there is considerable research on the impact of classical music on tfm. as a corollary, i would like to expand on the usage of swaras in tfm and how our tfm fans liked them

Hi Badri,
Well maybe its wrong to start on a negative note, but when you say usage of swaras, the first thing that came to my mind is the "nivEdhaa" song by maragadhamaNi. All wrong swaras!!!
Of course, a lot of songs have swaras in them from "nIyE unakku enRum nigaraanavan" from the film "balE paaNdya" to "maamaa nI maama puthtam pudhu paattu" in the film "uLLaththai aLLithaa" "kaNNaaLanE" from Bombay. Another lovely one which comes to mind is "singaara vElanE dhEvaa". A dEvaa hit with swaraas in it (correct usage of swaraas or not is debatable!) is "thathiththOm" from the film "azagan".
Im sure someone will come to this thread and post a big list of songs with swaraas, so I stop here for now!!

well, what about that unforgettable "vandal mahalaxmiye" in uyarndha ullam by balu? that racy swara pattern with a feigned breathlessness, "aaha aaha interludes between the swaras". an entirely different dimension to kalyani, isn't it?
nithyasree has certainly made waves with her first number "kannodu kanbadellam" which has a fair sprinkling of swaras with some interesting patterns.
more on this later

oh yes! That was a good song! And some good graphics with it too! And not only swaraas, there were some jadhiis in it to, like nithyasree normally does in her concerts. (cant even make that statement, its more than a year since I attended a concert of hers!)
Maybe out of context 'cos its not TFM but I like one particular song very much for its swaraas. That is : tU chIz badi hai mast mast from the film mohraa!

Bull - Thathithom from Alzagan, in Dharmavathi Ragam is by MARAGATHAMANI, not Deva, hence the swaras are excellently done....

1. "Raagavanae Ramanaa" from Ilamai Kaalangal. The song starts with swara rendering with counterpoint swara rendering.
2. "Vaidehi Raaman" from "Pagal Nilavu". Second interlude is built only on swara rendering. Masterpiece by Raja.

Another (relatively) recent song with jadhis was kOOtathilE kOvilpuRa (IdhayakOvil). A lot of 40's/50's films (mostly MD'd by G. Ramanathan, R.Sudharshanam etc.) had at least one song that devoted a lot of time to swarams. e.g. kurangilirunthu pirandhavan manidhan (thOOkku thOOkki). Another interesting song, sung very well by TMS, was in the film aruNagirinAthar (MD??), where the words of the song are sung in a staccato way that resembles swarams (Does anyone remember the words? Starts like "athai thiru...")

Dear Mr.Bull,
As you have mentioned, the song "cheez badi hai mast mast" is in a way a GEM - originally composed by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this song is based very creatively based on RAAG BHEEM PALASI in Hindustani classical music - during the Seventies, there was a beautiful Kishore Kumar song for Shashi Kapoor, in the movie "Sharmilee" -
"Khil the hain gul yahaan" based on this same raga.
But to have used this raaga in semi- qawwali style proves that the late NFAK was indeed a genius in his own way.

best usage of swaras is
paadariyen padipariyen from sindhubhairavi. how can u all forget this song? suhasini struggled trying to lip-synch the song in the film. such amazing speed by chithra in her swara delivery.

Hi,
"Nee Pournami" - in simhendra madhayamam by KJY in
IR's music is a very good example of swaras.

TFM anbars!
here's a recent one with plenty of swaras in it. 'kannodu kanbadellam' from `jeans.'
i'm told nithyasree was given a free hand at the swarams.

Dear Sutti Ponnu,
The news is that ARR never interfered in the usage of swaras and jathis by Nithyasree. An interview goes on to say that as she sang the first few lines,Vairamuthu wrote the stanzas of the song and finished it on time!!Even the song in ARR's Vande Mataram,"Gurus Of Peace" has swaras sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the Sufi style. In dilse there are very small bits and pieces of swaras in the song "Dilse Re".

Geeta : oh! yes! azagan is MaragadhamaNi. When you say that the swaraas are "excellently done" do you mean that they are correct or do you mean it sarcastically because for the "nivEdhaa" song (adhu enna padamnnu nyaabagamE varalai!) there are swaraas in it but they are all obviously wrong swaraas!
BTW, the last paragraph of the song "thaththiththOm" is direct lift from Michel Jackson's Liberian Girl!

I know very little about swaras. One of my friends told me that swaras are mostly used as fillers in TFM and are rarely done right. Is there any merit to his statement?

i agree with your friend udaya.. i can scarecely think of any song (atleast by IR and rehman) that has a natural flow of swaras.. infact being a HCIRF, it surprised and dissappointed me that IR didnt use them properly.
the only part of the padariyen song i didnt like was the swaras.

Bull!
'Nivethitha' song is from 'Nee paathi Naan paathi' second movie for vasanth. He talked about this song to be a mega hit like 'Mannil Indha Kaathal' from 'keladi kanmani'. However, the movie bombed in the box office, so does the song!!!

My favourites are "Singara velane deva" (SJ) and "Ellam inba mayam puvimel..." (MLV and ?). In the case of the latter, it appeared to be a natural extension of the base melody and had superb twists and turns and beautifully sung too.

The idea of swarams in tfm is good, but it gets on my nerves when they are mis-used!! one example is "Nivedha...". I totally agree with all those who crib about wrongly-used-swaras.
Swaras seem to suit only those songs that are classical (carnatic) in nature - paadariyen padipaariyen, kannodu kaanbadhellam, singara velane deva, tha-thi-thom (azhagan)....
And how did we miss "Nila Kaigiradhu neram theigiradhu, yaarum rasikavillaye... "( from Indira). I simply love the swarams in that song..

How about "Sangeetham paada kelvi nyanam adhu vendum" in some movie by bhagyaraj?? this is an example of mis-use of swaras again. can someone tell me the movie name?

Chandy! The movie is Ithu Namma Aalu . But the song meant to be a funny, where spb uses only Aaa, Aaa, etc.
What about Nadaraajam kudi Konda Kalai... from Salangaiyil oru sangeetham . The same also has Yaaro Yaaro Nee endha ooro .
