I agree with most of what you guys say. All lines in a song need not be excellent poetry, but can contain a few brilliant lines.
A kavidhai needn't have excellent analogy or good wordplay, it can be simple, yet effective. A good example is "thennankeeRRu oonjalilE", by Jayakanthan.

OISG,
TR has made it clear in one of his interviews- print medium enru ninaikkiren that he is not a kavingar but a paadal aasiriyar. So as a film maker he feels that he does a good job for writing a song to suit a particular situation better than an outside kavi.
so TR is a lyricist rather than a poet. If you view him in this light then probably you can get over your irritation.
I think I read that a similar thing happened to Agathiyan, he had written one song for "kathal kottai" and went to Vaali for the rest of the songs. vaali( felt slighted/piqued) asked him if he could write one song he could as well write the rest. Agathiyan took up the challenge and wrote the other lyrics.
Of course good lyrics will have nuances of poetry.
Conversely poets too come out with lyrics. barathiyar's kuyil paatu may be an example. A 10th standard guy sitting for sixth exams is expected to do better:-)

Vengayam
Kavignar - Padal Aasiriyar
Word play but not a clever one,I am afraid!
I was intially impressed by "Neeyingu sugame Naan Angu sugama" but it was shortlived as I saw "Kadhalan" in cable at Pune and the scene where Nagma is kept under house arrest you see THE SAME WORDS written on the wall behind Nagma.
Udhaya
You robbed me of some of Vali s lines which i was to post...Meyyaga nee ennai virumbatha pothum is very good considering Jurassic park sugamana jodi!
But considering the trend even "Kaneeril thane engal Farewell party" should sound ok.
KKD s lines :
Nanathale Kaalgal pinna pinna - the great ness of this line is that It was written for a dubbed tune from Jewel thief song.
Matharar thangal magalendru paarthirukka - (Nejirukkum varai).this is certainly path breaking when you have "Kuzhalinidhu Yaazhinduhu ..THAM (OWN ! That s the key!)makkal mazhalai" "Evan thnthai ennotran kol enum sol"
The beauty of the bride is such that all women wanted her to their daughter...
In the same song "Thai Vazhiye vantha Nanathai kaati"
After Udhaya s post I am seriously doing some soul searching ......IN T R s songs!
some "Trendy Marabu kavithai"
HIV vanthidinum piriyen endraan Ayin
H1B vanthida Paranthanan Mangai Maranthanan-AvaLo
HMT watchinai idayinil Korthanal
Kadhalan pirithalum Kanniyar Idai Melinthu
KaivaLai Izhathalum Kalathin Vazhi Vantha Iyalbe.
Yaarum Adikkatheenga!

OISG, look up the meaning of lyrics & poetry in a dictionary and then you will know what I am trying to say.It is definitely not a wordplay by me or by TR.
coming to Poetry
what should it contain?
it should not be verbose
it should be elegant
It should be subtle
it should have layers of meaning.
apparam makkalukku puriyanum- ithu mukkiam.
Reg, nalam nalam ariya aaval
Shankar & Agathiyan borrowed it from the same source a small haiku type kavithai? published in AV.

udhaya: in the lines "pUvE vasantham vandhadhai nI vaNdukku eppadi uraippAy" (or something like that), the poetry breaks down when the words "un vaNNaththilA vAsaththilA" are added :-(. at least to me.
the answer to the question "edhu kavidhai" is a difficult one (probably impossible to find a unique answer), but every answer should have some common qualities. one of them is knowing that the audience is intelligent enough to fill in the unsaid.

this may be digressing. but, I was reading your posts and tangentially, I thought of a more fundamental question : "Edhukku Kavidhai?".
Don't get me wrong here. I don't want to play the devil's advocate. I am all for art in whatever form it can creep into mainstream cinema. It is just that I find very little motivation for the makers of popular cinema to patronise art when they can successfully get away with cheaper, gimicky, more fashionable means of portrayal. (I am assuming that art doesn't sell well, which IMO is very valid). I know that the producers et al are already bypassing art, but I am very surprised at the quality of music & lyrics we have been getting compared to the story & other aspects of popular cinema. I couldn't think of any reason why we deserve & (rightfully) demand good poets while turning a blind eye to the other aspects.
I would love to hear your arguments regarding why we need/don't need kavidhai.

sriram,
I watch maybe 3 or 4 Thamizh movies a year. But I listen to hundreds of songs. The reason? Thamizh Music is a higher medium than the Thamizh movies that contain them. Poetry, even song lyrics are of a higher intellectual plane than movies which are essentially commercial products. (Now, please don't go dig up all the awful lyrics to prove me otherwise, I'm perfectly aware of the nasty lyrics out there also.) To make a movie it takes a willing producer and any number of people who pitch in with their ideas aimed at the commerciality of the end product. Lyrics are predominantly from the mind of one poet (or so we hope) and stand a chance to spring from higher instincts than do movies. Less chance for degradation here. Even the average poet is more educated or intellectually inclined than the average movie maker.
Your argument that we only deserve the lyrics equal to the movies we get is unreasonable. I buy CDs all the time and enjoy them irrespective of the movies the songs appear in. The two are thankfully distinct elements for me.
