Neels, I think SL's first song was "Maalaiyil Yaaro Manathodu Pesa...", before that she used to sing IR's group like AM. But I think that "povomaa Oorkolam" was the biggest hit for SL. She was introduced because IR had problems with KSC.

Uthamaputhri is a terrible song. But Swarnalatha's first song may have been Chinnanchiru kiliye a nice song from Neethikku thandanai as mentioned by hari and MS.

She has a kalangam illadha voice. Really adorable. Unfortunately she gets to sing those LRE type songs that don't suit her voice.

Ranking purely on the basis of voice , Swarnalatha stands head and shoulders above the rest of TFM singers in my list. She has a much sweeter voice as compared to chitra or SJ in my opinion. I get the feeling that her voice is very 'thin' and soft as if her whole vocal chord is hanging on one small delicate strand. She gives that divine feeling with her voice especially in songs like 'ennulle ennulle' in Valli. I cannot imagine anyone else singing that song.

Uunfortunately IR gave some of his latest melodious numbers like 'Alai meedhu' from kaadhal kavithai to bhava instead of Swarna. He has been using swarna less of late, I wonder why.

I feel that she is the most under-utilised singer right now. Instead of using singers like sandhna sargam or an aged lata mangeshkar who kill tamil mercilessly why cant ARR or IR use swarna better? its a mystery.

'nee paartha paarvai' from hey ram is another great miss, I feel for this singer.

Vijay, you are so right. "Nee engey" from Chinnathambi is another example. She can hit such a high note and sound so delicate at the same time. I once thought that Swarnalatha was going to rule TFM like PS in the 60s. Oh well, I hope that atleast she will not disappear like VJ.

One more great song of SL is 'unnai edhirpaarthaen' ("Vanaja Girija"). Great melody and soulful singing by SL. Unfortunately, it was spoiled by poor picturisation by KR.

its a shame on tfm that people forgot the song in karuthamma which bagged national award for swarnalatha"porale ponnuthai".we cannot imagine any other female playback singer in this song.there is also another song in the malayalam movie 'ezharakkotam"means a gang of seven and a half, she has sung a song in rag mohanam and it is tuned in chinese style, man it is one gem of a song in her career.Guys if possible please listen to that song.

But it is also neccesary to say that she should start singing where people can understand what she is singing, she concentrates only on the melody and not her expression of words.Will somebody say this to swarna.

There was actually another song called "PoravaLE poonuthayi naanum varren nillu thayi" from a film titled "Railukku neramaachu" (music SAR) that was sung by Swarnalatha. The mvie came out in 1988.

This, of course, is nothing to do with the Karuthamma song you guys are discussing above, but just an info...

There are two versions of 'poraaLae ponnuthaayae' ("Karuthamma"). pathos was by Swarnalatha and she got the national awad for that. The other version was by Sujatha and Unni Menon.

I think Swarnalatha does sing with feeling and emotion. But in some of her recent songs I find it a little hard to understand the words while the older songs are actually clear.
