I guess this is the only film, IR did not use SPB, stunning isnt it!!!
The trend setter sets the trend!
Agni Nakshatiram (1988) was the MTVisation of Indian film music long before MTV made its inroads into this country! The song sequences are still regarded one of the best in Indian cinema. It was all the way a cult movie. Agni Nakshatiram was a very suave potboiler, without the melodramatic trappings. A tale of a man and his two wives, and their respective sons, and of course how they cope up with each other. Though the story was no great shakes, it’s the screenplay and the narration which got Mani all the attention. Raja Rajathi rajan indha.. is a tapori number with stylish picturisation and sleek camera lightings by P C Sreeram. The more melodious Thoongadha vizhigal rendu.. and Vaa vaa anbae anbae.. borrowed very beautifully from Carnatic raagas, Amirthavarshini and Sivaranjini respectively. Again, the Hindi version (Vansh) in which Mani Ratnam merely shared the credit for the story, had a lovely number in Aa ke teri baahon mein.. by Anand Milind who apparently, used the same Thoongadha vizhigal rendu.., but with greater customization to the Hindi audiences. As in Kasak, it did not reach the people, thanks to the movie’s commercial failure. The raaga Mohanam-based song Ninnukori varnam.. and Roja poo naadi vandhadhu.. numbers had Ilayaraja in great form with his orchestration. The other number, Oru poongavanam.. was a rather slow number, but very apt for the sensuous mood of the song.

In TFMP,objectivity is measured in direct proportion to how much of IR's work u can trash.
post 82 - highly objective
post 92 - fairly objective
and for me , it is post 2002. Probably this is my first step towards objectivity :)-

yes indeed sesh, idhayathai thirudaadhe did not have SPB... but the original Geetanjali had SPB singing all the songs... and as far as songs go, Idhayathai thirudaadhe comes nowhere close to Geetanjali.

>>Even Idhayathai thirudhaadhe did not have SPB right<<
Oh yes, that's how Mano butchered the songs big time, god, he butchered Oh Priya Priya, followed by 'Oh Paapa lali', why does he think he can be SPB, Mano's voice is so horrible!, only few songs are hearable, the songs, where he sang in his own voice!
Geetanjali was the telugu(Original) version of I.thirudathe, Listen to SPB's Geetanjali, u will notice the quality of the voice instantly, u will never want to hear I.thirudathe, once you hear SPB's geetanjali!!

Raghu , Come on, Dont say Mano's voice is horrible etc. He is a good singer. Yes maybe we cant compare him with SPB. He has had some real good songs in "nee oru kaadhal ..." , "Adho megha oorvalam.." etc. Yeah may be I should listen to geethangali to hear how SPB has sung them. But Mano is also a good singer.

A similar Comparison - Hear 'Lalitha Priya Kamalam' by Yesudas from Rudraveena and 'Idhazhil Kathai Ezhuthum' by SPB from Unal Mudiyum Thambi. Which is better? I feel it is the yesudas one. Noway SPB version is inferior. Its equally good. But i feel there is more perfection in the 'Gamakas' by Yesudas. What u guys think?

`mudhal mariyAdhai', another great musical, missed SPB too...(Despite his limitations, MV did commendably well with the village numbers, `poongAtru thirumbumA' and `vetti vEru vAsam')

Who ever it is, IR has the capablity to use the singer to his fullest potential. Needless to say, SPB is a versatile singer. Even now, IR songs are evergreen and it sounds as fresh each time u listen. his music is natural.
