Thiruvillaiyadal and Shankarabaranam
Obviously shankarabaranam is superier than Sindhu Bhairavi and Aboorva Raagangal. But thiruvillaiyadal stands first in my opinon with variety and versatility. As stated by many friends before, Thiruvillaiyadal is the best album of KVM in thamizh followed by Thillana Mohanambal. Shankarabaran is the best album of KVM in telugu.

G.Ragavan: I agree with you on Thiruvilayaadal. Also, in the lighter
genre, I would rate "Shaarada" as one of the, if not the, best album of KVM. There are no doubt many competitors here also.

RR,
Thanks 4 the info.
G.Raghavan,
I can not c how ' Abborva Raagangal' could be compared to GEMS like Shankaraparanam, except the grear song by Dr.KJY & the last song by VJ, this album was not great, I would say 'Salanghai Oli' was far better than Aboorva Raagangal, would you agree?

Raghu: I agree in general it is not a good idea to compare two albums as they both are for entirely different movies and might serve quite different purposes. That said, Ap0orva Raagangal was a great album with three great songs (out of a total of four).

KVM and IR are the TFM MDs who have used our very own Mangalakaramaana instrument Naadhaswaram to the hilt.
KVM has expertly handled Naadaswaram in many ongs other than the popular ThillaanaMohanambal
Who can forget SJ's duet with Karukurichi Arunachalam's Nadaswaram in "Singaara velane deva " !!!
In the song
"podhigai malai ucchiyile purappadum thenral" from Thiruvilaiyaadal, the usage of Nadaswaram for the interludes comes as a pleasant surprise as the song is set to a light, romantic mood.
Another song with Naadhaswaram is the "Manam padaithen unnai ninaippadharkku" with PS's mellifluous singing.

Dear all,
Did KVM compose for 'Thiruvarutchelvar' , 'Kanthan Karunai', or was it Viswanathan Ramamurthy ???
thanks

Hi all, Why single out only KVM for use of Nadaswaram? MSV and MSV-TKR combine have used it with telling effect in many songs. MSV in 'Poo Mudippal indha poonguzhali' sung with gusto by TMS in Sridhar's movie and the same TMS voice interspersed with nadaswaram in pachai vilakku (oli mayamana ethirkalam) as well as PS song in Santhi (Oorengum mappillai oorvalam). I can cite other intances too. Where KVM has scored over MSV is in the usage of veenai. Here he's been great. Somehow MSV has not used veenai as much as KVM. To digress here, it's unfortunate that all our sabhas, who chase each other in honouring western isntruments ill-suited for carnatic music like guitar etc, are consistently ignoring 'raja vadhyam' nadaswaram. Is it because no brahmin is adept at playing this grand instrument? By the way I am a TaM BRAHM. This can form part of the discussion forum, the cold shoulder given to nadaswaram vidwans by the brahmin-dominated chennai sabhas

Raghu, In my opinion, Aboorva Raagangal is also a good album. It has very good songs and one fetched national award for vani jayaram. But what I was trying to mean is different. Aboorva Raagangal and Sindhu Bhairavai have the songs written for them. Shankarabaranam used many classical songs with additional effects and made them popular. That is the uniquness of that album. Sindhu bhairavi is also a wonderful album.
RR, sharada is also a wonderful album from KVM. There is no second opinion about it. Since the comparison was between, these two movies, I made that statement.
Interesting part is, KVM got national award for kandan karunai. That album also has a good collection of songs with different talent singers like KBS, SG, TMS, PSuseela, ALRaghavan, Anuradha Sriram's mother (did I miss anyone else?)

Well, my intention was to highlight the innovative or the creative usage of Naadaswaram when you least expect it. It is common for all MDs to use Naadaswaram for marraige or temple scenes. But I was just wondering at the reason behind using Naadaswaram for "Podhigai malai uchhiyile " song. Probably it was to portray opulence and grandiosity in the queen's bath as a royal , key event which eventually paves way for the Nakkeeran eipsode.

Another album by K V Mahadevan that must be mentioned in Swathikiranam. An album replete with semiclassical melodies released at a time when the market was being inundated with disco music. The 8-minute stellar rendition of the shiv-stuti "aanathi neeyara" must have instantly found a place of pride in Vani Jairam's repertoire. That's one song one can never tire of listening endlessly. And I have not heard any other song having such a wonderful and indeed surprising finale. Vani sings an aalaap and just when you feel the song has ended, the rhythm is restarted after a momentary silence, whereafter Vani Jairam's voice soars towards the high octaves again.
The other song in the movie that appealed to me greatly was the Chitra-SPB duet version of "pranathi pranathi pranathi". Very soothing song, reminiscent of Manasa Sancharare from Shankarabharanam.

Hi all,
The best use of nadaswaram in tfm was by sm subbiah nayudu in 'konjum salangai' in the song
sung by K janaki with the great karukuruchi
arunachalam, a famous disciple of the legendary
thiruvaduthurai rajarathnam pillai, providing
the nadaswaram support.
R govardanam also used it to telling effect
in poovom pottum song nadaswara osaiyile sung by
the incomparable duo of tms and ps.
Kvm used shenoy to great effect in the
unforgettable song 'kaaviyama nenjin oviyama' from
'paavai vilakku'. the lyrics of maruthakasi, with
each line ending with 'yama', was simply outstanding.

I recently happened to hear this song from EngaL Selvi sung by P Leela, Jamuna Rani and LR and chorus:
Enna peru vaikkalaam eppadi azhaikkalaam!
-- What took me by surprise was the thought that this situation (naming ceremony of the baby) could be used for a song! And a very apt and simple and interesting tunes by KVM! Give Mama the lyrics and he could compose some of the best tunes!
Another one of his simple gems is this not-so-popular song from Iruvar ULLam:
Kanne Kanne Urangaadhe
- Again, I like the tune for its sheer simplicity and ease with which he brings the underlying mood of the song (again remember the situation to enjoy it fully)!
There could be so many such gems from KVM which have not become popular.

KVM sir abour Dr.SPB sir
K.V. Mahadevan, Music Director
A sizeable credit for the National Award given to me by the Government of India for the "BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR" for the film "SANKARABHARANAM" goes to Balu….Of course the rendition of the songs by him contributed tremendously to the success of the movie. It was, in my opinion, equal to, if not better than, the best efforts from a specialist in classical songs. Today he has truly established himself as one of the few singers of quality in all the South Indian languages, including Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Though he is known to come late for the recording, he more than compensates for the delay by ensuring that all the songs are rendered to perfection in the first try itself. For all his popularity, he is very humble and very friendly with all members of the orchestra. He also provides a number of useful suggestions to improve the music for his songs…
In his humbleness, magnanimity, and love for music, he has no equal today. His golden voice is the one and only in the industry.
