Making waves - Meet Pravin Mani, the man behind the lilting score of "Little John"
LITTLE JOHN, the Jyothika and Bentley starrer, received rave reviews for its refreshing background score and the numbers - Lady don't, Baila le Hoila and Laila Laila. Music director Pravin Mani was widely appreciated for introducing these fresh notes. Mani is one of the promising young breed of music directors from the South . He has worked on the background score for super duper flicks such as Alaipayuthe and Alibaba and 40 Thieves, a Pentamedia film that went for the Oscars, as well as for hits such as Shakalaka Baby and Jhumbala. When not working on scores he has tried his hand at crooning and has been rather good— the number O humdum suniyo re that he sang with KK, Shaan and Kunaal for Saathiya was a runaway hit.
With a great deal of achievements in his kitty in a very short time, it has been not exactly a long journey for himsince he started working with A.R. Rahman in 1998 "He has been a major influence. Working with him is an experience. He is an amazing person, an enigma, an epitome of music inventing new sounds, which accounts for his music that has a global feel to it. According to a study, he is considered the highest selling artiste in the world and that his albums sale equals those of Britney Spears and Madonna put together," informs Pravin Mani, who was on a visit to the twin cities recently.
Currently based in Toronto, Pravin has been doing a lot of background scores such as for Deepa Mehta's Bollywood Hollywood as well as for Hollywood films. Some of his recent films as a music director have been Son of Alladin and Ottran (starring Arjun and Simran). "Presently one of the movies that I have been working on that has inspired me a lot has been Dancer, based on the real life of a handicapped man who loses a leg and has a never say die attitude in life," he says.
About his foray into Telugu film industry. "Why not. Incidentally, Dancer is being made in Tamil and Telugu," he says.
Apart from background scores he is also working on albums. "I am also working with a band VIP (Voices in Public) on a hybrid album adding the tabla and other Indian sounds," he says. A jazz pro who is equally enthused by Carnatic music, his compositions range from jazz mixes to extended club and ambient forms that have a dance feel about them.
On the influences that go into making of his music, he says, "music arrangement and growth of technology, art and science." These factors are reflected in the new age feel good rhythm that he brings. Here's looking to hear more from him.
