Recently heard this SPB/SJ movie song replayed in a TV serial. SPB and SJ alternatively give each other tunes and have the other person form the lines for that tune. The song starts as "Chippi irukkudhu muthum irukkudhu thirandhu paarka naeram illadi raajaathi"; I really enjoyed the part where SJ goes "thaanaa thaanaa thaanaa" and SPB comes up with "thevai paavai paarvai", and the mischievous competition in composing between the two chharacters.
Can anyone tell me the situation, movie, MD and the year of release (roughly) of this movie? Thank you.

Film: Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu
MD: MSV
Lyric: Kannadhasan
Actors: Kamal and SriDevi
Dir: KB
Year: 1980
It has been a long time I have seen this movie. SriDevi Challenges Kamal that she would give sandham and asks Kamal if he could give words. It is a wonderful scene where KB exploits the talents of Kannadhasan, MSV, Kamal,SriDevi, SPB and SJ.

In one of the interviews, KB mentioned that "chiipi irukkuthu.." song sequence (sandham koduththu vaarththai vaangudhal) was inspired by seeing the way MSV-Kannadaasan pair worked those days.

I can't believe that you didn't know about this
song. AYYO PAVAN NEENGA!
IN CYLON Radio, this was the MOST number of
times played song - and it used to be the number
one song for almost one year.
KBalachander pumped up both MSV and Kannadasan for
a isai virunthu before that song and got the best
out of both of them.
The song situtaion: Kamal as an unemployed and
theevira Barathiyar fan walks out of home conflicting with his father - a Karnatic musician
comes to Delhi and struggling to get a job - falls in love with Sridevi. They express their love
in that song in a very descent, matured way.
If you havn't seen that movie "varumain niram sivappu", run to the nearest Tamil Video store.
Another great song from that movie is Barathiyar's
"nallathOre veenai seithEn, athai nalamkeda.."
Also there is a Hindi song - lyriced by PBS.
Are you aware of other great movies which got
released the same DEEPAVALI day ( I remeber me and
akka standing in the Q in Central theater Madurai
to see the movie) like: NIZALGAL, MOODUPANI, one more from Magendran (uthiripookal or nandu).
sambantham illAtha innoru clarification, somewher
you mentioned that Nil Kavani Kathali song
"KankaLukkenna kAvalillaiyO" second line was
awful with "pengalukkenna AngalillaiyO" - I checked with paatu pusthagam - it is
AVALILAIYO not ANGALILAIYO
Vaali avLo mosam illai, afterall!

Kanchana - Surprises never cease, does it? For most of us, all you need to mention is "Sippi irukkuthu" and everything would come to mind!
I never rated this song highly, but this could be because I couldn't stand MSV (being a IR fan!). KB was my favourite director but he didn't want to use IR then, and I was at the crossroads. Anyway, till today, I don't see what the fuss is all about, whilst the rest of people are raving about this song. But I remember vividly one thunukku about this song!
This was the period when "isaikku paadal" was going strong as opposed to MSV's "paattukku isai. Kannadhasan was irritated when asked to write to this tune and admitted that he had kanna-pinnama written for it! That's why you have irrelevant lines such as "thangath thattu enakku mattum."

Please note that the above views of the song are my opinion. So, no brickbats, please. If you enjoy the song, please carry on :-)

Kanchana: You must have been busy with your GRE when this movie was released. It is a good song by MSV standards (MSV was way down the hill at that time, churning out so-so songs except some occasional hits like Ninaithalae Inikkum). I have to agree with NOV.
Bones: I remember the ISAI SELVAM on ceylon radio. This song became No. 1 the very next week it was introduced but so was Ilangayin isaikkuyil ennodu isai padudho (Pilot Premnath). But the song that stayed longest in that list was Ponmaalaip pozhudhu (Nizhalgal). Thanks for rekindling my ceylon radio memories.

To all of you who feel bad for me since I am this ignorant about this song--thank you for your condolences. Ravy comes closest to the truth----1980 was the year I left India for the U.S. to do my M.S./Ph.D., which was the start of my decade-plus self-exile from TF-dom due to education/career commitments (except for singing some of my favorite songs or playing them on the piano).
Everything you've said has sparked my interest in seeing the movie, so I'm going to track down a videotape or a DVD of this movie. Thank you all again!

NOV:
Are you sure K'dhasan made the comments that you
have mentioned. I don't think K'dhasan would
have had any trouble cooking-up great lyrics for any tune. I think what must've happened was the
following. Since his movies are looked-at by critics
with pointed eyes, KB would have thought that
if beautiful lyrics had been put down then
critics might ask how an ordinary fellow (Kamal's
character) is able to think of such lines, that too,
extempore. That's why he would have insisted
that K'dhasan write very ordinary lines (which,
probably irritated K'dhasan).

Satya Keerthi - You have a wonderfully vivid imagination - I must salute you for that. Unfortunately your assumption is not true. It's just that Kannadasan was a Kavignar in the true sense of the word and didn't think much of writing for a pre-determined tune. I think he was tired of doing this for IR, and being asked to do it for MSV was the limit for him!
Kanchana - Now that I am no longer a fanatic of IR, I can say that VNS had many good songs and these include Nallathoar veenai seithu, Thoogey raaja tere raani, Theerthe karaiyineeley, etc.

TO ALL :
KB enjoys songs like this : songs where the lovers express their love for the first time. KB has so many songs like this and he does a great job of it.
For ex :
1. Sippi Irukkudhu Muthum Irukkudhu
2. Junior Junior Iru Manam Konda Thirumana Vaazhvil
3. Adhisaya Raagam Aanandha Raagam - great song for a great situation. Sri Vidya at the beginning of the song enjoys the tune but at the end of the song realises that Kamal is singing about her and becomes enraged !
4. Love theme from Punnagai Mannan.
There are many more songs from KB like this. Please add.
KB realises the importance of love being declared - and he capitalises on the moment like no other director.

Oho, DF gurukkalellam intha Archive poongavil thaan nadamaduvingalakkum. Ennanga idhu, puthu paiyan enukku konchum munname sollikuddukakoodatha enga poganum varanumnu?
I will have to keep an eye on these Archive threads. The current topics are in a rut. How many new postings does it take to constitute a revival of an old thread such as this?
Anyway, coming to the point here, NOV, couldn't "Thanga thattu Enakku Mattum" mean that Kamal's character thinks of Sridevi's character as a heavenly feast and only he holds the vessel to taste the dish? (Sorry if this interpretation offends anybody's sensibility). Maybe I'm really reaching here, but those lyrics aren't totally irredeemable are they?
Kanchana, thank you for pointing me to the Archives. I did check out the "Paamaranin..." thread by Arularasan. It was fascinating.

KB is an ally and ardent fan of Kannadhasan. He used to admire the way KD and MSV work in situations. He wanted to include this in one his films and 'Varumayin Niram Sigapu' was the answer. The whole of the song 'chippi irukuthu..' is actually a reflection of the relationship between KD and MSV. KB utilised Kamal as KD and Sri Devi as MSV for the song picturisation to express his own admiration for the duo. Incidentally, have you ever noticed that in all KB films where Kannadhasan was the lyricist there will be one main theme song which narrates the film's plot eg. Kelviyin Nayagane...(Aboorva Raagangal)?KB had high regards for KD so much so he refused to attend the latter's funeral. His reasons - he cannot afford to see his bossom pal lying lifeless. It was too much for him.
