Last night I was listening to 'Poomalaiye thol serava' from Pagal nilavu..... a masterpiece by IR... a masterful use of violin throughout the song... though IR predominantly uses Violin, i thought we can discuss the master pieces ..... like the starting piece of Pottu vecha malliga mottu or the song from vaazkai...

Almost 90% of IR's songs have heavy violin as it is one of his favourite instruments. It's not easy to list them all. Here are some:
1. Rakkamma kaiya thattu - thalabati
2. kaala kaalamaaga - punnagai mannan
3. aanandha raagam - panneer pushpangal (starting piece)

i agree its not easy to list all of them.... i would have missed a few, and u could have missed a few and which could share those... As you have mentioned, Rakkama starting piece is also a great one...ARR also has good Violin pieces..ennavale, porale ponnu thaayi etc...

*The opening string section in "Kalyaana Maalai"
(Puthu Puthu arthangal).
*Sundari Kannal oru (Thalapathi), the strings section accompany the song,
*O priya priya (Ithayathai Thirudathe),I just lurved the musical intreludes in this song.
*Minnale nee vantha (May Madam)
*Netru illatha Maatram (Puthiya mugam)
I love the way (i don't know how to put it in musical terms (maybe someone can help me), when the violins play over the singer whilst they are singing. It's not just an accompaniment as such, but more like they play another melody line over the singer, Ilaiyaraja does this quite often.
other favourites:
Ninnikori varnam (agni Natchatiram)
Innum ennai enna ( Singaravelan)
also the sad version of Puthu sethi Katcheri from the same movie has a magnificant arrangement, the song starts of with a violin solo breaking into an ochestral arrangement. Just kai !

Listen to beginning of poongathavE thAzh thiravAi...
What we listen to in the foreground in just the lead violin playing in the Carnatic style...Give it a closer listening, u hear a WC violin countering this lead violin, and towards the end they merge.....This combo is amazing.

Folks:
Mella Mella Ennai thottu.... in Vazhkai is probably the first IR song that was entirely based on just a single violin plus just one accompanying flute..with perhaps a set of background drum. Probably just four guys were needed to play the instruments and record this song...this song amazes me for its deep violinic melody. Just watch how just a single violin is shifted in scales to give a robust rhythm...
The next outstanding may be "En Vanilae Ore Vennila in Jhonny...this song is usually discussed as a best Piano piece in this forum...but actually in the first interlude one violin starts and then another one joins in fugue followed by a shower of tender Piano..
Another song that is less noticed here is "Varuvai Anbe..which has extensive use of violin with deep fiber drum beats

* There is a lovely violin interlude in "Meetadha oru veenai ....
* Starting of "raasathi onna kaanadha ...."
* "thalaiyai kuniyum thaamaraye"
* interlude in "kannamoochi yenada" in KKKK

notable mentions:

-thirakkaatha kaattukkullae
-vizhiyilae malarndhadhu
-aththaan ennaththaan
-oru naal yaaroa
-nilavum malarum vaaduthu
far too many old songs to mention (pretty much 80% of viswanathan-ramamurthy songs! ramamurthy was a violin genius.)

In "Kaadhal kavidhaigal padithidum neram" - Gopura vaasaliley...
"Kaiveesidum thendral..kanmoodidum minnal
idhu kaviyo kalayo amudho silayazhago"... just note the miniscule violin-flute-violin combo ... fraction of a second play but excellent to say the least. a fraction of a second gap and its filled with 2 instruments playing thrice. marvellous.

Preludes of Pothi vacha malligai mottu and Poomalayey thol serava..
I recently discovered the violin mela by IR in rasathi rasathi song from Poovarasan as Normal Man rightly mentioned..great song..
Grand usage of violins in Rakkamma,Yaar veetu Roja etc.
mmm..Violinists GOLDEN PERIOD, IR period endru sollalama?
Real Instrument players vaipugal kuraindhu varuvadhu kurithu kavalayaga ullathu..
It wud be nice if we compile songs which had very rare instruments in it like dilruba, sarangi, chitraveenai etc etc..

I agree with u.. kaadhal kavidhaigal padithidum the initial violin piece as well as the voilin-flute combo is great...... Also if you note the other song 'naadham ezhundhadi' the first interlude is also too good.... Another recent song was 'Azhage Sugama' in Parthale paravasam...
I guess these individual creative pieces separate the best from the mediocre MDs.

Wonder why IR, (leave alone all MDs), doesnt use violins in a grand scale as b4. AFAIK, the last good violin song was "Oru naal andha oru naal" - Devadai.

a recent song with good violin prelude is "Minnalai pidithu" (shahjahan). i liked that song just for the violin prelude.
ARR - "Tanha tanha" (Rangeela)... or "Taniye taniye ennaalum" (Rangeela in tamil)... 2nd interlude (b4 2nd charanam)... a damn good one.

In the song "Kanne Kalaimaane" from Moondraam Pirai, there is a violin that plays over KJY's singing throughout. (Very faintly though !) If only that could be isolated, it would make a beautiful instrumental piece.

Yes, I noted the same thing..and I had posted it in one of the threads about two years ago..
You need a well recorded song with a good sound system. Although I have heard this song several times, I noticed the violin backdrop just a couple of years ago when listening from a CD...It is amazing..Whoever played that violin I don't know. If that track isolated will be an excellent violin sonata..by IR !

Some excerpts from Ilayaraja,
1. 3-part music in 1st interlude of Yedhedo ennam. And good use of stereo also in recording: The main melody can be heard in both the ears, the 2nd violin in one ear, and the 3rd violin in the other ear.
2. 3-part music in the interludes of Sangeetha Megam, but this time, the third part is taken by a double bass (or a cello?), and again good use of stereo.

The 3part music in the 2nd interlude (after the trumpet music ends) with the two violins and the double bass goes for 8 bars. Notice the rhythm provided by the stringed instruments here. For the first six bars, the 2nd violin would be mostly playing 1/16th notes, and the double bass plays half notes . And then comes the 7th bar, where the 2nd violin and the double bass gradually exchange rhythm. For the first half of the 7th bar, the 2nd violin plays 1/4th notes, and from there on plays half notes, while the double bass plays 1/4th notes from the 7th bar.

Another song with heavy violin orchestration by Illayaraja is "Thaen mozhi" in "solla thudikkuthu manasu" (abt 15 years old).
One song with excellent piano and violin solo pieces is "Unnidam mayangugiren" in "Thaen sindhudhe vaanam" by lesser known composer V. Kumar.

paneer pushpangal is the magnum opus of IR. the best point with him is, he has many such magnum opus ! Now all written about most of his songs here - i bring to all of your notice the BEST EVER TUNE - from VEEDU - the theme music - it surely has inspired the creator himself.. and that makes it the invincible winner on - violin and songs.
