Classical Singer Sudha Raghunathan

Sudha inherited an interest in music from her mother Smt Choodamani. She started formal training from Smt. Choodamani right from the age of nine. She later learnt from Sri. T. V Viswanathan and studied from Sri. B.V. Lakshman for a brief period.

Sudha came under the tutelage of the illustrious Padmabhushan, Sangeetha Kalanidhi, Dr. M.L Vasantha Kumari in 1977, when she won a Govt. of India Scholarship given to young artistes for advanced training in music. It was only with Dr. M.L. V's encouragement that Sudha pursued music as a career. Sudha had the golden opportunity of providing vocal support to Dr. MLV for a decade. She is considered as Dr. M.L.V's "vaarisu" by all music lovers.

Sudha considers learning to be a life long process and strives to improve her knowledge and repertoire. She is a quick learner and is research oriented which is very evident in her lecture-demonstrations, very popular among her fans.

Sudha has performed concerts in all the major cities in India. Besides, she has undertaken concert tours all over the world at the invitation of prestigious institutions abroad. She is regarded highly by other reputed musicians from the Carnatic and the Hindustani music circles.

Sudha is a Top Ranking artiste of the All India Radio, Chennai and performs regularly on AIR and Doordharshan. She has also performed on various other TV networks.For the Radio Sangeeth Sammelan series of concerts conducted by the AIR,Sudha performed at Hassan,Karnataka on October 10,1992.

Sudha has to her credit commercial cassettes and compact discs of Classical and Devotional music released by many leading recording companies .The banners include, Amutham Inc.(New York);AVM Audio; MusicToday;Vani Recording Co.;HMV; INRECO;T-Series;Geethanjali, Amutham Music Pvt Ltd. chennai.etc.

Academically,Sudha is a Post Graduate in Economics,and has the distinction of being awarded the Most Outstanding Student of the Ethiraj College,Madras for three years in sucession .Besides music,Sudha has at college level acclaimed credit in other fields such as debates,quiz,dramatics and essay writing. She was treasurer and later the Vice President of the Students Union and won the service to college prestigious medal.

  In all of the above, Sudha's fantastic breath control and expressive power are brought to the fore. One falls miserably short of words to describe the complex gamakaas that she innovatively introduces at several hundred places throughout the composition, and with what felicity!. The flexibility and fluidity of her vocals are superbly brought to fore especially in the "thaaye yashoda" piece in Thodi raagam.
  
  Her performance in "kannan nee isai naadha oviyum" in Ilayaraaja's Ivann is a mere reconfirmation her superlative talents. Her starting alaap and the several embellishments to the composition she has added are a miracle to be heard (and over and over again!).

  Mythila, dunno how many tfmdf visitors are from Chennai. Vikadan carried out some reviews, Sanjay Sub's was there, dont remember about Sudha.
  I nearly got the rare luck of attending KJY and SPB(light) live on back-to-back days. But leave got cancelled at the last moment :-((
  
  I think you will definitely get Music Season reviews from carnatica.com/sangeetham.com. chennaionline.com used to have the schedules with

  I have been listening to "Natam Adinar" rendered by Sudha Raghunathan for the past 2 hours. I can go on and on infinitely. I just love her slightly rough voice. She exhibits stunning flexibility in transitions. To add to this are some wonderful tarana recitations. Wonderful!

  I am Aravind, agreat fan of Sudha Ragunathan.. to very frankly say, she is my 'Manasika Guru'. I am an upcoming vocal artiste from India. I am presently working at TELCO Lucknow and am performing in nearly 7 leading sabhas during December, this year.I ahve been watching Sudha Ragunathan from day one, I have been introduced to her.I can say that there is a lot to learnand i ahve stydied her so muchj that i cna easily guess what will be her next move in any kutcheri and can easliy tell the song which she will be singing, given a raga.

  Please listen to the Ragam Thanam Pallavi of Sudha Ragunathan specially the ones set to Kanda jaathi triputa thaalam and kanda nadai. Sudha has a penchant to prathimadhyama ragas. Her delination of shanmugapriya is amazing...I mean i have no words...Please listen to Sudha's RTPs in Music Aademy Cassetes Volumes 1992,1993,1994 Shamugapriya, Vaachaspathi and Naataikuranji excellent
  Like MLV, she also sings many pallavis in Naatai Kuranji.. I have attended so many concerts when i was young and i also ahve all cassetes she has released which are relevant to me

  You know, she is very clever in releasing new songs to the public. She chooses songs very nicely and her list is always amazing.. I also list songs for my concerts in consonance with hers...
  Every season she chooses to release 2 songs or 3 max .. in rare ragas.Say Raka sashivadan, Enthanivina, Mudu momu, sudha maadurya, Sree chakraraja etc... the list goes on
