When Will our TFM guys get world recognition?

I wonder when we have so many wonderful composers and out-of-the-world singers, what prevents one of our guys from hitting the charts in say UK or US? I wish the day comes when someone from our folks win a Grammy.... I am left to wonder, when so many b******t boy bands and rappers, with no singing (forget composing)abilites at all getting the fame and fortunes, they dont deserve, when tfm guys (actually the whole indian music industry) deserve it than anybody else... What prevents singers like balasubramaniam or yesudas from releasing a pure world album..? their diction perhaps? Though i want them to do more for tfm, as a sincere fan, I do want them to be a cult like madonna or mj, the world over. This is something they deserve.. no?
Only hariharan has done colonial cousins stuff but i am not sure how much their albums are popular outside the nri s.

  Grammy is for them. Why should we be part of it ? We should institute our own awards and give it to successful. We should be systematic in classifying the music or art and try to be hones t and fair while giving the awards. This will encourage the talented among our people. When our country becomes rich and powerful, everybody would then like to sample our music/culture/clothing etc. All of us looking towards the West for each and everything have a inferiority complex.

  You are right. We should institute our own music awards and publicize and popularize it. And it should strictly be for Indian musicians and Indian languages with just one category and only one award for foreign musicians like the Oscars (revenge). If we do it right we will have the rest of the world looking up at us.
  
  But what disappoints me is the dominance of Western music and culture in TFM lately. Harris, YSR, KR and now Ramana. They are all talented musicians. But look at their style and the lyrics in their compositions. Come on baibee, love me baibee, this baibee and that baibee. It doesn't get any worse. Where do they get these high school dropout songwriters from? The reason TFM once had quality music was because we had musicians composing the music, poets writing the lyrics and trained singers singing the songs. But these days it sounds like western pop where the same highschool dropout plays the music, writes the song and sings it too.

  Does it really matter whether Westerners know about our music or not? We as Indians should be proud that we are the only country with so much musical variety. For instance Tamil and Assamese folk are so much different! Hindustani and Carnatic music are so different.

  Can't beleive I forgot ARR. Probably because he has been around too long and I have learned to filter out the bad songs before I listen to his albums.

  Setting up our own awards and doing it shouldnt be that difficult I suppose... Forget Grammy, think of it this way, how many of us listen to Madonna and backstreetboyz(!)? Sure, they are foreign culture, right? I just wish the vice-versa of the situation also became reality.
  Let it be ARR, Deva or SAR, as long as they produce something acceptable by all peoples...
  if an mj.. or even ricky martin, enrique and jennifer lopez(!) can do it, why cant ilayaraja, karthik, rahman.. whoever-u-like from tfm do it?
  I feel, getting nationwide recognition within India is much much more difficult than being recognized in Western World.
  Also I have seen people listen to the songs regardless of whether they know English or not.

  I dont listen to Madonna or BackStreetBoyz at all. Sorry there is much better music in the US than these commercially promoted ones. And Travis, you uttered IR's name in the wrong context :(..completely..oh man O man..

  neither do I listen to madonna and boybands! In fact I am not into this kinda pop music... just mentioned their names coz they are more popular and commercially viable the world over.
  well, i included ilayaraja to avoid myself being dragged into arguments... (i, sincerely dont want him to be one of those backstreet boys for Chrissakes!) ;-)

  Jokes apart, I mentioned the names to emphasize on the popularity and the sort of cult-status these bands / artistes enjoy, than on their quality.. If some feel low on the examples cited, I cant but agree.. Why not include the likes of Paul Mauriat, Ennio Morricone and Neil Diamond? The idea is the same. These people were/are also extremely famous and their music crossed all borders. What prevents our men from doing the same is the essence of my query.

  Popular in this context means purely western Teen/20s audience. I dont think all those band mentioned are not popular with indian junta.
  Now the question of "Why are they popular despite their poor quality" - well, the reason I believe is that it is the youth that decide the "poularity" of the songs. The lyrics are light, tune catchy and very appealing. We should not expect great things from them because they are not meant to be that way.
  On the other hand, as Travis mentioned - our music is not very popluar in the west. I think it is because the westerners have little exposure to Indian music. Only greats like L. Subramanian, Zakhir Hussain and a few others were able to show to them the beauty of indian music through their expert playing. We all know that music is very subjective to each and every one and it takes some time for people to get used to music from a different land. It is our responsibility to show them what our music is like. Ilayaraja has already done so much, and we can expect in the future many others might pave the way to our music.
  What prevents us from doing the same? - some encouragement and lot of money!
