Raja is for Folk and Indian music. ARR is for Jazz and Hollywood style.

Rahman --> Jazz ???!!####%$^@$^*^*#%*
PLEAaaaaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !
The essence of music is NOT in how it 'sounds' like
but on the structure of the composition. By just using
jazz instruments, you CANNOT produce jazz music.
Not to mention the number of jazz chords IR has used
that have not got the attention of whoever started
this topic. END IT !!!!!

It is irrelevant to compare Illaya raaja and AR Rahman.
Raaja 's music is eternal. He is comparable with Mozart or Thyagaraajar.Whereas ARR is budding musician with good time and luck. His one song will do for us to hear all his other songs.
It is irritating to hear the repeated tunes and we are fooled.

Pinchi saar,
knowing how u liked SPBs singing in thanga thamarai.. i'd like u to listen to "unnai vida matten" from "vanaja girija" with no distractions. it's easily one of SPBs best renditions in recent years, went unnoticed somehow. i think IR really suffers with some of the most stupid picturisations by mediocre directors, whereas ARRs songs are aided to a great extent by the fact that he composes only for all the "relatively" creative guys like shankar, maniratnam, BR etc.

Its strange that you choose not to think beyond "ARRs songs are aided to a great..blah blah".Why do you think Shankar,Mani et al are signing ARR.And please dont tell me thats because ARR is popular. If that were true Mani should've dropped him after Thiruda Thiruda or Iruvar,Shankar never
would have signed him on after Pudhiya Mugham.
The truth whether you like it or not is that one must move with the times and Shankar and others realise that. However "great" Raja was the fact is
he is a pop musician(with all its connotations of transience and frivolity) and pop will inevitably
seek new forms and new voices-its energy cannot be
be stifled by regressive,nostalgia-mired orthodoxies.

Raja is a musical genius... but lost his soul and stopped being evocative over a period oftime... and yes, he KNOWS the folk stuff. and rehman??? lots of soul and limited talent. MSV had both... and lasted the longest

ARR tunes are being recycled. At the time I write this post, I am listening to Sotta Sotta Nanayuthu from Taj Mahal. This song is very similar to Vanna Poongavai from Jodi. Rahman is very limited in what he brings to the table. Also, has anyone listened to "Chandralekha" from Thiruda Thiruda and then listened to "Tara Rum Rum Pum" from Jodi? When Rahman starts the song with the violin playing, it is almost like an identical carbon copy. I have also begun to notice that Rahman composes music in a certain style for certain directors. In the movie Kizhakku Cheemayilae, Rahman does not use a lot of bass and uses a lot of sticks to make chuk chuk chuk sound. In Taj Mahal, with the exception of Eechi Elumichee, Rahman fails to use bass. He sticks to the same instruments. Like Ilayaraja music in the 1980s, Rahman music is getting very very repetitive. The belief that Mudhalvan songs are fantastic is the most absurd statement I have ever heard. IR's Time is a much better album than Mudhalvan. Why does Rahman insert stupid stuff in his songs? Vane Vannee Vannnee Vane Vane Vannee is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. It sounds soooooooo cheesy. He is trying to sound very modernized and be creative but I can even make up garbage like that. I think that another MD needs to revolutionize the industry and I think it will take another 5 years. Rahman's style and music is starting to annoy me.

It is a really sad thing that just because Rahman uses jazz instruments, he is immeidately claimeed to be a jazz exponent. Raaja has used jazzy music and seamlessly tailored(!) it to suit Thamizh film music. A striking example is "Rum Bum Bum" from MMKR. Peppy lyrics and good singing performances by SPB and Chitra make this song highly hummable.

illayaraja is a creator in the truest sense , his speed , orchestration and composition can never be matched in the years to come . mark my words , his symphony though delayed , when released it would prove to be the benchmark for western classical music , similar to a Mozart,Bach ,Beethoven.
While, AR is an improviser ,more of a sound engineer who can create new sounds with old tunes.
You have to give due credit to him for a tamilian to become the most sought after music director in the Indian film industry is something highly commendable.
We must be proud that our tamil industry is being able to produce such great talents who can never be compared to any other music technician in India.

Srikanth,
I have heard Venilla venilla. Yes it is a jazz song. But My argument.. is that the topic should not read raja for folk/indian.. and rahman is for jazz.. just because of a few songs. I never said in my posting that arr has'nt done any jazz songs... but a few.. and if you notice.. very traditional.... I don't want to start another fight.. but if you understand what I say.. its like its been picked off from some standard jazz rythm..(I'm not sure).. but when you here IR's jazzy (I use the word 'jazzy'.. because.. it sounds influenced by jazz songs) songs.. they have so much of indian blend... the perfect blend of Indian tunes.. with jazzy chorsd. Maybe the topic should read.. ARR for POP. Which is more to do with innovative sound chops, great listening pleasure etc.
P.S. Loy Mendosa played keys for Venilla Venilla. And these guys have jazz in their finger tips. When IR uses a musician.. it does'nt matter who.. he composes.. anyone who can read music.. can play and the stuff will sound the same. On the other hand.. this is directly from the horses mouth.. I know someone who played guitar for ARR in I think love birds (I forget the name prabhu deva and Nagma).. where he was asked to play like 10 minutes alone ina room. Finally there is a patch of what he played in a few seconds in the song.

Just forgot why I started posting in thie thread. What is the topic suggest. Is it asking for confirmation. Is it making a statemant of its own ? What ? I think we shoul stop classifying.. people and their talents.. into bins. I'm sure ARR, IR or any MD would find such a topic for discussion absurd. There is no need for discussion here.
