Suitability of singers who sing for actors:

I'm sure everyone agrees that when you look at an actor, you get quite an idea of what his voice would sound like. For example, you would expect Kamal to have a manly voice (so you'd expect singers like SPB or Hariharan to sing for him), and you'd expect Prashanth to have a boyish voice (and so you'd expect singers like Unni Krishnan to sing for him). But there many instances, especially in A.R.Rahman's films, when for example, an actor like Prashanth gets sung for by Hariharan, and it looks very inappropriate.
Deva sometimes sings for actors himself, and that's even worse.

Well, in "Kaadhalar Dhinam", Kunal got sung for by Unni Krishnan, Unni Menon, S.P.Balasubramaniam, and M.G.Srikumar. Yes, I agree this is funny.

chitra, swarna or Harinis voice would have suited kunaal better than unnis/shris.

CSG, I agree with you about Karthik, except on the point that Deva's voice suits him. Deva's voice would only suit Manivannan or Goundamani.

Hariharan's and Unnikrishnan's voices usually suited Ajith depending on the character/age of the character. In KKKK Shankar Mahadevan's voice too was suitable (probably cos it's very much like Hariharan)

This business of voice suiting actors is merely in illusion in 99% of the cases. Had Mukesh been singing for Kamal ever since his 'Sollaththaan NinaikkirEn' days, we would be marvelling at how the voice matches the actor's perfectly. Mukesh could have even taken the liberty of claiming to modulate his voice to suit Kamal:-)

Udith Narayan singing for Rajinikanth (Muthu) was Abatham. Strangely, Kamal singing for himself somehow doesn't suit him. Unnikrishnan's voice on Prabhudeva is like eating gulab jamun with sambar sadam. No, no, I don't refer to PD as GJ or....I simply mean, it doesn't suit him. Someone like Suresh Peters will sound better on him.

SL: oru dhadavai mukEsh singing "ulaga vaazhkkai nadanam, nee oppukkonda payaNam....." and kamal dancing on the walls of the well....yOsichchu paarththEn. mei silirththu pOyiduththu. What a great loss to TFM:-)

even though voice mathcing might be illusional as SL points out in cases like the Udit-Rajni combo its outright absurd;)) not only because of the voice but because of the pronunciation as well. Note how SPB sings 'indrikkum endrikkum' in raakaama deliberately to suit rajni's pronunciation.
it requires that extra effort to change ones voice and mimic the actor to the best possible extent. SPB was the best in it. the present crop of singers are not even there.

SL: Digression! BTW, a hypothesis in human psychology. The association among two people is strong when they have common likes, BUT it is STRONGER for common dislikes!:-) Case in point SPB and Mukesh.

Digression:
G, as an aside, do you want to know what SPB said about Mukesh in the finals of 'Padutha Theeyaga' (the finals won by Parthasarathy)? Quote " Sometimes in life, the simplest thing becomes the most difficult thing to emulate. For example, nobody can sing as straight as Mukesh".

Csg,
Arjun is another actor on whom most singers' voice would suit.
