I've Been in and out of this website for quite sometime now. I see a lot of discussion about MDs, few/no threads about lyricists.
I wanna find the cosensus about what people who the best lyricist is. I feel Vairamuthu is best one around. He may be egoistic, but his lyrics stand out of the crowd.
In an album having 3-4 lyricists, I feel his lyrics are awesome.

Vairam is the best there has been for the past 20 years. But of the new kids on the blocks listen to Thamarai. She has got depth, meaning in her words and seems to be a mix of Vairam and Kannadasan. Let us hope she lasts because she doesnot use English words in her songs.
Vaasan is no longer with us......Of the others Muthukumar is okay. The rest are gap-fillers.....

Number of people who have more integrity, substance, and style over today's Vairamuthu (the caveat is that pre-ARR Vairamuthu had all these attributes):
-arivumathi
-thamarai
-mu.metha
-muthulingam
-na.kamarasan
-pulamaipithan
-kuruvikarambai shanmugam
-panju arunachalam
-gangai amaran
-t.rajendar
-r.v.udhayakumar
-pazhani barathi (not all the time)
-kapilan

Thamarai is fabulous. Best of the new lot. Just listen to her new album 'kaakka, kaakka'. Just like the old Vairamuthu. New words, new depth to emotions. 'Uyirin Uyire' and Vondra renda are great songs. I am looking out for her. She doesnot use English words. Good for her, but I think she has to prove herself in the rural oriented subjects to take on Vairamuthu's mantle in the long run. Speaking of which none of the new breed (can't call Arivumathi new breed) can or have written on rural themes....
Muthukumar had a good song in 'Run'. I feel he has scope. Needs to be consistent.
P. Vijay, well, he writes to the situation. No real depth but I don't think he cares. He has given some really down in the dump songs and still survives because his songs have become temporary hits.
Kabilan started off well, with his 'vun samaiyal araiyil' and there was also a good song in a Prabhu Deva starrer, lines about 'kaasu'. He also has scope.....
Snegan, well, he can write songs like 'kalyanthaan kattikittu' but to become a good lyricist, he has to write good lines, not nonsense rhymes....
Vivega has to prove himself......
of the old breed,
Arivumadhi is good but I don't think he gets enough opportunities.
Pazhani Bharathi has the stuff, but he too writes to the director's expectations and that at times reflects badly on his works.....

Pulamaipithan is the BEST we have today. Sadly he doesn't get to write much in TFM these days.
He made his debut with MGR's "Kudiyirundha Kovil" with the song, "nAn yAr nAn yAr nee yAr, nAlum therindhavar yAr yAr" and went on to write some extremely popular songs like "Ayiram Nilave vA" and typical MGR-signarure songs like "Odi Odi UzhaikkaNum", "Sirithu vAzha vENdum" and .
One of my all-time Vani Jayaram favorites, "Gangai Nadhi Oram rAman nadandAn" is penned by Pulamai Pithan. So is "Amudhe Tamizhe" from "Kovil puRA" (IR).
He wrote some classics for IR-Kamal combo such as Nayakan's "Then pANdi cheemayile" and UnnAl Mudiyum Tambi's "Idhazhil Kadhai Ezhudum" and all the songs in Balachander's 'Azhagan'. Remember "SAthi malli poocharamE", "Mazhayum NeeyE, Veyilum NeeyE" and "Sangeetha SwarangaL"?
Of his recent songs, how can one forget the classic 'Edhilum Ingu iruppaan avan yaaro' from 'Bharathi', set to classical Tamizh, with some amazing, meaningful word-play?
Thankfully, in spite of the Pazhani Bharathis and others, IR continues to give him some opportunities in films like KAsi, ILayavan etc. Even Yuvan's Nandha had an excellent song with amazing lyrics by PulamaiPithan, "OrAyiram YAnai kondrAl BaraNi".
Today's so-called 'kavignars' have a lot to learn from this master lyricist.

The best lyricist around is still Vairamuthu. Vaali stopped writing sense, a long long time again. Other old writers are stuck with Ilayaraja who, I am afraid doesnot encourage lyricists to write their best lines( which is why Vairamuthu left him). The second best presently would be Thamarai. Third would be Muthukumar and there ends the list.....

There are a few good lyricists. Apart from Vairamuthu, the greatest after Kannadasan, there are the olden goldies like Vaali, who still writes for the young (sometimes indulging in nursery rhymes), Pulamaipithan, Kaamakodiyan et all are still writing for Ilayaraja. Pazhani Bharathi is still around giving good lyrics as in "mun paniyaa, mudhal mazhaiyaa'. Then of the young breed there is Thamarai, Muthukumar and Kabilan, who are all very good.
