Both songs were sung by the legendary SPB+SJ, the only diff is "Sundari" was compossed by IR, while "Malare" was composed by Vidhyasaagar, both of these songs were mega hit at that time, but surely one must be better than other :)

Kannan and Prabhu,
shouldn't you be saying 'latest', instead of 'last' ?

Indeed...Veera was the last :)
Pardon the sinner.....
NagaS ... given the current trend of Rajini films.. I'm not at all bothered whether IR is ever going to rekindle that old flame.. may be it would be in the best interest of IR that he never work with him again. My Mum and Dad were blessed (??) with watching that complete mockery of a movie and all they had to say was "Antha Kaalaththu Saami Padamellam itha vida evvalavo better" :)

Sundari was far better than malare....Lots of differences in the two songs... Sundari is the perfect example of a matured or experienced MD.. IR's variation in this song is great... One of my all time favorites of IR....
Malare, on the contrary was good but showed the inexperience of VS.. lots of unnecessary beats in the song... should have used tabla instead of the techno beats...
SPB sang Sundari with ease, whereas he has put effort in Malare to make it sound good... IMO, Sundari stands out as probably the best of SPB-SJ/IRR combination....

I think last is right. latest means present time right now. Veera and Thalapathi are not latest.

I don't think you are right. The dictionary defines "latest" as "up to the immediate present; most recent or most up-to-date" which accurately describes the present situation because we don't know yet if IR is going to compose music for another Rajni movie. If he doesn't and retires, then the word "last" is appropriate. So NagaS is right, IMO.
Sorry for this digression.

Hayya, because of my post, music discussion went into a soll aaraaychchi ... I am happy ;-)
IMO, IR and Rajni may or maynot work together, but calling it as 'last' is NOT correct ethically !

sundari ..off course.. malare mounama is nuthing special ..standard melodiuos song which many except Deva would compose.. but sundari is awesome... especially the mood it creates... the lyrics.. when u listen to the words.. "servathe nam jeevane".. look out for the flaring violin pieces in the background.. simply fantastic...the song takes you thorugh various orchestrations ..like the war field.. the anticipation..and then the saranams with simple tabla and violin... i think it should rank as one IR masterpiece... all dhalapathi's songs were recorded in Mumbai..and at the end of this song's recording (also rakamma).. people there (the hindhi musicans).. gave a standing ovation to IR....
i am not undermining Vidyasagars talent.. he is too talented to remain in the sidelines .. but then the song we choose to compare the two isnt justified at all..
hats off to both!!

Orchestration for the song Sundari, the opening, interludes are no match for the run of the mill melody malare mounama.. Comaprison itself is stupid.

Awe...if u had said that "run of the mill melody" for "sakka sakkkka sakkki saa" kind of melody (please note that no plural) then i would have agreed with you 200%. But, definitely malarae is not "run of the mill" melody. Ofcourse, sundhari is far ahead of malarae(IMO, also).

keeping liking for IR and ARR apart...can somebody compare "veera paNdi kotayilae" and "rakkamma kaiyya thattu" in terms of tune building, orchestration etc., etc.

this thread is getting interesting well kUPPS MADE A GOOD POINT keeping the musicans apart and comparing the songs wcich shows a healthy trend.
here are some of the views in my opinion.
Rakkamma.. : sometimes i wish to push IR into that era again....although Rajini is standardised with many an opening song.. this was a la perfuct!! the way it was picturised with mamooty asking nagesh .. "i have to see him..where is he"..and then cut there and proceed to the soothing harmony of guitar soothing pieces giving you an indication of that a major orchestration is to come.. not before long the violins blaze through .. the creator of violin would be proud of this song!! :-) ... everything in this song seems to picture perfuct!!.. although not helped by good lyrics.. this song seems to hold the listeners by its sheer magic..be it the interludes or the use of chorus .or the part where everything melloes down ..or the usage of sound using fingers.... everything seems to be in place...
just before i wanted to discard this song as a classic .. IR in the sarams stops the orchestration inthe saranams and lets his Bass guitar rule when SPB goes hyper... that makes me rank this song as a masterpiece..i wonder what would have been the emotions of the musicians when they composed this song!!.. Mani ratnam deserves a pat too for bringing the best out of IR..
Veera pandi ....
ARR proves that he is not lacking far behind with his amazing use of vocals...the humming in the beginning of the song is sure somthing..ARR brings in a new sound that is like the druming on thavil or something... the main attraction of this some is the way " nee sollum sollukulle".. is been fitted into the song..that gives u a pep for the whole song... ARR cannot be far behind IR in terms of orchestration.. the way he used the violin.. the drums and vocal humming.. is completely astounding... the difference in his saranams..is that he lets the singer sing with no sound in the back and then fills in the music.. thats something clearly different.. this song is more like a western classical... rather than tfm.. though IR modified his song to tamil classic.. ARR seem to be there int eh western classic mold.. especially the flutes so beautifully conveys the eerieness and the drums of the magnitude of the song... totally astonishing.. one of the best compositions from rehman...
well well well .. to choose from these is a tough task... ARR is helped with good lyrics.. which makes it even more passionable... while IR ..rules the orchestration part.. though IR songs.. conform to the rules of music.. ( the 4 beat ) .. ARR ..defies logic and still comes up with a winning number...
i think i would go with ARR'S veerapandi kotaile... since the whle song was different.. no two stanzas were different....
thankx ..

I too agree with Keeps, though I would like to mention one thing here. I was hospitalised at that time when Dhalapathi songs realised. I met with an accident. Only this song and Sundari song were my companion during those 10 horible paining ten days in Hospital. Sundari song used to so some thing to me, so I used to always switchoff that in the middle and the Rakkamma song I think I would have played that 1000 times for its magic. My liking to RK started at that time onwards I believe.

kupps, i think my vote would go to 'Rakkamma'.. the grand beginning with the violin and the song doesnt lose the speed even after the 'kunitha puruvamum' piece...veerapandi on the other hand was also a great song with transitions from minor to major and viceversa throughout the song... Rakkamma was better than veerpandi kottayile not by much though....
