KJY is much more than a Bhajan singer but I dont find much romance in his singing the way I find in SPB's singing .For that matter I find Jatachandran much more romantic.

Romance may mean different things to different people:-) However, talking of mischief /laughter etc, I'm not able to differentiate KJY with JC much , both are not SPB or TMS. But is that all romance is about?

Change the topic of the thread to 'KJY not the best choice for romantic numbers'. Most of the posters have listed good composition/songs as a whole, but IMO, KJY's contribution does not spoil the songs..period!!! 'Kannan oru..' song has not been sung well at all by KJY (esp. in comparison with PS) and all brighas end in spurts with no clarity/sense of completeness at all. All the songs listed have made their way into our psyches primarily because of the quality of the compositions . His expressions are not adequate in any of the songs listed. It's just not a question of giggling/laughing ,it calls for a perpetual romaticist/youngster at heart to render cine romantic numbers.

yes. true SL. PS contribution to "Kannan oru.." song is really good. KJY didn't do that much. That is why that song is always refered as PS song.

Not only in Kannan oru kai kuzhalandhai in the following mentioned songs P Suseela had relly given KJY a run for his money. She easily dominated in these songs with a weak duet singer in KJY
Songs..........
Ennaparvai undhan parvai
Thanga thoneyele
Vizhiye kadhai eluthu
Kanni raasi unraasi
Neelanayanangalil
Chellapillai saravanan....etc...etc.

PAR:
It is baseless to just generalise all KJY (or any other artist) romantic duets are bad. If you want to impose ur opinion on all of the DFrs, sorry I am not the one who is going to accept this.
First of all it is bad taste to comment "ohhh ...
keralites worship...". What is your problem if they worship KJY? Do you know how many excellent duets he sang in MFM. (since unwarrently u referred MFM here, I am bound to drag MFM here
too.). Instead of substantiating your claim, you commented on Keralite's taste.
There will always be problems if you try to generalise your opinion whether it is on music , culture or on anything.
Moreover all these romantic feeling, youthfulness
etc., are purely subjective. I have few friends who feels that most of the time SPB over improvise and spoils the song. I do not buy it either because they could not substantiate their claim .
For one person a particular violin piece is T.R.Papa style, the same piece is ultimate for somebody else, and to me it is in the quality of How to name it.
If ur view need to be given respect first try to at least realise other's (in this case Keralites)
point of view before ridiculing. (I do not expect you to respect other's views)
Again you may feel that you haven't ridiculed by writing 'oohh.....', but I felt as ridiculing.
You know bottom line is "everything is subjective".
Disclaimer:
I dont worship KJY.

I don't agree with the stance of SL and GR with regard to the rendition of "Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhandhai" by KJY. GR, that song is always referred to as a great song by IR, PS and KJY and not just PS alone. IR himself has told in an interview during those times that he was mesmerized by the singers' rendition in that song. SL, IMO, One can call a 'briga' to be incomplete only if the singer skips a beat without continuing with the briga (and maintaining a bit of silence therein) until that beat. But, I don't find anything like this in KJY's rendition in that song. I have heard so many people praising both for that song equally well. The lines that go like "Ezh pirappum iNaindhirukkum sondham indha sondhamamma... vazhvirukkum naaL..." by KJY render my heart because they are so imbued with emotion. I have infact heard many people mention these very same lines and praise KJY in particular. I feel, if brigas had taken precedence in this lovely romantic melody, it would not have made it to our hearts. Sometimes, plain rendition is required to make a punch instead of "briga" style rendition. And this song is a typical IR number without any room for improvisation. The reason it has stood its time is because of the beautiful rendition by both the singers and ofcourse, the simplistic melodious tune. I remember Gangai Amaran stating that the tune of the song was lifted from one of those native "nattuppurap paadal", which IR grew up listening to.
But, there is a song which will suit SL's description aptly: "EriyilE oru kashmir roja" - this is a song (a duet by PS & KJY) with scope for lot of improvisation. But, one can't resist feeling in favour of PS' rendition of the song - particularly her improvisations - inspite of the long sustaining brigas by KJY.

Par, if I were you, I will not include "Enna Paarvai" in the lot because KJY was a novice singer in those days and his voice was naive in that song.
As for "thangath thOniyilE", "vizhiyE kadhai ezhudhu" and "neela nayanangaLil" even though PS voice is dominating, KJY's plus in these songs is his great mellufluous voice itself and these songs are great hits in all sense - tune, interludes and rendition!
"kanni raasi en raasi" is a number where both their voices are ebbing with youthfulness "...rishaba kaaLai raasi en raaseee" - indha oru line pOdhumE, KJY-kku credit kodukka! I feel you are very much biased against KJY to rob him of his due credit, no doubt about it!
I am sorry, I vote in favour of KJY in "chella piLLai saravanan" because PS' rendition in this song is surprisingly very mechanical (KJY-like?) as opposed to KJY's enthusiasm!
Please note that my discussion is on a song to song basis trying to express my views on the songs quoted.

karthi, the point is his brighas were not clear enough and did not describe the melody fully , that's all. That portion was not meant to be plain. I too remember, Gangai Amaran talking about this song's source. Another song he quoted was 'ThooLiyilE aada vantha' which actually Paavalar's composition.

Karthi and others,
I am not agaist KJY. Iwant to convey that he was very mechanical and monotanous in romantic duets
Even there is one solo which he had spoilt.
Vecha Paarvai theeradhadee Machan kuree Maradhadee
Film ILAMAIKOLAM . Music IR. This song was a big hit because of the tune .In this song the singer was expected to pronounce tamil SLANG, and expected to show lot of GELI and Kurumbu with maximum teasing while singing. ALAS!!!KJY WAS totally Flat in this number. Also Karthi P.S IS far better than KJY in the following songs which you have toagree.
Kadhal ENbadhu Kaviyum aanaal(MSV)
PaadaVandhdho Raagaam Paavaai Kannile Nannam(IR...Ilamai Kalangal)
Please do not give any Sappakkattu to praiseKJY.

Well,is there any specific definition how a romantic song should be? People have appreciated
diffrent type of romantic songs-from "Sundari Niyyum Sundaran njanum" sung by Kamalahasan to
"Kathalikka Neramillay kathalippanalumillay" from
Sirkazhi Govindarajan

Though I dont have much experience, Romance (atleast in movies) are different kinds.
Some are gentle, some are not. Some suits KYJ and some suits SPB.
sunder and clones expect it to be in thier own way, and we are wasting time on thier thread.

I dont know why KJY is not used much in telugu film music. He was always limited to songs which are either sad solo songs or classical (karnatic) songs. It was an impression created that if any sad song, it is KJY. He is definetely better in those areas.
Regarding romantic songs, fast numbers, may be people had the same impression as Parvathi which is not true. He has done some good romantic songs for mohanbabu. But industry's preference was always SPB.
