We can figure this in his latest songs.
eg.,
1. Mennuda Ennai Thinnuda - Indian
2. Enakkana Perundheeni I like you - Citizen
3. Uyirodu ennai nee thinnada - Citizen
4. Thinnadhe Thinnadhe - Parthen Rasithen

good observation :-) It concurs with my opinion that he is a bit sadistic in his metaphors, similies and imagination too :-)
examples:
poopparikka kOdari edharku
pookaLai kiLLuvadhaal raththam varumaa

MS, what's sadistic abt 'poopparikka kOdari edharku ' ? but i do agree with the other examples, and agree that VM is sometimes sadistic and violent in his imagination. (thinnathe was the most disgusting lyrics i have ever heard)
another example : 'pagaivanai veTTith thalai koNdu nadaiyedu padaiyappA' ! What a horrible glorification of violence !

eden,
Yes, aruvaamanai stuff is by Vairamuthu.
One more latest example for his violent imagination is 'Dupattaavil ennaik kattith thukkil podaathee'., (Majnu)
Earlier examples - 'Vaanavillai naan kaettaal aNNankaL udaiththuth tharuvaarkaL' (Jodi), 'Pooppoolee iruntha manathindRu moongil pol vedikkuthadi sagiyee' (Nerukku ner) and many more. I am really sick with such approach towards something as soft as love.
Pozhdhu pogathavan,
'Mennuda ennaith thinnuda' is by Vaali (Maaya Macheendra)

that line "pagaivanai vetti thalai kondu nadayidu padayappa "is lifted from thiruppugazh (the first song of arunagairinathar that starts off as "muthaitharu pathi thirunagai...")
the line goes as
"...kotputrezhu natpattravunarai
vetti baliyittukulagiri
...."
actually the songs tune is also lifted from thiruppugazh only...
as far as vm is concerned...sadistic views he does write but why do they become popular....i think some thiings are hidden in most of us that we are afraid/ conciously or unconciously restrain ourselves from writing, practising or doing ....that is most probably why such songs do become popular...

Well, VM is a good lyricist no doubt about that, but of late, he has been trying to show off too much in his lyric, thereby making it irrelevant, meaningless and at times, disgusting..
An example in "Thom karuvil irundhom" (Star), he says
"Dhraatshai rasam kudithavan buthi saaliyaa ?
Pazha rasam kudithavan kutra vaaliyaa ?"
Yo.. idhukku ennayya artham ? Summa kaiyila ezhudhu kol irundhaa kandadhum ezhudha koodaadhu.
Needless to say, VM also tries to project (in interviews) that he is writing something useful to the society and doing some "puratchis" (like what he spoke during the making of Citizen programme. Aanaal, Citizen varigalil minjiyadhu verum emaatram dhaan).
Such people who pretend to be "puratchi" kavignars and later end up writing some non-sense, should not be encouraged. They should be thrown out.
Inspite of all this, I maintain that VM is a
"talented" lyricist.

If a guy like VM could write great songs before and just writing junk now there may be two reasons
He is out of his talent, he is out of imagination any more etc.,
Or
He is just fitting some words to match the tune.
He is showing some spark now and then, so it is not true that he is completely ran out of stuff.
I think the other one might me the reason. Not for sure.
May be he is getting some odd /tough tune that he is not able to fit some words which convey good meaning , Also he has to write easy words that singers should be able to pronounce. With so many limitations, how can you expect somebody to write great lyrics all the time?
I guess he is showing his resent by putting something which really doesnt mean anything. Just my opinion.
Also the way the singers killing the words, does it really make any sense writing some great stuff?

My feeling is that VM is a very crafty (the craft of writing lyrics) lyricist...if he has had a renewed innings after the arrival of ARR..it means only this..he has been able to adapt to the changes of the times..we may find "thinnadhe" and "aruvamanai" violent but isn't this the general trend of lyrics everywhere in the world...the "thinnadhe" words in that song..aptly potrayed the situation of the song....where the Prashant character is being troubled with the possessive Simran character....
"Aruvamanai" and "Arukkiriye" goes aptly with the Raakshashiye character being potrayed in the song and there is also a neat alliteration in the words.
So my feeling is that VM is a very clever lyricist maintaining modernity in today's fast changing world.
