I feel Hariharan is a feather in Tamil Play back world. I have been a fan of Hariharan from the Mid eighties. I listen to his Ghazals and have his complete collection. I am a Tamilian but I understand Hindi and Urdu also. I always wanted his voice in Tamil Film Music. It came true when the film Roja was released. The song 'Tamizha Tamizha' was excellent. It was like a dream come true for me. Then almost every other movie had atleast one song from Hariharan. All the songs that he sung had a special touch. Some noteworthy songs are
1. Vennilave Vennilave
2. Thamizha Thamizha
3. Ennai Thaalatta Varuvaa (NEW)(Kaadalukku Mariyaadai)
4. Chandiranai Thottadu yaar (Ratchagan)
and many more....
I am really fascinated by the on the spot improvisations when he sings a song. I mean the modulations and the gamakas.

Deepak,
I agree..HH is a beautific singer...fantastic voice and modulation; he has a Hindustani bias of course and that is why his "Sur" is perfect. Like you I love his ghazals although I do not understand Urdu, right from mid-80s. I used to plug my ears with HH in the nights and would listen for an hour or more before I caught some sleep!
One thing about HH in TFM, I think his pronounciation is not ultra hot and I am a bit worried that he will be setting a dubious trend amongst the young and unwary...about the importance of keeping Tamil pronounciation as it was intended..!

AA: HH is the least of our worries when it comes to Tamizh pronounciation. We have people now who make him look desirable. :) (e.g. udit narayan)

Hi Nalini
Thanks for putting in a plug for the Hariharan fan club website. I do hope more of his fans will log in. We've got some background info, a message from Hari himself, song lists, some audio files, lyrics, interviews, articles, etc. We are planning to put up some exclusive photos in the next few weeks.
This is a message from another fan who's been listening to Hari's ghazals almost daily without understanding a word of Urdu or Hindi.

Hi
I don't know about any of Hariharans Hindi songs and ghazals.
But I am now finding it that he is getting quiet boring. He seems to be too predictable. He puts the same mood into all his romantic songs, the same sangathis as musically knowledged people would say. I find that a lot of his songs sound similar. And I don't know, but his voice is not doesn't even feel fresh to me. I mean, UnniK. makes a better impression to me. Do any of you think that maybe it is because he is just in too many of the songs nowadays. I don't think so, really. Something about his voice...I can't grab it...and his style of singing...no adventure...I find his improvisations to be stale.

aruvi,
Maybe bcos u r comparing HH with the Great SPB. Do compare him with people like Udit or kumAr sAnu, u'll find him good :-)

Mmm...now maybe that would be the better way for comparision:-))
But then more then the comparision, it is a question of dissatisfaction.

I hav no doubt HH is a good singer. However he is quiet dishonest when he sings Tamizh songs. He takes pains to sing Hindi SOngs(even Ghazals). But when it comes to Tamizh songs, I think he is in a Hurry(Similar POV was expressed before by someone). He should not only improve upon his diction(Though Tamizh is his mother tongue), but also try to provide more life to a song. (the one song which I truly believe he did an excellent job is 'Kannai Katti..' from Iruvar)
TFM has given HH a wonderful chance. Its upto him to make or break it

Hi all,
I am yet another full-time fan of HH.I love a lot of his songs...the amount of modulations that he does leaves me spellbound!
The song that he has sung in Taal "nahin saamne" is also very nice.
I went for his live concert here in Singapore last october, and believe me, all the songs that he sang were much diff from the way they sound on cassette. He improvises his songs...So very creative a guy!
Hoping to listen to better and better songs from him in the future.
His ghazals are also very well sung...Anyone care to tell me if there are any new ghazal albums he's released after Jasn ?
Thanx.
Anand

Hello everybody!!!
I think that r lots of misconceptions about the pronunciation and bland flavor of singing fevour in Hariharan's voice..I feel that a person of that calibre has put in so much of character and beauty in his rendition of his songs that his emmaculate sense of flowering the songs to befit the mood is just plain astounding.although H has spent much of his time in completely unlearning the karnatic style that his father was preaching to him and totally adapting to the gamaks of hindustani music it has produced remarkable results. The flowering that he produces in his songs is remarkable especially at that stanza when it is most needed..Hence the power behind his mellifluous voice and versatility in style.I have checked out H's Hazir, a Ghazal vocal album done with the legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain. It is just an immaculate presentation of a man as capable as that and can be seen in songs like "Piya Piya" and "Koi saya Jil Milaya"..i do not understand the Urdu language or Hindi, but the man has the capability to captivate anyone in cultivating an interest in his music..anyone with a musical ear or inclination..no doubt Hariharan is the inspiration behind most latest Tamil songs.Recently there was a show in Singapore and I managed to listen to the colonial cousins perform..Hariharan's "Indian Rain" and "Krishna" were excellent and he also sang in a different scale..very typical of Hari adding Gamaks and sustaining ragas of a very different nature as compared to the original recordings..Perfect work of art I would say!!!

Hi! I`m a diehard fan of Hariharan (alias Ravi). I started listening to his film songs from Roja. The control he has on his voice is unbelievable. My favourite ghazal and indipop albums are Hazir(Mareez-e-ishq), Gulfam (Mujhe phir wohi yaad, Daro deewar pe), Horizon (Ban Nahin Paya, Sharab la sharab de), Sukoon ( Haath mein leke mera haath) , Halka Nasha (Duniyaan bhar ki), Jashn (Aap hamare saath nahin), Visaal (Asar Usko), Kaash (all songs are wonderful, especially ab ke baras, jhoom le, Kaash), qaraar, dil ki baat, paigham to name a few. The beauty of his voice is in his ability to flicker it with dexterity at very high pitches without having to struggle or shout. He is BLESSED. Period.......
