It is great to know that Yesudas has come up with this album, "Ahimsa'. I went to the site to check out the songs. There's a whole lot of information given on the album, the singer, the technicians and the likes (catering of course to the Western Audience... note their intro to Veena: "South Indian Sitar!!!")
However, they have given just 10 second clippings from the tracks... which don't even qualify for samples. Anyways, I am eager to get hold of the album.
Since I haven't listened to the numbers, I can't comment on the inclusion of Junoon in the title track! I may be biased in my opinion, but sharing the honours with junoon, IMO, is a bit too much. I guess it's the PEACE factor, Hindi-Paki Bhai-Bhai that's responsible for this strange combo.
Earlier I was shocked to see STING performing on stage with Shyamak Davar, an aerobics expert-turned Choreographer lending him vocal support!!!! Padu Kolai paNNittanga!!
Ok, coming back to Yesudas, what's disheartening is the fact that THIS GEM OF A SINGER has not been given his due! How many (North)Indians know his contribution to Indian Music? He has the distinction of having sung in almost ALL INDIAN LANGUAGES (Except Assamese and Kashmiri)!
All they know is the fact that he has sung a few 'semi-classical' songs for Ravindra Jain and Jaidev in the late seventies and early eighties... How sad?
All that we guys are doing about these great artists (with Ilayaraja topping the list) is to whine about the bias! The Great North-South divide comes through.
Is marketing the right answer? Or is it accessibility? I would like the whole country celebrate these artists' triumphs. And I am not going to be content with the fact that the global Malayalee and Tamil communities are celebrating and they are not interested if the rest of the 'ignorant junta' gives a damn to the artists or not!
Any answers/solutions?
Neels

Neels,
I agree with you completely on the north-south divide bit. I think the defensive nature of the south(why call veena south indian sitar) makes the situation worse. We call Hindustani music Indian classical and Carnatic "South Indian classical" ...something needs to be changed here. I think KJY
has some of the best musicians from around the world on this album and IR has probably introduced western music in TFM in a deeper way than RD Burman and the likes can even dream of in a billion years.
Wishing that this Millennium will see aggressive marketing from the South.
