

Kiru,
the words or not exact verbatim but the point was the same...
I am not sure the second song was mentioned in the interview.. its common knowledge about the 1st song mentioned.
I know that the second song was also inpired..but I thought I came to know about it thro this interview only.. i may have found it myself of thro some other source... its been a long time...

Guys
What we call innovation in both IR and ARR is largely westernization of Tamil music...IR did it by
introducing Western Classical Orchestral arrangements..ARR is doing it today using digital technology...both their strengths lie in their ability to successfully fuse the best of both worlds - Tamil and the West. Can this be called innovation ?

First of all
Sorry Saketh, I did not read the sender's name properly before addressing it to you and Trend thanks for taking it on you :-)
Let me add more oil
Bharath,
If you have misconception that I was equating ARR and IR in that "ClassTeacher-9thStdStudent" then sorry, I was not attempting that. I was just saying that example to trend's idea of bringing in theni kunjaramma, which was not correct to what yaaro was talking about. That is all.
Now
----
Ilayaraaja: I did something beyond the scope of my work definition when I was in my 150th movie.
ARR: Hey I did something like that in my 3rd movie.
so get it! there is a difference between a specific instance of "innovation" by two people and a generic instance of "attempting to do innovation" between two people.
------
This is also based on what is the "scope of the work" for IR and ARR, right? :-)
We cannot just generalise it to "music making" because their pattern of music making is different. If we won't consider that then our case would be something like the following:
An admirer of a innovative(?!) Carnatic Performer X: After 10 years of kutchery experience that X bhagavathar made a novel attempt of singing carnatic songs by standing and holding on the mike. I think its a kind of innovation.
Friend of the admirer: Hey Britney did it in her first album itself that too something more, she danced for her songs. She is more a innovator than your X. I am saying this because both X and Britney are into music making.
What we have to see is given same "scope of work i.e. pattern of music making" we have to compare the innovations of IR and ARR. But in reality is the "scope of work" same for IR and ARR? No. then how can we do the comparison.
So I was not into comparing them. And as I stated I just tried to help Trend to wipe out his misconception about Theni kunjaramma factor.
I am not knowledgeble enough to discuss about IR and ARR's innovation.
As a rasika I like the style, work, output etc etc of IR more than ARR that is all. I have some reservations for ARR also. But I don't belittle his performance. The quality I learnt from this forum.
