What was the reason for the temporary downfall of raja between '94 and '97 . Is it because of the ego he had during that period that won him a lot of enemies or was it because of the deterioration of his songs...?
I believe part of the reason was because of gaining enemies and not many of them signed him.
Also, his songs were not that good during that period. But I wont blame him for that entirely. It's also because of the not-so-good directors who signed him during that time. I've seen that raja's compositions are spectacular if he works with the good dirrector. He wants some amount of involvment from the director's side, explaining the situation, scenario etc. for exmaple. raja does a great job on all kamal's movies..
what do you guys think....??

Hi All,
It is true that there was a downfall in IR and his music. But, certainly that is not due to his inability to produce good music. He was just probably watching TFM with his absense. Then he might have found the direction it goes and the problem they encounter, he decided to come back.
All these directors Cheran and KS Adiyaman said once that they coulnt get IR for their film in the past. There was a romour (dont know how far it is true) that Maniratnam has also asked him to compose music for his 'Iruvar'. He knew that he could come back if he wanted to. He did as he promised last summer.

A producer's son told me that by 1990, IR was doing up to 85 movies at a time including Tamizh, Kannada, and Telugu. He was so busy that most of the BGM was done by assistants (some of them done by MSV). IR would just give his notes at one recording studio for one movie and move on to the next movie's recording.
Even famous producers or directors were given five or six sample tunes from which they had to pick their favorites. While IR is an oasis of music to handle such a demand, the quality of songs certainly took a hit. There were still gems here and there but the overall richness and invention that was found prior to the "Sagalakalaavallavan" stage of his music slowly disappeared. This could be one of the reasons. Also, a man such as IR who is reaching for bigger things in individual recordings, could have easily gotten bored with making simple pop music for TF. He even said in an interview that he's just been serving appetizers and hasn't even served the feast yet.

A lot can be told, but there is one thing prepotent. Earlier IR worked with directors like BR, MR, Balachandar, BM, B'raj etc. who really had talent. Later there weren't many who could really inspire IR.

I too feel, as Udhaya pointed out, that IR got bored of composing commerical songs. But we were lucky enough to get some real good ones here and there (ofcourse the background score being his speciality). But I should admit that IR had this special way of composing tunes for films where the heroes were not 'that' commanding. For example films of Mohan and Ramarajan. Though people generally mock at these heroes, it undeniable that songs of these stars are amazing.
Post 1995, I feel IR lost his original touch. Wonder if he is competing with the likes of IR. Earlier even his westernised compositions had 'Indian-ness' in them like "Ninnu kori". I wish I had the old Ilayaraja back.
