There has been much discussion about folk music etc but let's discuss about the exact folk music forms used in TFM. Folk music is very vague - it is often confused with tappAnguthu. But in reality, TFM (Tamil Folk Music :-) ) has very clear forms like
themmAngu
kAvadi chindhu
noNdi chindhu
I don't know much about any of these; that's why I have started this thread.
I can recognize themmAngu but I can't say why this is themmAngu or this is not themmAngu. Is there a specific grammar for themmAngu songs ? I discovered the world of themmAngu by accident and then there was no going back.
kAvadi chindhu is mostly absent from TFM (Film). There is one kAvadi chindhu in veera pAndiya katta bomman that I know. KC is basically the same tune there seems to be no difference. I heard an album of kAvadi chindhus by carnatic singer Sowmya and all the songs were in the same tune (aNNAmalai reddiyAr songs). Is kAvadi chindhu a tune or is it a chandham ?
bhArathi marks a few of his songs as noNdi chindhu varNa mettu - any details of this ? Is this used in TFM ?
Any details on T Folk M welcome.

Gummi is another popular folk form. The most famous example is of course
Gummiadi Thamizh Naadu Muzhuvadhum Kulungida Kai Katti Gummiadi
I hv no idea whether this song is part of TFM or not.

Sindhu:
I am not sure whether songs like "Naanoru Sindhu" correspond to the Sindhu format. I personally think that they dont.
I always thought songs like
"Andhi Saayura Neram
Mandharach Chedi Oram
Oru Ammavai Paatthu Ayya Adicchaaraam Kannu
Ava Siricchaalaam Ponnu"
as a Sindhu. Strictly speaking, this doesnt correspond to Annamalai Reddiars songs. Same problem as you. I dont exactly know what a Sindhu is.
Nenjil Uramumindri is supposed to a be a Nondich Chindhu, I think.

How about kuRavanji style? Is that strictly thamizh folk? Do we have any in TFM?

Is kummi not a dance form rather than a music form ?
kuRavanchi is folk I think. I am not sure whether anybody has used it in TFM. It has been used in bharathanatyam.
