hi folks. no, this thread is not about puratchi kavignar's contribution to TFM (though i would love to discuss his songs in a separate thread). people might find this a bit fuzzy, but anyway, here I go.
just as the finer nuances of various genres of music are seen in TFM, which make for terrific discussion, the various subtleties of the great tamil tongue and its literature are also seen.
for eg: there is a particular literary form in tamil (equivalent of oxymoron in english) where the poet/writer expresses the lack of something through impossibilities, metaphorically. kannadhaasan handled it in the Junior song in avargal (udayathai kaana merrku nokki yaengukiraai), TR wrote an entire song in oru thalai raagam (ithu kuzhandhai paadum thaalattu). think vaali-yum athai kaiyaanduLLar, in unnai ninaichchen paattu padichchen (kottum mazhaikkaalam maavui virkkkapponen). pundits should be able to tell me what this particular technique is.
another is silaedai (equivalent of punning). correct me if i am wrong, but the athikkai song from Bhale Pandiya should qualify under this.
fantasy is another technique that VM has excelled in (putham puthu bhoomi vaendum).
if things are clear till now, shall we discuss such literary form usages in TFM? pundits, pls try and be lucid. illenna, naan jagaa vaangikkuvaen.

i knew u would send such a response. man, am i a mind-reader. in fact, just after posting this thread, i scanned the archives and found the thread u are referring to. absloutely mind-blowing discussion. manisegaranukkum kanchanavukkum naan theeraadha kadan pattirukkiren.
but that thread largely dwelt on the efforts of film lyricists in bringing literature in a simplified form to the common man.
what i am trying to initiate here is the usage of `literary techniques' as opposed to literature. i am sure there is a difference.
in fact, in that thread, one of the techniques discussed is "thoodhu", which is quite common in thamizh ilakkiyam. we see its usage in "ennuyirththozhi", the song of the century. in a way, this thread is an offshoot (by default) of that one.
let's try and fish out more such instances and bask in the glory that is the thamizh language.

Cram, you may also want to check out the thread,"Pudhumayana Vaarthaigal Prayogangal" from the archives. In there is some discussion of clever, unique, creative use of words and expressions.

A long time ago when Vairamuthu was asked if Thamizh grammar ever proved useful in TFM song composition, he insisted that it certainly factors in when the sandham has a very flat or tight raNGE. As an example he gave the song from the movie, "Ram Lakshman".
IR gave him the sandham for the pallavi as:
thAnanana thAnA thAnanana thAnA
For that VM thought in terms of:
kUviLangAi thEmA kUviLangAi thEmA
the result was:
vAlibamae vA vA thEnisayE thA thA
I thought that was pretty resourceful of VM.
