Deva has proved himself to be a success in imitation. that is too general a statement. let us list his various songs and their originals in whatever language they may be.

A song in Asai - meenamma - is inspired from 'Home by the Sea' song in the album Genesis by Genesis. (This album is a GREAT rock album).

no, the song he copied from genesis was 'mama'.the interludes in 'meenamma' are a direct lift from
the song 'mama'.the song was still good because the original is too good. in the same film 'thilothamma' was copied from ofra haza.deva is the only MD to create an album of hits all of which are flicks.hats off to deva!

Deva uses traces of the opening chorus from one of the tunes from "The Lion King" soundtrack and right after the chorus, he goes to the thundering rhythms from the Michael Jackson song which begins, "Can you hear me". But then, coursing through the rhythm is a nice keyboard interlude which launches the song, "En Manadhai Kollaiyadithavalae" which I read somewhere is based on a classic Carnatic ragam. Now, I agree with most that the splicing is not as smooth as IR's or ARR's songs, but "En Manathai Kollaiyadithavalae" is a damn nice pop song. It is not a keerthanai, not a sacred melody. I think Deva has owned up to his copying, so what's the problem here? I agree with aruLarasan that Minamma is a lot better than MAMA. Genesis has made some great tunes including "That's All" from the same album as MAMA, but I didn't care for the song MAMA.

Udaya,
please tell me the song, "En Manadhai Kollaiyadithavalae" from which film. Just to listen that's all. And for deva's inspiration list add L subramaniam whose violin piece from "superinstinct" was lifted as an 'inspiration' for the song 'manamvirumbute' from nerkkuner.

Indian, I believe the movie, "Kalloori Vaasal" has the song "En Manathai Kollaiyadithavalae".

Indian,
By the way En Manathai from Kallori Vasal is a lift from "Will you be there" a song by MJ from the movie Free Willy.

Deva sure is a man of many inspirations. In 'Manam Virumbuthey' he has lifted the percussion bit from the title music of "Surabhi" a popular cultural show on Doordarshan.
BobMarley, Genesis, ARR yes. But a title music from a TV show ? Who'd ever have thought of that ??
Kudos to Deva ! Photocopying business' loss is TFM's gain !

The starting music(violin chorus) of the song annAmala annAmala from the film annAmalai is one other lift of deva from a symphony by beeth'n or moz't(i dont' remember).
Also the rhythm(or beat) for the song malligaye! malligaye! from the film ninaithEn vandhAi is of the song Ek ladki kO dhEkA thO from the hindi film 1942 ALS(MD:RDB).

another feather in deva's cap! refer to latest kumudham review of sandosham.it seems deva had directly lifted paul young's 'every time u go away' and had used it in his BGM for the movie sandosham.
earlier AR rahman had used paul young's beat loops from the song 'love of common people' in 2 of his songs, 'malargale' in lovebirds and 'akkadaanu' in indian.anyway iam happy that 2 of the greatest works of paul have been 'honoured' by our MD's.

Haris,
The song "Malligaye Malligaye" from Ninaithen Vandhai is a direct lift from the telugu version of the movie ("Pelli Sandadi"); Music by Keeravani.
BTW the song is almost a complete lift (the first line of the tune was modified.., including the beats (which in turn were "influenced" by Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To :-))
"Pelli Sandadi" had some very good songs and
the movie itself was a huge hit..
The hindi version of the movie "Mere Sapnon Ki Rani" bombed badly though..

Pls listen and enjoy Deva SArs songs rather than investigating where he has copied it.
I believe we should criticise but not condem his efforts. Take as enjoying a english/telugu/malayalam songs in a tamil version by Deva.
However I still not much happy about the direct lifts by him ex AKILA AKILA (Buffalo Soldier). Illayaraja said that noone can produce a new out of the world songs since all of them lies in SA...................NI. So let Deva SAr keep trying.
He has also given plenty good GANA songs.I believe alot of us love his GANAS.
LET HIM GIVE MORE OF THIS COPY CATs AS FAR AS ITS DONE IN GOOD TAMIL.

Deva's latest flick Priyamudam has a song which is a straight lift of Chandni O chandni from chandni.
This song is in the TOP ten of India Direct. He is a living proof of the saying Make hay while the sun shines. Just copy songs and make money.

I'm listening to ninaithEn vandhai and all the songs are good. Most of them
remind me of some old song (my memory fails me) but these songs are good enough
to prevent me from distracting.
There is one song which starts with sAmja vara gamanA and then he gives his
own interpretation of hindhOLam. dhEvA, keep it up.

You see..Deva copied exactly in HehHeh Kichi Kilihey in MUGAVARI. But our young talent YSR put in some effort and genius (& melody too!) in his latest RISHI. Listen to 'Vaa Vaa' by Hariharan/S.Janaki. The very first part of the song. And compare with the Pallavi tune in 'HehHeh Kichi Kilihey'. Thats Raajas talent. Accept it yaar.

For all the flak Deva gets here, I think he is not that bad. He seems to be a talented guy and enjoys his work. I dont condone plagiarisation but you can tell certain copying was done very well (Rod Stewart song, Vivaldi etc). The melodies also flow smoothly. If he trusts his talents well and works hard he can do very well.
I only wish all MDs in TFM had almost comparable recording styles. This would remove another variable between various MDs works.
In Deva's recording, one can tell the sequencers and real instruments. Also, he seems to use the same kind of reverb for the vocals all the time, so the vocals and instruments do not mix very well.
I hope the new sound engineering schools produce good graduates. There also seems to be good business opportunities in India for sound/recording equipment dealerships.
