We have all seen that most of the hit songs come from big director's films like; Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Rajiv Menon, Fazil (Malayalam), Rajkumar Santoshi (Hindi), Vasanth, K Balachander, Krishna Vamshi (Telugu), Charan, Kathir, Suresh Krissna, Priyadarshan and others. I do agree that even debutant directors manage to churn out some hummable and good tunes from their music directors for their films like; Gautam Menon (Minnale), Aamir (Mounam Paesiyathey), Bala (Sethu), Santosh (Manasellam), Susi Ganesan (5 Star), Azhagam Perumal (Dum Dum Dum) and many more. The audience applaud the singers and the music directors for a successful hit song, that is quite justified, I agree. But, how much share can we credit the film's director who inspires the music director, to give good music for that particular situation or the script? He is the one who gets the concept for a song in a particular situation.
People, who have an idea post response to this thread please?

In addition to that the film director should be demanding enough to get the best tune for the required situation. For that he/she should have good listening skill to find out suitable tune out of many presented by MD for the given situation.

Directors can do two things a) Demand excellent tunes, unfortunately this is a too much call, not all directors can do this. Some directors who can demand such things are BM, Kamal, RVU. b) Certainly directors can do is to picturize the songs very well. A beautiful eg K.Subash shatriyan. IR all time great Malayil yaaro. This is one perfect song in many ways, great song (IRs spontaneous song) , lyric, wonderful picturisation, see its a mild melody, camera movement also slow and smooth most of the places in curves bring the beauty of Boats & Beach and Banu (Classic in a yellow saree). Incidently there is another good song Pootukkal pottalum (though lyrics are bad, it is one of the very good song with nice interludes. A good candidate for Chords section).
