Does any IR fan have experiences similar to mine where you hated a song (for whatever reason) and forwarded it each time without listening properly, but then grew to love it later on? I thought it would be interesting to discuss that. There are 2 songs that I can start off with:
1. kadhal enna kathal enna kathirikaya from Sethu. I never got past the first line because of the starting lyrics, but one day by chance I listened to the whole song and realized that it was not bad. After multiple listenings I grew to love that song.
2. eduthuvittaen thoduthuvittaen enga ooru themmangu from periya veetu pannakaaran. It starts with a brief introduction to each instrument. Someone plays the thavil and then says "ithu thanjavuru thavilu". Someone else plays the urumi and then says "ithu namma madurai urumi". I never got past this because I thought it was a useless "pattikaatu" song. Again by chance I listened to it fully and started liking it, and now I absolutely love this song. The bonus is the lyrics: nikkathaiya en paatu, un paatathan nippaatu, ikkaalamum ekkaalamum ithukku irukku supportu... Always makes me smile when I hear this.. :)

The song " Vandhadhu Vandhadhu " form Kili Petchu Ketka Vaa.
What a song! How can this composer bring in a tune that so beautifully captures the mood of a young woman in love!
I did not like this song at all when I saw the movie.Infact, i recorded all other songs from this movie , excepting this one.
Today, I started my day after listening to this song thrice.
What a lovely way to start a fresh day on mother earth!

WhyNot, you're off the track. Your answer doesn't belong in this thread.
Yes, I have one song. 'Oru Thanga Radhathil' from Dharma Udhdham. I never liked this song all these years because I always switched off the radio when this song came up! Recently, when speaking with a friend, she said that she liked this song better than Aagaaya Gangai! That came as a surprise to me. So, I actually listened to this song which was in one of the HMV cassettes - and you know what, I really like it!

with CD's it's easier to skip tracks without having to listen to the whole song .
I totally dismissed "damakku damakku dum" and "oru sundhari vanthaalam" from Azhagi,
never got passed a few secs.however last week, the tracks played on and after listening to the both song completly I've fallen for it.
I've only started to listen to Ilaiyaraja's
previous numbers from the 90's now, I missed out on hearing all his songs and chose not.
I'm listening to all his music now and it's like as if I'm listening to some fresh, new works.such songs of IR that I've absolutely hated but then ended up loving
a 90's number
* aadi varthum mayila (Raajkumaran)
great gyspie feel, nice syncopation and very rhythmaic string section.so much intricate detail and perfection in a song,I dunno why I didn't liked it in the first place.

K, I was registering a nil response. I was simply stating tat there were no IR songs that I absolutely hated at first but loved later.
It was my humble way of 'contributing'. *sheepish grin*

OrampO OrampO from PoNNu Ooruku Pudhusu. I heard it once and did not like anything about the song. But after watching the song and later listening to it keenly I liked everything about the song and would rate it as the 2nd best kooththu pAttu. It brings out the innocent rustic feel of the playful ooru pOkkiri pasanga very well. When the old woman curses them for dashing her with their bicycle, instead of apologizing they actually scold her...thou I feel sorry for the old woman, it brings a smile:)
An innocent rustic song that many smart dfers here have referred to, to express their own desires. A perfect case of seeing ghosts when there are none:-)

I haven't paid much attention to Sendhoorapoove initially but recently I had that in one of the CD's. What a perfect song!!.

tigger, many songs come to my mind. The recent flicks are "Aandaan adimai" songs, except "Unthan raajiyatthil". But after hearing for 2 or 3 times, i started liking all the songs!!! Same way, the songs in "Kanna unai thaedukiraen". WOW!! What a lovely songs!!!
In old songs, initially i didn't like "Raaku muthu raaku" from ejaman! After i had seen the movie, i thought that's a perfect song!!! Same is applicable to "maadatthilae kanni maadatthilae" from Veera!! ( even now, i hate the "vaadi vetthalai paaku" from that movie, that's an entirely diff story!!)
While hearing to "Karuvelampookal", my initial impression was "OK", esp for the songs "kaalaiyilae kan muzhichu" and "Aelae ennaalae" But after hearing them some couple of times, it really amazed me!!!
see u later....

Saran,
Actually the way you describe it you were just not impressed by the songs and then later on started liking them. I too can give numerous examples in that category. I am talking about songs that you really disliked, then started to like...
another example in Senthoorapoove would be the song that starts 'varapey thalakani, vaikaalu panju methai...' It is sung in a very gruff voice and I didn't like it at all. Later I realized that is very nice. The song beautifully expresses the fact that even people who work in the fields have a life, they live, make love, smile in the face of adversity etc.

Tigger,
My experience with IR's songs is that I was careless with the song when I listened to it the first time. A careful listening to it showed that I really liked the song - this is the case with most of the songs...
My recent discovery: Dhindukallu.. from Raasaiya.

Two songs:
1. Adi Rakku Muthu Rakku
2. Ka Ka Kaa Ki Ki Ku Ku Key Key Key Key Pudhu Katcheri
what brilliance in the tunes!
Today, I am scrounging for all songs of IR that I neglected.
I am learning that to begin to understand what music is all about is to keep listening more and more and then finally you get the science behind the art of composing. because of that knowledge, my awe of IR' genius is only growing not diminishing as some fellas say 'grown out of that'. impossible, saar

Aiyyo!! I can't believe I haven't already made my contribution to this thread!! There are surely some IR songs I hated at first, but grew on me the more I listened. Some of them are:
Nirpathuve in Bharathi
Eeramaana Rojaave in Ilamai Kalangal
Samayal Paadume in Manipoor Maamiyaar
Potri Paadade Ponne in Devar Magan
Un Pakkathile in Senthooram (I would actually consider this song the best in the album, which IMHO was pretty bland)
En Vaazhvile and Kalyana Mela in Thambikku Entha Ooru (I was too enraptured in Aasai Kiliye... from the same film to give two hoots about these songs)
Ooraa Therinjikkitten in Padikkathavan
Alli Sundaravalli in Kangalin Vaarthaigal (When people said that this song was the best in the film, I thought they were wack!)
Phew, i give up here. I could be at this all night.... :-)
regards,
purv
